LOOK OUT FOR BRITISH ANIMAL HONOURS
Direct link

Thursday 18 April 2013....

8-10pm – British Animal Honours show broadcast on ITV. We are in it - Anita and I.

And there are some great moments. To me the fact that this is televised for the first time is a very good sign.

A sign that Britain actually IS transforming into a nation of true animal lovers.

ANDY JOHNS - RIP
Direct link

ANDY JOHNS

Ouch.
So sad to hear of the passing of Andy Johns …
great record producer.
Lovely guy - patient, skilled, funny, encouraging, sharp ...
all the qualities you want in someone who is getting your music on to tape.

I remember him as one of the Olympic Studios team in Barnes …
playing around with varying tape speeds and early phasing … with George Chiantz …

He went on to become one of the very top rock producers in the world.

Condolences to all the family. Andy was such a great guy.

RIP.

MY DAD
Direct link

My Dad's birthday today – April 7th. Born in London, a cockney, in 1921, he would have been 92 today.

Harold served his country in the 2nd World War in the Royal Air Force,

flying as a navigator, in Mosquitoes and Beaufighters.

Harold May

Here he is, Harold May, in 1940, just before he met my Mum, Ruth Irving Fletcher, a Scot, serving in the WRAF.

Their only son Brian was born in 1947.

Around 1965 Harold and Brian completed a home-made, self-designed guitar – the 'Red Special.'
In 1977 Harold watched that guitar being played at Madison Square Garden, NYC.

Happy Birthday my Daddy, wherever you are.
You would be proud to see how your grandchildren – and great-grandchildren – are doing.

THE COMET PANSTARRS CONSOLATION PRIZE 3-D TREAT
Direct link

For those of us who had difficulty seeing this lovely comet through the blanket of light pollution around our homes … here is a consolation prize. This is how the comet would look if we had nice dark skies and eyes about 5 million miles apart … ! The comet is a pretty long way away - over a hundred million miles … so it would be hard to see any stereo detail except by fiddling it, like I have done here ! I can pretty much guarantee you won't find another 3-D picture of Comet PanStarrs anywhere else except this website !!

Enjoy ! Bri

Also check out this nice video of the comet (admittedly you need a magnifying glass!) and a good aurora display. Gotta hate these people ! ha ha !!

MORE EASTER THOUGHTS...
Direct link

[In reply to Stan Blank, commenting on Brian's earlier 'EASTER THOUGHTS...' see LETTERS]

I could not agree more, Stan. I'm going to italicise your sentence:

"I believe there is room in this wide wonderful universe for both science and spirituality".

Absolutely. And it would be a lot more productive if it were recognised that they speak of different domains.

I watch the fierce debates between Atheists and Creationists with some amusement.

In my view, it's pretty obvious they both protest too much !

OK - the Creationists are clearly bonkers, as Sir Patrick Moore so eloquently put it. But the Atheists are putting forward a belief – that nothing exists outside Science – for which they have no evidence. That's not very scientific !

Neither of these 'sides' can prove their case. An open mind is much more likely to see clearly !!!

And as for good and evil, if you read C.S. Lewis, you realise that there IS an absolute consensus on what 'right' means and what 'wrong' means - it's not arbitrary. 'Evil' is consciously doing what you know is wrong. Evil does exist. And so does Goodness. If these two exist, and they must exist outside the domain of Science, then who knows what else lies out there - beyond the limits of the observable Universe, which Science has charted so brilliantly. Nothingness? A higher power ? A higher truth ? A God ?

I don't believe anyone on Earth knows the answer for sure.

I hope you don't mind me putting this picture up, Shirley.

What a joy to work with you today in the studio.

Was that fun or what ?!

Can't wait to spill the beans !

- Had an amazingly fun day in studio today with a very creative songwriter called Shirley Higton. You will be hearing what we did soon ! Bri
- Few things cheer me up like creating with creative people; I even got to play some very loud guitar. I'm itching to leak what we did today !
- In truth Shirley didn't actually send me a demo ... she wrote a song for a great cause and I got to hear it. It will all become clear soon.

INTERVIEW WITH PETE HAMMERTON
Direct link

[Reader, Simon Mann, brought Brian's attention to this new interview with Pete Hammerton: www.comedychords.com/features/pete-hammerton/ - see LETTERS]

Ah ! thanks Simon.

It's good to read this … brings a lot of stuff back. And I only wish it was a video of Pete Hammerton, rather than text.

The only thing which puzzles me is I never joined a band called Unit 5 - I never played in public until we started with 1984 - the first gig being in Putney Boat House. But the rest of it is as I remember. We certainly used to play most lunch-hours, hiding in the cycle sheds or the library ! Woolly (Pete) could always play stuff better than me ! He was a great inspiration.

COMET PANSTARRS !!!
Direct link

I can hardly believe we have blue skies in London … cant remember when that happened.

Well, if you have blue sky above you …

COMET SPOTTERS! Tonight may be the night. Quick! Find a roof or open space. Look low above the NW Horizon after sunset. Use binoculars! they say you can't miss it if the horizon is clear of buildings or trees … and clouds!!

I'm off up on my roof ! I'll let you know how I do.

Good Luck!

RIP PHIL RAMONE
Direct link

PHIL RAMONE

Sad to see another respected friend depart this world. Phil Ramone was an imaginative and innovative man. A trail-blazer. I enjoyed working with him more than once … but most memorably on a track in aid of sustainability in power generation - in collaboration with Soundgarden. We got halfway through it and then realised our sustainable power source was inoperative. He said, "Oh, to Hell with it - let's just make music !"

RIP great bloke.

JOSEPHINE IS ALIVE
Direct link

New Life - a second chance.

Josephine

This is Josephine. A very small orphan. She's just 3 weeks old.

She's not even a handful - except at 2-hourly intervals during the night, when she needs the bottle, says Anne. !

Josephine was delivered to Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue www.harperaspreywildliferescue.co.uk/ three days ago by the RSPCA. She is still wobbly on her legs, and has that puppy-like brown face of a tiny fox cub (the vet who brought her to the RSPCA initially thought she was a puppy).

Josephine stereo

She's our second rescuee this year … the other, Napoleon, was quite sick when he arrived and is still struggling … we are hoping his antibiotics will kick in soon and pull him out of danger.

But Jo is in good form, gently blinking at the world, enjoying some TLC from a surrogate mother. When she grows bigger she will reject us humans … and a good thing too, of course. We, as a race, are not to be trusted. But little Jo knows nothing of this. For the time being she is safe, and heading towards a second chance, when she is ready, out where she belongs – in the wild. Some day, every animal on Earth will be granted this chance. But that will be along the road. Right now, in a small way, unhindered by those on the Dark Side who would apply the word 'vermin' to this little creature, we are able to give back life.

Happy Easter !
