BE A HERO FOR HEDGEHOGS

Veteran reporter, friend to Queen and Freddie, David Wigg, recently spoke to Brian May about the plight of British hedgehogs, see here:

Brian May and Percy the hedgehog

DAILY MAIL - WEEKEND MAGAZINE
8 April 2017 by David Wigg

To his fans Brian May is not only one of the musical legends in Queen, but also an astronomer and passionate opponent of badger culling.

More recently, though he's added hedgehog hero to his CV, after discovering that in the past 40 years numbers of these adorable creatures in Britain have declined from around 35 million. This is chiefly due to loss of habitat as people pave over their gardens, as well as an increase in road accidents - an estimated 200,000 hedgehogs die on our roads each year - as the volume of cars has risen.

'Hedgehogs are in deep trouble,' he says, 'mainly due to ignorance of their needs. But most people in Britain love these animals and are prepared to share their environment with them, so focusing attention on them is relatively easy.'

In a video he's made stressing their plight, Brian is filmed at his Surrey estate holding a prickly little chap named Percy, who was attacked outside a local leisure centre when he was put in a bag, swung around and kicked like a football. Police were called and Percy was taken to Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue, which has been operating with Brian's anti-cruelty charity the Save Me Trust from premises on his Windlesham estate for seven years.

In the video Brian asks, 'Can you see him? He's in "I don't want to be disturbed" mode at the moment, but you can see he's healthy and happy now. The thugs were prosecuted, but you can't undo the damage. All we can do is try to make people understand that these are real creatures with feelings. They have as much right to live in this land as we have.'

Harper Asprey is run by a team of volunteers led by Anne Brummer, who started rescuing hedgehogs more than 30 years ago and says there's so much we can do to help. 'They love snails and slugs, so they're good at getting rid of pests. Why use poisons when hedgehogs can do it? If you want to put foot out for them, they like meat and you can give them cat biscuits, but milk upsets their stomachs. If you have a pond, make sure the sides aren't too steep so they can get a drink and still climb out if they fall in.'

'Hedgehogs love to sleep in long grass during the day, so check before you mow,' says Anne. 'Garden netting can be a problem too as they can get tangled up in it. Compost heaps are ideal place for them to rear their young, so take care when turning the heap, and check bonfires before lighting, as hedgehogs love to sleep inside.'

'After they're born it's several weeks before they can fend for themselves, so they're vulnerable to predators,' adds Anne. 'So create an area in your garden that's a bit wild where they can build their nests safely.'

Brian is adamant we need to act now for future generations. 'Let's take care of hedgehogs while we still have them,' he says. 'When I'm gone I'll be remembered for Queen, but I'd rather be remembered for attempting to change the way we treat our fellow creatures.'

WORLD IS GOING TO POT, INCLUDING MONEY-OBSESSED BRITAIN, SAYS QUEEN'S BRIAN MAY
Direct link

Brian May

NEW STAR
6 April 2017

Queen guitarist Brian May said he felt 'upset' about the current political climate

Queen guitarist Brian May has labelled Britain a country obsessed by money.

The rock star, who has previously said the UK's vote to leave the EU was based on "lies", hit out at politicians for not caring about the poor, sick or animals. Speaking ahead of the release of a new album with West End actress Kerry Ellis, May told the Press Association:

"I think the world is going to pot, including this country. We've become a nation that only thinks about money and I think it's absolutely appalling, and it applies to America as well, it's probably about to apply to France."

Later this year, May will appear at the Hay Festival to speak about a new book, and said he hoped to bump into US senator Bernie Sanders, who last year ran for the Democratic Party nomination for US president and will make a speech at the event in Hay-on-Wye, Wales.

The 69-year-old musician said he felt "upset" about the current political climate, adding: "The prime area is nationalism and pure selfishness, there's nobody in power these days who actually cares about poor people or animals or sick people.

"We have those kind of leaders now who only understand economics and they probably don't understand economics either."

Golden Days, which is released on Friday, is May and Ellis's second collaboration, following 2010's Anthems. The album includes five original compositions as well as new rock arrangements of the duo's favourite songs.

Of the record, Ellis promised it would cover a "diverse" range, adding:

"It's got a bit of everything on it, it goes from a small, intimate song where it is just the two of us and goes to something so huge, so orchestral."

BADGERS V FARMERS:
FINALLY WE'RE GETTING AWAY FROM THIS POLARISED DEBATE

GUARDIAN
Badgers Notebook
Badgers v farmers: finally we’re getting away from this polarised debate
3 April 2017 by Patrick Barkham

Bovine TB has been detected in everything from earthworms to cats. Rather than culling, we need a different way to compensate those who’ve lost cattle.

3 badgers

Monday 3 April 2017 17.53 BST
Last modified on Monday 3 April 2017 17.54 BST

The belief that badgers possess superpowers is supported by cameras in Utah’s Grassy Mountains, which have revealed a badger working for four days to bury a calf carcass much bigger than itself, before digging a new home next door.

The American badger, Taxidea taxus, is a different species to Britain’s native badger, but Meles meles is granted similar superpowers. It reshapes our landscape – their spectacular earthworks recently closed a Devon lane – and it destroys cattle. Badgers are widely believed to be the wildlife reservoir responsible for transmitting bovine TB to thousands of cattle, costing taxpayers £100m each year.

I attended a conference last week organised by Queen guitarist Brian May which gathered top scientists, vets, policymakers and some farmers to discuss bovine TB. This excellent symposium was a welcome antidote to the polarised debate between those for and against England’s badger cull, which killed 10,866 of the animals last autumn.

It was also an antidote to our badger-obsessed society’s cognitive bias. Because the badger is popularly considered to be spreading bovine TB, scientists are mostly funded to investigate its contribution to the disease. Seek, and ye shall find – a complicated picture in which cattle are the primary cause of infection and badgers avoid cows but may indirectly introduce the disease into some uninfected herds.

In fact, the conference revealed that bovine TB’s wildlife reservoir is actually our countryside. One study has found that bovine TB can survive outside an animal host – in the soil, say – for more than a year. And the disease has been detected in everything from earthworms to cats, sheep, pigs, alpacas and deer (I know one Exmoor farmer convinced that deer have transmitted it to her cattle).

Given that bovine TB is virtually endemic in certain regions, it is bizarre that a supposedly free-market government continues to pay compensation for cattle lost to this disease when a farm has endured it for a decade or more. Farmers have no incentive to diversify.

A quid pro quo closer to Tory principles would be to fund some badger culling but withdraw compensation for farmers if they have been “shut down” by bovine TB for, say, five years. This is not to criticise farmers. The disease is not their fault. In an ideal world, we’d accept that the badger is not a super-powered bovine TB spreader, consumers would pay twice as much for milk, and scientists would be funded to discover how better to combat this tricky disease’s spread through our soil and countryside.

A new endangered species

I came away from this conference newly optimistic because (anti-cull) Brian May is quietly working behind the scenes with some farmers to tackle bovine TB. Bravo. Hope is triggered by an awareness of human actions to repair our relationship with the planet. In that spirit is #EarthOptimism day in Britain on 22 April. Free talks in Cambridge will reveal Colombians’ coexistence with jaguars and Brazil’s reduction in deforestation, but also inspiring local examples – rewildling Wallasea Island, restoring the Fens. There’s also a “solutions fair” to marshal action. Optimism – an endangered species being brought back from the brink.

The beaver burger

There are now so many beavers in Germany that a politician called Klaus Burger (this reeks of April fool) has published recipes for cooking the protected mammal. Opponents say this is tasteless, but is it? I once ate roadkill badger. During my train ride home, it returned on me. So I know what I think. READ MORE

Exclusive: Brian May and Kerry Ellis release video for their new single Roll With You - from upcoming album Golden Days

Brian May and Kerry Ellis have released a video for their new track Roll With You exclusively with Classic Rock.

The song features on their upcoming album Golden Days which will launch on April 7 via Sony Music.

May tells Classic Rock: “Roll With You is a song we already staged on our last tour. I had the idea for the track as a kind of figurative biography of Kerry, built around her favourite sayings and attitudes. I wanted to give her something to sing which embodied her philosophy and the fun she has with life.

“She liked it, and we worked on it together to complete the track as a kind of anthem. At that point, the working title for the album was Anthems II – but when Sony snapped us up, we felt like it was a new beginning, not just another chapter.

“Fitting, because by the time this album was finished, we realised we’d evolved a long way from the Anthems album. The sessions in the studio that led us to this point were truly Golden Days, so there was the title, staring us in the face!”

May continues: “Since we played this song on our tour of Eastern Europe last year, we came back with videos of us performing it, using a neat device we’d cooked up to bring the audience into the mix. We were able to make a video from the footage we’d collected.”

Ellis adds: “I just love this video, we had so much fun performing this song live on our last tour and so glad we managed to capture it on film, now we can share all the best bits in the new video. Enjoy!”

Golden Days sees the pair collaborate on new compositions and cover versions – including a take on Gary Moore classic Parisienne Walkways. It’s now available for pre-order.. READ MORE
