Here is a recent interview with BRIAN MAY....

Jim Kerr interviews Brian May Q104.3 New York 18102013 - http://youtu.be/U-3jdtH26Hg

ABOUT THE VIDEO:

Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May stopped by the "Jim Kerr Rock & Roll Morning Show" Friday morning and gave a great interview and impromptu guitar performance for listeners. May discussed a number of topics including the possibility of a new Queen album, his new book "Diableries: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell," the Freddie Mercury movie, and much more!

May confirmed that he is working on a new album of old Queen recordings. "There is more than I thought there...there's those couple of tracks we've been telling people about with Michael Jackson...a mixture of old and new I think," May explained. "I'm working on one particular track which nobody's going to expect that's just Freddie singing a beautiful song."

May also talked about the Freddie Mercuy movie and revealed that the band has an unknown actor in mind for the part. "We have somebody very much in mind, who is not quite signed on the dotted line yet, but yeah he's a young and upcoming and wonderful actor and a face you probably don't know, but you will soon."

While in studio May also pulled a guitar off the wall in the Q1043 studios and started playing for everyone! As May said, "I just like guitars in the morning."

NEWS RELEASE: ANIMAL GROUPS HOPE FOR CULL U-TURN IN 'CRITICAL'
HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATE THURSDAY, 13 MARCH
Direct link

Anti-cull animal groups led by members of Team Badger - including Brian May’s Save Me organisation, IFAW and the League Against Cruel Sports - are hoping to persuade the Government to stand down on its badger cull policy, having secured a backbench debate to be held in the House of Commons this Thursday,13 March.

The groups have the support of St Albans MP Anne Main who has led a cross-party group of MPs who wanted the issue brought back for debate in the main chamber of the Commons.

The debate follows recent revelations from a leaked Independent Expert Panel (IEP) report on the pilot badger culls in West Somerset and West Gloucestershire. The report concluded that the pilot culls were ‘ineffective and failed the humane test’. The Conservative think tank, the Bow Group, has this week published a paper saying that culling badgers is ineffective, costly and unscientific, and recommends vaccination as the only current option.

The group has called on supporters to contact their MPs to ensure they attend the debate and vote in favour of the motion, asking them to look at the scientific evidence and promote a vaccination alternative. The group is supporting the recent launch of the Badger and Cattle Vaccination Initiative, set up by the Save Me organisation as the way forward in controlling TB in cattle. www.bacvi.co.uk

This debate is seen as the most important badger debate in Parliament, and critical in the campaign to stop the badger cull, with the possibility that the Government could announce two new cull zones in early April, initiating the national roll-out of the badger cull.

DEFRA Ministers have said they will take a decision on whether to extend the cull after they have reviewed the findings of the IEP (that monitored last year’s pilot in Somerset and Gloucestershire).

Findings from the leaked report indicate that the pilots removed less than half of the estimated numbers of badgers over six weeks in both areas. It also found that the number of culled badgers that took longer than five minutes to die exceeded the five per cent limit set as a measure of humaneness, according to the BBC.

The badger cull has twice been debated in main chamber of the House of Commons over the past 18 months, with the Government losing the vote in Autumn 2012 but winning last June only after David Cameron introduced a three-line whip.

Mrs Main, who has received cross-party support for Early Day Motions opposing the policy, said: “I am asking the Government to pause, reflect and adapt its policy for tackling Bovine TB.

“The pilot culls have failed on all of the Government¹s own criteria, including humaneness.

“I do not believe the Government should allow more licences to be granted until Members have considered, debated, and voted on the motion before the House.”

Brian May, founder of Save Me and Team Badger said: “Now that the failure of this whole badger cull shambles can be seen so clearly seen it must be time to abandon the concept, and get on with the only strategy which can ultimately succeed in eradication of bovine TB - vaccination of badgers and other wildlife, and prioritisation of work to license the vaccine for cattle.

"Under pressure from the NFU, the Government has wasted a huge amount of public money on this misguided cull. It is time for them to admit the failure of this policy and adopt a more effective and humane approach to help farmers, rather than adding to their woes.”

BRIAN MAY - FROM ROCK STAR TO BADGER CHAMPION
Direct link

Recent interview Brian did for The Ecologist...

THE ECOLOGIST
10 March 2014 by Lesley Docksey

Brian May is best known as lead guitarist for the rock band Queen. But as Lesley Docksey discovers, he is also an astrophysicist, and a committed - and highly effective - advocate for Britain's wild animals, including badgers put at risk by the UK's cull programme.

"I always had an interest in animals. As a child at Sunday school I struggled with the idea that only humans had souls. And the Bible said 'man had been given dominion over animals'. I was later told this was a mistranslation, and should read that man has 'care' over animals - but this still didn't satisfy me."

Like many of us, Brian was never quite at ease with the thought that 'animals' had second place, behind humans. And then something else made him question humanity's central place in the Universe - astronomy.

"An astronomer only has to look out into the universe to realise we are just a small planet circling a very ordinary star", says Brian, who took a doctorate in astrophysics. "Ptolemy's belief that the universe circled the earth was crazy."

Brian May outside Parliament

So how did he end up campaigning for our wildlife?

"Well, you know how it is. You spend most your time doing what life has presented to you, in my case Queen. But one day, although I'm still involved in music, I found I had the time, the space and the means to do other things, things that I also cared about."

What inspired him to found Save Me, a "non-profit organisation that speaks out about the cruel minority in our society that feels it is their right to persecute and torture wildlife for sport"? Was it foxhunting, badgers ... ? No, it was ...

"Hedgehogs."

So, from studying the universe he came right back down to earth, to fight for something that, though small, was in his view as important in the scheme of things as a star ... or a galaxy.

"I read one day about the hedgehogs on the Scottish Uist islands, and the plans to kill them all because they were eating the eggs of the ground-nesting birds. How could people kill them like that? Didn't they matter too? I went up to Scotland and got involved with the campaign to save the hedgehogs. And the Scottish RSPCA was one of the organisations in favour of the killing! Can you believe that? We persuaded them to relocate the hedgehogs to the mainland. After all, hedgehogs are in trouble here - there are fewer and fewer of them and we need them. And when we achieved that relocation, the feeling - the realisation that I could help make a difference - that was wonderful! But it also made me see how easy it is for people to see killing inconvenient wildlife as the answer to a problem, when the animals themselves have no voice. And Save Me was born."

Fighting the badger cull

It was only natural that Save Me would take up the cause of the badgers when the proposed culls threatened another of our ancient and loved members of the British landscape - as did many other organisations devoted to the care of animals and our wildlife. Not that it's unconcerned about cattle farmers whose herds are afflicted with BTB. As Save Me makes clear on its website: "Save Me fully sympathises with farmers who are effected by this awful disease but it does not believe, based on scientific evidence, the solution lies in the culling of badgers. It believes culling could make matters worse."

Next Team Badger was formed, "a coalition of national, local and grass roots animal and wildlife welfare organisations representing millions of compassionate citizens" who "reject the government's policy of badger culling as unsound, unscientific and unacceptable."

With Brian at its head the plight of the badger - and the unscientific dishonesty of the culls - remained in the news. Through the whole sorry, cruel process of the culls, Team Badger and its members called government ministers to account, questioned their 'facts' and kept the public informed.

Cull ineffective, failed humaneness test

It came as no surprise to Brian when details from the Independent Expert Panel's report were released, saying that the culls had failed both in their humaneness and effectiveness. At the same time the Humane Society International UK released facts from Natural England, showing that the monitoring of the guns had been poor to say the least; that badgers were taking too long to die, and had to be shot more than once.

"Well, we knew it was going to be bad. Yes, we did, and it was no comfort to say 'I told you so', when so many creatures had taken too long to die painful, horrible deaths." But even then he managed to laugh at the silly excuses and justifications put forward by the pro-cull people.

"I was interviewed by the BBC that morning, and found myself arguing with a farmer and a vet - how can a vet excuse what had been done? I talked about the fact that it was likely that the culls would contribute to an increase of BTB because of the perturbation effect - infected badgers fleeing and taking the disease to another area. I was told it was the protesters who had caused the perturbation! And the reason for the poor marksmanship - well, protesters were to blame for that too! How could anyone fire a clean shot when he was being watched by a protester? Not that any protesters were allowed to get that close to the guns."

The conversation turned to badger baiting, foxhunting - "the Tories will do their best to repeal that law!" - and the dreaded terrier men belonging to the hunts, who send their dogs underground to flush out foxes gone to ground.

"They're all linked, all part of 'country pursuits' - or 'blood sports' to name it more honestly. The badgers aren't safe, which was one reason for creating BACVI."

Vaccination works

BACVI, for those who don't already know, is another of Brian's creations, the Badger And Cattle Vaccination Initiative. Launched in early February in the wake of the disastrous badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire, it promoting vaccination - of both badgers and cattle - as the sustainable solution to bTB.

How long was that idea in the making?

"We started thinking about it in 2012 when we went to Brussels. We were constantly being told by Ministers that we couldn't vaccinate cattle against TB because of restrictions imposed by the EU. They said the EU was prohibiting the necessary field trials. We wanted to find out if this was true. And it wasn't. They'd love us to vaccinate our cattle! They want us to get on with it!"

There is a vaccine already - BCG - but it has a downside. It interferes with the mandatory tuberculin skin test, so you can't tell the difference between a vaccinated cow and one that is genuineless infected with BTB. What's needed is a reliable DIVA test. For the uninitiated, DIVA stands for 'Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals', so a DIVA vaccine is one that makes it possible to tell the difference between infected and vaccinated animals.

Lo and Behold! A DIVA test is developed

Brian May plays with young badger

Last year the AHVLA - that's Defra's Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency - announced they had developed a DIVA test. Field trials of the DIVA vaccine are needed before a full scale cattle vaccination programme can take place - trials that Defra had told us were prohibited by the EU.

As an aside, Brian points out, members of the general public can become vaccinators by going on a 4-day AHVLA course, and then applying for a certificate of competence. Training is also provided by local badger groups on sett survey and other essentials - "so people can get involved without doing the full training course."

We can only wonder why so much time has been wasted by Defra and its ministers. Had Defra - and its political masters including Owen Paterson - resisted the NFU's siren calls for badger culling, they could have been pushing forward the real solution to BTB.

Herd immunity

"Vaccination is far less disruptive for badgers, and it's not as if every badger in a family group has to be vaccinated", says Brian. "So long as you vaccinate enough a badger group enjoys herd immunity. This is all to do with big landowners too. I know they're mostly conservatives, but we have some powerful Tories backing us now - just look at the report the Bow Group has done."

Among the Bow Group's findings: "Trials have shown vaccination to reduce the incidence of positive serological BTB test results by almost 74%"; and: "A vaccination programme combined with improvements in biosecurity would be the most efficient way to minimise BTB spread and cost to the taxpayer."

Experience from Wales is proving BACVI right. Commenting on the trial badger vaccination programme carried out at BTB hotspots in Wales, combined with country-wide biosecurity, Wales' Natural Resources Minister Alun Davies recently told Parliament:

"You will see in Wales that the number of cattle slaughtered in the last year is down 33%; the equivalent statistic for the rest of GB is 14% - less than half. In terms of the number of herds being affected by bovine TB, we have seen reductions of 23%; the equivalent number in England is 6%."

An entrenched minority that's not changing its spots

So how does Brian feel about the future? Is he encouraged by the number of people who had become engaged in the anti-cull protests? And that what to engage in positive solutions, like joining badger groups and carrying out badger vaccination?

"Well, yes, but ... "

His voice, so full of enthusiasm for the campaigning and the willingness to laugh at the ridiculous statements of people like Environment Secretary Owen Paterson, became dark, sombre - and sad. There is an entrenched, bloodthirsty minority in Britain that's not about to change its ways.

"I don't think we'll ever persuade them to stop the killing. They like doing it."

U-TURN INHUMANE BADGER CULL SAYS BRIAN MAY
Direct link

Brian appeared in a report on the Badger cull on BBC Points West:

Brian May

BRIAN MAY:

"All I would say is please draw a line under the cull now. Mr Cameron it's time to make one of the best u-turns you ever made in your life.

How much proof do you need this is not gonna work?

This has been a botched scheme from the beginning. They were warned in the beginning it wasn't gonna work. Lord Krebs who's really the world expert on TB in cattle said this is a crazy scheme. This is quite strong words from the top scientist.

It was never gonna work. It was never gonna make life easier for the farmers."

PARALYSED MAN RAISES OVER $36,000 FOR CHANCE TO WALK, GIVES IT AWAY

Here's video of Daniel Black's story and a presentation of his award from legendary Queen guitarist Brian May.

CHRISTIAN POST
4 March 2014 by Eric Corpus
Paralyzed Man Raises Over $36,000 for Chance to Walk Again, Gives It Away in Shocking Surprise (VIDEO)

Daniel Black was riding his bike to work one morning in December 2009 when a car hit him. He was severely hurt and placed in an induced coma for six weeks to minimize brain damage. When he awoke, the news was devastating. Broken spine resulting in spinal cord injury. Paralysis in three limbs.

On the day of his accident, he was only three days from achieving his dream of joining the British army. He was an accomplished bass player in a band. Now doctors told him he'd never walk again.

Upon hearing that an innovative stem cell treatment might help him walk, Black's family raised over £22,000 – over $36,000 – to help fund it. However, not even a penny of it went to his miracle cure, all because of a little boy named Brecon.

Brecon Vaughan was born with cerebral palsy, and his only chance of walking was a £60,000 ($100,000) procedure in the United States. The Vaughans had only raised £11,000 up to that point. When Black saw six-year-old Brecon's story in the newspaper last July, he decided to give all of his money to Brecon. Once the story got out, the Vaughans raised the rest in days.

To Black, it was an easy decision. "That little boy hasn't walked for 22 seconds. I walked for 23 years."

The story of Daniel Black's sacrifice quickly spread throughout Britain last year, and he was honoured in the Pride of Britain Awards last July. Brecon reportedly traveled to the U.S. in October for his procedure, and we await word on his status.

THE MOST IMPORTANT BADGER DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT EVER
Direct link

BACVI

TEAM BADGER have secured a Back Bench Business Debate!

The Independent Evaluation Panel (IEP) says culling badgers is inhumane and ineffective. The Conservative think tank, The BOW Group, says culling badgers is ineffective, costly and unscientific and it tells us to vaccinate as the only option at this moment in time.

We can vaccinate badgers through a volunteer led scheme; Badger and Cattle Vaccination Initiative. (www.BACVI)

It's really important that you share this post and you ask everybody that is a UK voter to email their MP today.

Tell your MP we can vaccinate, tell them it's the only viable solution that's ready now.

Give them this link, (www.BACVI) and tell them to go to the Back Bench Business Debate in the House of Commons on the 13th March; it's a full day debate.

BRIAN MAY INTERVIEW RUSSIAN MAXIM MAGAZINE
QUEEN GUITARIST BRIAN MAY: "THE ISSUE OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE WAS NOT ON OUR AGENDA"

Brian May

Brian was recently interviewed by Maxim Magazine April 2014 edition ahead of his Moscow concert with Kerry Ellis - and this appears in the April 2014 edition:

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A ROUGH GOOGLE TRANSLATION
=========================================

MAXIM - March 2014

QUEEN GUITARIST BRIAN MAY: "THE ISSUE OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE WAS NOT ON OUR AGENDA"
Legendary Party Queen olden days are remembered and told why everyone should come on March 16 at his Moscow concert.

Brian, there are rumors about a new disc with archive recordings Queen ...

BRIAN MAY: We thought nothing was left. But then came up a few things, and even I was surprised that they survived. This unfinished record. With the new technology we are able to complete them without Freddie, as we did once on the album Made in Heaven. We hope to release before the end of the year.

You yourself will sing?

Why? Everyone wants to hear the voice of Freddie.

Whereby of kuinovskih [old??] times you miss most?

Well, not exactly on the tour nine months a year ... I still feel like a member of the family, which for all of us was Queen. It is no substitute. And, of course, miss Freddie himself. It's like I lost a brother.

Than the real Freddie Mercury different from how we see it?

From the side, it seemed that he was light-headed, head in the clouds. But he was very focused and specific, always very articulate their thoughts, separating what is important to him and what is not. It sometimes seemed not very polite. If the wrong time come up to him and asked, "Can an autograph?" Freddie could say, "No, you can not." And if he was very busy, he could speak and stronger: "F**k off, darling". And many responded this way: "Wow! Freddie Mercury himself told me 'F**k off'! Wow! "I remember we had to play in South America, there was a quarter of a million spectators. And before the show, the interviewer asked him, "What is it - to speak [perform] before such a huge audience?" Freddie said: "I do not know, we do not yet made," [Haven't done it yet] that we are very amused.

You wrote half the hits Queen, but for the layman Queen - Freddie is. Not hurt?

No. Freddie was the face of the group, and it was our common conscious decision. I myself came up with the cover design of the first disk, and there, if you remember, we have only he in the spotlight.

Brian, you are not quite typical rock star: scientist, astronomer, no drugs and alcohol, no bullying.

Perhaps it's true, I'm not typical. While we were all in their own way atypical. But no one ever came to me and said: "Why do not you defeated [demolish] a hotel room? You're a rock star! "Yes, we threw a fun party, but the issue of alcoholism and drug addiction was not on our agenda.

We are still under the impression of your presentation to George Michael tribute to the memory of Freddie. You never thought to ask him to perform with you?

We are very good friends with George, and he's a great singer, but we are too different and musically and stylistically. So the answer is no. Besides, he has his own career, he is unlikely to want to throw.

What do you feel when your in the stadium sing We Will Rock You?

I am very proud ... and always smiling, and even maybe a little blush. At such moments, I feel that music can sink into the human soul is much deeper than is generally thought of songs that played on the radio.

So, Brian, tell me what can we expect from your concert with Kerry Ellis? This is for your fans, fans of Queen or just for music lovers?

I think it's for those and for others, and for third. Our performances are not like Kerry concerts Queen, although we will perform many songs from the repertoire of Queen. This is something intimate, free and varying times from time. As if it is happening at home in the living room: we communicate with the public, burning candles, Kerry sings and I play guitar and a little keyboard. In this context, the old songs find new unexpected power. There will not only speakers, a little electricity too.

It is clear that wait in Moscow from Brian May. And what awaits Brian May from Moscow?

Since childhood, Red Square for all of us was a symbol of the enemy's territory, something very frightening. And now, visiting Red Square and feeling warm attitude of the people to myself, I still feel some kind of mystique. And this applies to the whole of Moscow. Over the years, Moscow Europeanized, but I would not want her to lose that mystique.

You well settled into the new digital world:'re blog, sitting in the "Twitter" ...

Accounts! Maybe it was given to me easily because I am, as you know, also an astrophysicist, scientist. I talk a lot virtually, though during Queen I had little contact with the world, I did not even reply to letters fans - thought that I do not have time. And now I'm writing a tweet - and dozens of people I meet, and I tell them. I do charity, animal rights, and without the internet I would have just not been able to conduct this operates. BACK ROCK AGAINST CANCER GIG IN TINY VILLAGE PUB

Paul McCartneyCONCERT AT THE KINGS
28 February 2014 by Viarti Vern

Three of Britain’s biggest rock stars – Sir Paul McCartney, Brian May and Sir Bob Geldof – are backing a ‘Rock Against Cancer’ concert at a pub in a tiny Wiltshire village.

The legends are helping to promote the concert at The Kings Arms in the hideaway hamlet of All Cannings, near Devizes, on Saturday May 31st.

Sir Paul and Queen guitarist Brian May are leading a social media campaign to raise awareness of the cancer charity event.

Live Aid leader Sir Bob is fronting the reformed Boomtown Rats to headline the ‘Concert At The Kings’ show in the village that has a population of only 630.

‘Rock Against Cancer’ was an idea thought up by three residents of All Cannings who have each fought with cancer – pub landlord Richard Baulu, sound engineer John ‘Grubby’ Callis and the village’s own local hero, Andy Scott, guitarist with Seventies chart-toppers The Sweet.

They launched the annual event two years ago. Artists including Jeff Beck, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Mike & The Mechanics, Midge Ure and Tom Robinson have performed and help raise more than £35,000 for cancer charities.

This year the organisers are aiming to raise the profile of the little-known gig by asking stars to help a social media campaign by posing in ‘Rock Against Cancer’ T-shirts – and first to respond were Sir Paul, Brian May and actress-singer Kerry Ellis, star of The Queen musical ‘We Will Rock You’.

‘We’re hugely grateful for this fantastic support to put the concert on the map,’ said Richard Baulu. ‘It’s a great boost for the cause to have such rock giants in our campaign T-shirts.’

Five bands playing hits covering 30 years of rock will perform at this year’s event, staged in a field adjoining the Kings Arms beer garden – The Boomtown Rats, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, The Troggs, Paul Young’s Los Pacaminos and Dire Straits spin-off The Straits. Money raised from the gig will go to Macmillan Cancer Support and the Bristol hospital oncology support charity Above and Beyond.

‘We're hoping to take our total raised to over £50,000 this year,’ said John Callis, ‘We all know friends and family who have been affected by cancer and we realise the huge need for investment in research and support. With all of this help, we will beat this!’

SEPARATE HOUSES: SECRET OF ANITA DOBSON & BRIAN MAY'S WEDDED BLISS
Direct link

SUNDAY EXPRESS
02 March 2014 by Adam Helliker

The secret of a happy relationship? There's no question in the view of Anita Dobson, who has been married for 14 years to Queen guitarist Brian May.

Anita Dobson and Brian May

STARS: Anita Dobson and Brian May [REX]

"Separate houses," declares Anita, 64, explaining that while she adores living in London, where she was born in the East End, Brian prefers the calm of Surrey, where he has a large house with an observatory in its grounds.

"We like being with each other but we also like different surroundings," she tells me. "I just have to be on a busy street with lots of things going on, while Brian prefers the country."

Their choice of environment is, of course, not the only difference between the two. Anita, best known as Dirty Den's wife Angie in EastEnders, admits she struggles to keep up with Brian's passion for astronomy (he has a PHD in astrophysics).

"Once he gets going you really have to keep up. I just go as far as I can with him and then I say, 'Would you like a cup of tea?'"
