**Fri 17 Jul 15** QUEEN GUITARIST AND ASTROPHYSICIST BRIAN MAY HELPS PLUTO TEAM EXAMINE DATA Direct link Musician, singer, songwriter and astrophysicist Brian May says 'it's a thrill' to be working with the New Horizons project. He may be better known for rocking out on tracks like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Fat Bottomed Girls,” but Queen guitarist Brian May was at NASA headquarters Friday [17 July] to talk about a different kind of rock – Pluto, to be specific. May, who holds a PhD in astrophysics, was in attendance for NASA’s latest briefing on New Horizons’ historic flyby of Pluto, which took place earlier this week. May was there as a “science team collaborator.”
Though he spoke only briefly, May told the New Horizons team he was thrilled to be in attendance. “I’m one of those people in Europe who’s been following your every move on our laptops and TVs, in our offices and in our bedrooms,” he said, standing in the audience. "What an amazing achievement. You have inspired the world. Thank you.” On Tuesday, New Horizons became the first spacecraft to ever visit Pluto after completing an almost decade-long journey. Principle investigator Alan Stern told the audience that May had travelled from Europe to help the team work with the data they were receiving from the spacecraft following its journey past the dwarf planet. From 1970 to 1974, May worked on his PhD at Imperial College in London, England, but abandoned his studies as Queen gained international success. In 2006, May returned to the school to complete his studies, earning his degree in 2007. PLEASE JOIN US on | |||||||||||||||

--- NASA NEW HORIZONS PLUTO FLYBY PHOTOS AND FIRST EXTRACT: NASA had its own surprise on Earth and introduced Brian May, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist, during Friday's presentation.
NASA New Horizons has delivered all the goods with Pluto. The flyby Tuesday was a success and even before the moment, the spacecraft delivered our best look at the dwarf planet and helped determine its actual size. The hits continued Friday with even more photos from Pluto. After the phone home and first batch of images from NASA's New Horizons, Pluto dazzled with ice mountains. The surprises continued with chasms and craters on Charon, one of Pluto's moons. As an added bonus, we got out first glimpse of Pluto's moon hydra. Pluto and Charon are geologically active, which is another development that surprised scientists. Ahead of the new photos Friday, NASA released detailed images of Charon that revealed a mountain that is stumping scientists. "The mission has had nine years to build expectations about what we would see during closest approach to Pluto and Charon. Today, we get the first sampling of the scientific treasure collected during those critical moments, and I can tell you it dramatically surpasses those high expectations," John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said in a statement.
The Charon photo taken at 6:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday from around 49,000 miles has a mountain in the middle of a depression. NASA had its own surprise on Earth and introduced Brian May, Queen guitarist and astrophysicist, during Friday's presentation. Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, introduced a flyover video of Pluto and even more of the "frozen plains of Pluto." The dwarf planet's atmosphere had its time in the spotlight and it's made up of nitrogen, methane and hydrocarbons. The weak gravity of Pluto means the nitrogen atmosphere of Pluto is escaping into space. PLEASE JOIN US on | |||||||||||||||
**Thu 16 Jul 15** Queen guitarist and Downton actor disappointed at Beagle farm decision
Celebrities Brian May and Peter Egan both voiced his disappointment at the ruling to approve the expansion of a beagle farm near Withernsea. “I am sickened to hear that this facility is to go ahead, ignoring the views of the public and local authorities, and condemning these best friends of man to thousands of unethical and unnecessary tests. This is an appalling message for Britain to send out to the world.”
This is a tragedy that will see litter after litter of beagle pups reared for the laboratory, where these gentle animals will be force-fed and killed in crude tests that are of little use to people. But David Gatehouse from B&K Universal, which owns the site, says their concerns are misleading and that the new facility will be kinder on the dogs. PLEASE JOIN US on | |||||||||||||||

**Mon 13 Jul 15** GREAT NEWS - SNP will vote NO to Hunting Act changes... --- SNP.ORG The Scottish National Party Westminster Group met this evening and decided to vote against the Tory Government's attempt to relax the ban on fox hunting south of the border in Wednesday's vote. SNP Westminster Group Leader Angus Robertson MP said: "We totally oppose fox hunting, and when there are moves in the Scottish Parliament to review whether the existing Scottish ban is strong enough, it is in the Scottish interest to maintain the existing ban in England and Wales for Holyrood to consider. "We are in a situation where the Tory government are refusing to agree to any amendments to improve the Scotland Bill - which are supported by 58 of Scotland's 59 MPs - and imposing English Votes for English Laws to make Scotland's representation at Westminster second class. "In these circumstances, it is right and proper that we assert the Scottish interest on fox hunting by voting with Labour against the Tories' proposals to relax the ban - in the process, reminding an arrogant UK government of just how slender their majority is - just as we will vote against the Tory welfare cuts next week, and appeal to Labour to join us." NOTES: The Group position was agreed without a vote. PLEASE JOIN US on | |||||||||||||||
**Mon 13 Jul 15** Notice put out by League Against Cruel Sports: Tomorrow we are gathering outside Parliament with celebrities and other animal welfare organisations to raise our voices against the Government's plans to destroy the Hunting Act. We would love for you to join us. It is vital that we get big numbers so that MPs see the strength of public feeling against cruel sports such as fox hunting. We are gathering at 10.30am outside Parliament. You will also have the opportunity to enter Parliament following the rally and personally lobby your MP - nothing is more effective than face to face meetings and so this is a great opportunity to have your say. If you can't make it don't worry! You can join us in spirit by sharing details about the rally with friends and family that can be there. Also if you are on social media the #KeepTheBan hashtag is ablaze with people lobbying their MPs online so make sure to join in. Also take a look at our campaign page for a number of other ways in which you can help us protect the Hunting Act: Hunting with hounds, whether the victims are foxes, deer or hares, is nothing but a cruel pastime carried out by a minority who like to see animals ripped apart. I can assure you that we are doing everything that we can to protect the Hunting Act and stop this attempt to bring back animal cruelty in the countryside. But none of this could be possible without the support of people like you. Thank you so much for all of your support! Together we will make a difference for animals. Kind regards, PLEASE JOIN US on | |||||||||||||||
**Mon 13 Jul 15** Brian May’s Save Me opposes amendments to the Hunting Act 2004 Dr Brian May’s Save Me Trust strongly opposes the government's proposals to amend the Hunting Act 2004 using a draft Order. The government proposes to use a statutory instrument to change the exemptions under the Act, in order to use an unlimited number of dogs in exempt cases. At present, the exemptions only apply where a maximum of two dogs are used. The government claims that it is amending the exemptions to bring them into line with the current position in Scotland. Anne Brummer CEO said “The use of a draft Order, rather than a Bill to amend, is a good example of 'cherry picking' some of the bits of the Scottish legislation, that favour hunters, without also taking on the related obligations. Most notably, the Scottish legislation has the possibility of higher penalties to go with its more liberal approach to the number of dogs used. The power to amend the existing exemptions by order does not permit amendment of penalties and thus underlines the inappropriateness of the approach of using a draft order.” It should also be noted that there are only 10 registered hunts in Scotland, compared to the 310 in England and Wales, so the issues of enforcement are hardly comparable. Brian May said, “If the government wishes to amend or repeal the Hunting Act 2004, it should have the guts to bring forward a Bill, as it suggested it would during the election campaign. They are simply running scared of the level of opposition such a move would produce. 80 per cent of the electorate is against the repeal of the Hunting Act 2004. The draft Order is a move to avoid the kind of debate that a Bill would engender and to curtail the time allowed for debate of the proposed changes.” The government's supporters have suggested that bringing the legislation in England and Wales in line with that in Scotland, would be beneficial to farmers. **Mon 13 Jul 15** Brian May will be taking outside Parliament on Tuesday in support of the Hunting ban. Please go along and show your support. ---
BRIAN MAY TO LEAD ANTI–FOX HUNTING RALLY Ahead of Wednesday’s free vote, Queen guitarist and committed animal campaigner Brian May – along with May's Save Me Trust, PETA, the RSPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports, Born Free, Lush and Humane Society International – will descend on Westminster, urging policymakers to keep Britain humane by keeping the Hunting Act intact. The group will let the public in on the high stakes of the vote: that amending the existing rules to increase the number of dogs allowed to flush out wild animals would, for all intents and purposes, make fox hunting legal again.
BATH CHRONICLE Animal rights activists will descend on Westminster on Tuesday (July 14) with one clear message: keep the Hunting Act intact. On Wednesday (July 15) MPs will vote to either keep the law as it stands or change it, which could make fox hunting legal. Queen guitarist Brian May will head the campaign march, which will include PETA, the RSPCA, the League Against Cruel Sports, Born Free, Lush and Humane Society International.
Tory MPs will hold a free vote, meaning its MPs are free to vote as they please. Labour are expected to vote in favor of keeping the law which they introduced in 2004. They have called on the SNP to get involved, who would not normally vote on matters which have no affect on Scotland, and rebel against the Conservatives. Speaking ahead of the vote, PETA director Mimi Bekhechi said: "UK citizens have made their voices heard and support a ban on the cruel and destructive practice of hunting these vulnerable, fragile animals. We're calling on decisionmakers to heed their constituents by maintaining the current limit on hunting with dogs." Save Me Trust CEO Anne Brummer said: "We are appalled and shocked that the government would try to bring back fox hunting in 2015. It is turning the clock back on cruelty and against the will of 80% of the population." PLEASE JOIN US on |
