SELFIE STICK RULES !!!
Direct link to this

Well, continuing the Selfie theme …

Yes ! I managed to acquire a stick (I think it's actually called Monopod) and a bluetooth shutter release …

and … of course I managed to make myself very annoying with it, all day ! Ha ha !

But it's a lot of fun.

Here's a nice moment. These lovely young people waited three hours for us tonight … and were so undemanding and full of positive energy.

So we had to do the stick thing !

This is how it came out ( note the silver stick at bottom of picture ) …

Selfie stick pic

and this is HOW it happened …

Selfie Stick Yoosun

See, this amuses my small brain !

To be continued …

Cheers !

GAYAGEUM IN ROCK !
Direct link to this

Following up on the Korean adventure trail …

Found this really great Gayageum version of a Jim Hendrix tune …

It seems to be electrified too ...

Watch how her face and body gradually let go and show the feeling she has for what she's playing …

I guess it's back to the drawing board for me !

THE SELFIE STICK CULTURE
Direct link to this

I'm fascinated by the change that's taken place in the way we, as tourists, behave out there. We used to take our Brownie box cameras to the world's beauty spots and capture the world around us, to take away and savour later at our leisure. But now we seem to go out and find the best view available, then turn our backs to it, and take a picture of ourselves ! Yes, the selfie culture has taken over. What does this tell us about ourselves ? We do it singly or as couples or small groups.

I hope I didn't invade this couple's privacy … they were very happy capturing themselves in the digital domain. I captured their moment in stereo. It was at the base of the Seoul Tower yesterday, on a platform where thousands of tourists have marked their visit in a different way, by attaching ornamental padlocks with their names on to the railings. That's something I've never seen in England.

Selfie In Korea - stereo

But now (obviously I don't get out enough!) I discovered a new craze … an extension of the selfie idea … a selfie camera on a stick ! It's marvellous ! Look !

Selfie Stick pic

Needless to say, in my endless fascination with optical toys … I have managed to obtain one of these gadgets !

Ha ha !!

Watch this space !

cheers

THE SEOUL TOWER - RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS
Direct link to this

I do like a tower ... and ascending this one was part of a great day off here in Seoul, at the end of which I felt I had some idea of where I was fortunate to find myself. Here's the view from the ground, but actually the tower sits atop a small mountain in the middle of the city, so at this point you're already about a thousand feet above most of the landscape. There's a cable car to get to this point, but we walked - a steep climb up the road … a tribute to my knee surgeon !

Seoul Tower North

The view from the top is impossible to capture .. this hyper stereo shows the view to the North, and the cable car in the foreground, but it's less than a hundredth part of the full vista … truly awe-inspiring. I felt very lucky to experience all this in the Autumn of my life !

RIP ROBIN WILLIAMS

Robin Williams

RIP Robin.

I hope you are smiling
wherever you are.

Feeling lucky is a great treatment for depression.

I was so so sad to hear of Robin Williams' tragic suicide. He really touched us all … how awful that we couldn't make him feel like life was worthwhile.

Those of us who suffer from depression can learn … by mentally putting ourselves outside our bodies and asking what we'd tell the person we are looking back at. It's a trick I learned at Cottonwood, Tucson, Arizona some years ago. But it ain't easy. When you're truly in that hole, nothing really works. You just have to believe that it will end.

ENJOYING A BIT OF SEOUL !
Direct link to this

This trip to Korea has already been a real treat - before we even play ! Excited about our first gig on this leg of our QAL tour.

Thanks to the kind people of Universal Music Korea, I now have a nice new toy - called a Gayageum.

Gayageum stereo

It's the sister of the Japanese Koto - which I played on our 'A Night at the Opera' many years ago, but, as some of you may notice, the intervals the strings are tuned in are different.

The one I played on 'The Prophet's Song' was actually a miniature replica, but very playable. This gayageum is half-scale and has a very nice tone.

Some of my Tweet pals asked me what it sounds like: so this will give an idea.

Brian May demonstrates new Gayageum - https://youtu.be/qO_g_jc5uvY

Tonight: SuperSonic in Seoul - our very first show here, ever. We're ready - with a new song in our repertoire, too.

Cheers Folks !

READY TO GET BACK ON THE HORSE !
Direct link to this

Well, I know I've been very silent these last 11 days.

Truth is I have been so physically and mentally below-par after our intense 24 dates in the USA I just haven't been able to get it together. It's as if the body (and soul) complies through all the high demands, and then, given the chance to rest, just implodes.

Still, I'm just about ready to get back out there. I've been attempting to strike a balance … between total rest and enough exercise to keep the muscles fit enough to jump back in the ring in Korea and Japan. If I'd not touched the guitar in this break, my left hand finger ends would have gone soft and probably blistered in Korea in the humidity. But if I'd kept playing at the same intensity as on tour, those swollen finger joints would have stayed bad. As it is, I'm not bad. The worst casualties were probably my FEET ! They are still very messed up, but that won't stop me running around in the Far East and Australia !

The most exciting thing that happened in Space in this period was the Rosetta probe, launched 10 long years ago, finally reaching its target … a tiny comet way out between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter … called 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko !

We're tending to call it the Rosetta Comet, in honour of the very clever people who have managed to put a satellite in orbit around it. Take a look at the video of what this amazing probe is seeing, from just a few miles away from the object, which turns out to be an intriguing unbalanced dumb-bell shape with a colossal hole at one end ! The comet itself is only just over a couple of miles across - and has a period of 6 years in its elliptical track around the Sun.

This is quite a feat !

Me and my pal Claudia Manzoni are obsessed with making stereo photographs of things like this …

A few weeks ago, while Rosetta was still thousands of miles away from its destination, the best stereo that could be assembled looked something like this …. in which the unequal dumb-bell shape can just be made out.

Rosetta stereo 1

But a couple of days ago was the exciting moment of the arrival of Rosetta - and - what an amazing spectacle !

Claudia and I made this stereo from pictures published two days apart (with luckily similar orientation and illumination !) - and - lo and behold - there was enough difference in viewpoint to get a decent stereo. In fact, there was a little too much of a 'baseline' so we've slightly lessened the parallax using some careful stretching.

This is still quite taxing on the eyes … but we think it's worth it ! We hope you agree ! Free-view it (Stereo and Freeview Notes ) or look at it using an OWL (preferably printed out)

Rosetta stereo 2

To me, this is the most exciting Astro stereo of recent times. It was Claudia who seized the opportunity of combining the two shots. So all cred to her.

If you want to see a low-res movie of the comet … try this … it's nice …

Rosetta finally reaches rubber ducky comet

Well, we're off (Queen and Adam Lambert) on the plane to Seoul tomorrow - so we'll be making some new friends !

Take care, folks, and hopefully we'll be doing this Queen +AL show a bit closer to home before too long !

Cheers !

READY TO ROCK, BIKE RALLY AND SUPERMOON
Direct link to this

It was hard to get this 'rest period' right. Cos finger ends have to be over-used every day to stay hard but my swollen finger joints and repetitive strain thumb joint needed proper rest.

Then there's the feet !

But I'm ready to rock !

Ah well, back to the 'day job' tomorrow !!! Thanks guys ! See you in Korea, Osaka and Tokyo. OK ... I AM excited.

Is it only me who thinks it's an incredibly stupid idea to immobilise the whole city of London for a whole weekend for a push-bike rally?
