Tracey Crouch, Andrea Jenkyns, Henry Smith etc are our greatest hopes to defeat Cameron's SI. Abstaining isn't perfect but better than a yes. It's a recognition that this SI is an embarrassment to decent Conservative MPs. Parliament is all about each issue being debated honestly, regardless of party.

Hey, dear Scots ! E-mail your SNP MP tonight and tell him you expect him/her to stand up against abuse of Wild Animals throughout Britain. The votes of you SNP guys on Wednesday could save our Wild Animals, or hurl us all back into barbarism. Don't let Privilege win again. Bri

Just to be clear, I think it's legitimate to aim anger at Cameron and his Government, but not at all Tories, many of whom are fighting with us.

And just to be clear, as far as we know, ALL Labour MP's will be fighting with us against the SI, except 3 - Kate Hoey, Irranca-Davies MP. ...

And just to be clear, lone Green MP Caroline Lucas is still one of the greatest advocates for our Wild Animals have ever had.

It's not about deals, it's about decency versus cruelty. But SNP will need Labour to defeat EVIL - English Votes for English Laws.

Cameron's attempt to return FoxHunting through the back door before anyone realised has raised the biggest storm of outrage for years.

I spoke to MPs today now getting 1500 E-mails in any one day, urging them to vote against the fox hunting SI - unprecedented numbers. Go ahead and write. If there's one thing I've learned in 5 years, it's that decent MPs DO pay attention to their inboxes.

Perhaps most shocking of all - what Foxhunting does to dogs. Up to 10,000 hounds destroyed every year.

Very interesting, Mr P.

You always penetrate to the real depths.

Thanks.

Yes, one of our other advisors also picked up on that sinister bit on disease - and noticed it could be used to set packs of hounds on badgers. God preserve us. Are they really that hideously devious ? Yes, probably they are.

To see the difference in force between the Scottish law and the English one is quite sobering. Six months in jail is the max sentence in Scotland. Just a fine in England. How dare Cameron pretend that this amendment brings the two acts into line ? I constantly try to find ways of believing that Cameron would not lie about things like this … surely not ? He’s a decent man, and our Prime Minister. But this ? It’s another deliberately misleading claim, as part of the pretence that this amendment is all about helping Highland farmers. Awful. It’s inconceivable that Cameron has not read these Acts, isn’t it ? Or didn’t understand what he read ? Of Paterson, I’d believe it … he’s really not the sharpest tool in the box … and I could believe he never bothered to really find all this out. He just wants full scale fox hunting back. But to be forced to believe that Cameron really IS all about bringing back cruelty ? Even though we’ve seen ample evidence which pointed in that direction before, it’s horribly upsetting.

“The new amendment is entirely geared to making prosecution more difficult.“

I don’t doubt that you’re right about this, too. Even more depressing.

We have to somehow let the public know about this … but of course Cameron has given us no time to do it. Deliberate, without a doubt. How can this be urgent enough a concern to warrant squeezing it in just before recess ? So Mammchiavellian. Well, he may just get away with it.

NOTES FOR SKY NEWS
Direct link

I went into Sky News this morning with some notes on the subject of the nefarious “SI”.

Of course in the event, I didn’t want to be reading anything … so I didn’t end up saying all of this. In particular, once I saw Owen Paterson’s face on the TV monitor, I somehow didn’t want to lay into him personally - it just didn’t seem appropriate. So I hope I was civil to him, even though I’m convinced he’s the mouthpiece for a very indecent scam.

So, for what they are worth, here’s what I might have said, and it’s a fairly good summing up of how we all feel about the so-called ‘technical amendment’ that the Government is tabling on Wednesday.

Bri

Owen Paterson ?  Is that the best you could do ? Couldn’t you get a minister ?  Where ‘s Liz Truss ?  She’s the Minister of the Environment, but then of course, it’s very telling that she’s not here.  Why ? The Government is pretending this is a farming issue, in which case DEFRA would be consulted and involved – we’d be hearing from Liz Truss for sure.

But that’s a pretence … a complete sham.  This is an issue of fox hunting.  Of torturing wild animals to death for fun.  And Owen Paterson is one of those old-fashioned Tory MPs who is all about fox hunting.

You kinda wanna be merciful to this man.

But he’s really NOT the sharpest tool in the box.

This is the man Cameron sacked last year after he’d made a series of memorable blunders … the flooding precautions, etc … but most memorable he’s the chap who will be immortalised in the words “The badgers moved the goalposts”.   This is a man who three times in the past (and he apparently tried to do it this time, too, but was foiled by Sky !) – has refused to debate head to head with me.   Now that’s, as I read it, a cowardly man.  And being cowardly is what fox hunting is about.  A bunch of grown men gang up to murder a healthy sentient, thinking, feeling mammal, almost indistinguishable from a dog – to set a pack of vicious hounds on it and torture it to death.  It makes them feel powerful … potent, especially if they have small penises ?

That’s what this disgraceful SI of the Government’s actually is about.

Do you really think a bunch of farmers went to Mr Cameron last week  and said … “Oh – we’re having trouble digging out foxes to shoot them – because we can only use two dogs. Please rush something through for us ?   We need to use a whole pack“ ?  You really think that’s what happened ?  No.  I’ve now been doing this campaigning stuff for about 6 years and I’ve met a lot of farmers along the way, and I have to tell you most of them are bloody decent blokes.  And they’re busy.  They really don’t spend their Sundays diggin’ out foxes from their Earths to shoot them !  (Owen, on the programme, tried to tell us that the upland farmers issue a call-out if foxes are terrorising them (!) and out goes the Hunt, like Rentokil, to save the day !!!)

No !  It’s about Hunting for sport.   It’s about a small group of traditionalist bullies, insisting on their right to ride rough-shod over everybody and everything that gets in their way – symbolized by their ‘Traditional’ right to kill animals in a vile, cruel fashion, just because in the past they’ve got away with it for years.  Even after the Hunting Act of 2004 they continued their despicable behaviour, but under the lie of Trail Hunting.  Someone lays a trail, BUT IT’S of FOX URINE … the hounds are trained to react to the scent of a fox, so … if a fox happens to be out that day, well, whoopee .. “Look ! …those hounds just followed a fox by accident !  We couldn’t stop them, could we?”

Look at it … This Government is always telling us how much it worries about the Economy, Europe, etc ? But it’s obsessed with … what priority ? Bringing back blood sports.   It’s almost unbelievable.

The Prime Minister is known to have ridden with his local hunt … the Heythrop Hunt … one of the notoriously cruel hunts in the country.   So have many of his ministers. And it’s hard to slide a cigarette paper between the Countryside Alliance and Cameron’s clique.

So here ‘s what REALLY happened over the last few weeks.  The Countryside Alliance, in which you have to include MP Simon Hart, (and others !) have been pressuring Mr Cameron for 6 YEARS to have a FREE VOTE on fox hunting.  All through the last session they didn’t get it, because they thought they would lose the vote, not having a majority in the HOC.   They wanted to bring in the “under the table modification” – the SI like we see now, but Clegg wouldn’t go with it.

So 2015 … Whoopee !  Mr Cameron gets a majority.  So can they bring in the free vote ?  Ah … bummer … lots of the new very decent Tory MPs – as well as almost everyone else  … make it known they won’t vote for repeal.   So suddenly the Countryside Alliance put out a statement saying “Well, we were never all-out set on a vote for repeal ?”   Really ? !!!   So then we all knew the underhanded procedure was coming.  The “Repeal by the Back Door” scheme.   So – suddenly – rushed through at an indecent speed, announced on Budget day so it wouldn’t get much attention – SNEAKY – we get the Statutory Instrument announcement – to modify the Hunting Act so that a whole pack of hounds can be used to “flush out a fox to shoot it” – instead of just two, as specified in the Act.

An SI, as detailed on the Government’s own website, is designed for adding small detail to a bill, that was too complicated to include in the Act.  Obviously this is not at all what THIS SI is.  Effectively it will disable the Hunting Act, and bring back Fox Hunting as it was before 20014 … because who will be able to tell what that pack of hounds is doing out there ? It’s deception.  It’s an evil Maccchiavellian plot.

Now we’ve seen that the claim that this SI is “to help Farmers” is bogus.

So what other false claims are being made to justify this very dodgy and unworthy use of an SI ?

  1. “It’s bringing the English Hunting Act into line with the Scottish one.”  This is another lie.  The 2004 Act was inspired by the 2002 Scottish Wild Mammals Act which is drafted in a very different way.  The penalties for breaking the law are much heavier for a start.  Nobody has mentioned that in Scotland you can put in prison for 6 months for breaking this law.  In England, it’s just a fine even if the case can be proved against you.  And there is specific provision to insist that suffering of animals is minimised – which is not in the English Act, and there are important differences in O & E – Observation and Experiment, which make the comparison dishonest.  And in fact the Scots have found that allowing more hounds to flush out for the supposed ‘shooting for pest control’ HAS made it easier for hunts to flout the law, so it would actually make sense to amend the Scottish law rather than the English one.  I AM HALF SCOTTISH !  The foxes really don’t care if they are Scottish or English.  Cruelty is an issue of world importance, never mind National and Cross-Border impact.
  2. “It’s about Pest Control”.  This is the biggest lie of all.  The Hunts have NEVER been about control of numbers of foxes.  Since the beginning, by their own words, Hunters have documented themselves preserving numbers so they have enough for their sport.  The Isle of Wight foxes are completely imported - in the 30s. Recently it’s been confirmed that on a huge scale, fox cubs are being BRED for hunting.  Barbaric, almost unbelievable.  But it’s not much different from breeding millions of pheasants purely to be shot for fun by blundering shooters.
  3. Lobby your MP !!!   E-mail him today.   Tell him you don’t want him to be a part of a return to barbarity.   Scots !  Write to your SNP MP  !!!!   We need the SNP guys to vote with us.   We know they are with us in spirit.

Lamb Predation and the Welsh Farmers.   In 2002 a paper was published by DEFRA, the results of a 5 year study which concluded that only a tiny 0.8 of 1 per cent of Lamb mortality is due to Foxes.  They said foxes had a negligible effect on Lamb mortality, and efforts to save lambs would be better served by other means than killing foxes.  The “Welsh Farmers” paper was an attempt to sabotage that report … sponsored by – guess who ? -  the Countryside Alliance !!!  You have to laugh.  The paper was not peer reviewed, and not in any sense impartial, so basically it’s not believable.  They said farmers need a pack of hounds to dig out and shoot foxes rather than just two !!

Fox hunting is a criminal activity.  Why are we listening to the Countryside Alliance ?  Would we be listening to the Drunk Drivers Association on relaxing the law on drunk driving ?   Would we be listening to a paedophile organisation on ‘relaxing’ a law protecting children from abuse ?  No – I don’t think so.

This Mail On Sunday article took him (the writer) over a week to write, and he’s put more of his own thoughts (mostly faulty) in than mine. I wish I hadn’t wasted two hours of my life that I’ll never get back with this writer. The stuff about “Probably Freddie would …” is completely made up. And all that stuff about me ‘hesitating’ and him getting some kind of ‘admission' out of me is crap. It’s not the first time I’ve told that little story about the bumble bee. But it’s the first time it’s been used to try to make me look stupid. Rubbish, and not helpful to anyone except those who would like to belittle what I do. Still … We may as well put it up here. Maybe soon we’ll publish the actual transcript of our conversation. Then we can all take a view on what his motives were, and how good a job he did. My motive ? For doing the damn interview ? I thought this man might help us in our fight to get justice for animals. He obviously felt it was more important to try to be clever and … funny ?

Disappointing … Well, can’t win ‘em all.

MAIL ON SUNDAY
At last! THAT'S why Brian May has such a bee in his bonnet about fox hunting: Queen guitarist still racked with guilt after taking deadly revenge on insects that scared him as a boy
12 July 2015 by Simon Walters

- Queen guitarist still racked with guilt after taking deadly revenge on insects that scared him as a boy
- Brian May, 67, says traumatic effect of killing flies as child left him guilty
- It set him on unlikely path from rock icon to powerful animal-rights activist
- Motivation came after killing a bee with a Flit gun and spraying blackfly
- He accused PM of a 'dishonest' attempt to bring back hunting by back door

Brian May
Guilt-ridden: Queen guitarist Brian May went from rock icon to a powerful
animal-rights activist

Freddie Mercury would probably have some sympathy with those pro-hunting supporters who find it difficult to understand rock guitarist Brian May’s ultra-hardline views on cruelty to animals.

May, who tried to stop the Government’s controversial badger cull – even writing an unlikely hit song about the issue – is now campaigning to prevent Tory MPs voting on Wednesday to relax anti-foxhunting laws.

The Queen guitarist says the band’s singer Mercury would tease him when they were on tour: ‘Oh Brian, I suppose you’re busy rescuing bloody flies in your hotel room again.’

Flamboyant Mercury was the archetypal sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll star until his death in 1991 from AIDS-related pneumonia. In contrast, May’s dazzling suits were strictly a stage persona: once off it, he was more likely to be found in his hotel room drinking tea – or rescuing flies.

In fact, Mercury wasn’t exaggerating with his comments about insects. It is not unheard of for young boys to singe a few or even cut the odd worm in half in juvenile acts of torture as they explore the natural world around them. The vast majority grow out of it and forget about it – but not May.

In the course of a revealing interview with The Mail on Sunday, it emerged that the traumatic effect of a series of incidents in his youth – including killing flies – set him on the unlikely path from rock icon to Britain’s most powerful animal-rights activist.

For such a softly spoken, outwardly gentle giant, May uses conspicuously violent language.

He says he ‘hates’ David Cameron’s stance on foxhunting, talks of a ‘fox Armageddon’, and calls his opponents ‘a bunch of lying b******s’ who pursue the ‘uniquely cruel’ sport out of ‘sadistic bloodlust’. He even compares foxhunting to ‘wife-beating and burning witches’.

Curious about his own motivation, I had noted that in the past May had referred obliquely to ‘something in his childhood’ that had influenced him.

What was it? He seemed uncomfortable. Had he ever killed an animal or been cruel to one?

May, 68 next Sunday, takes a deep sigh before confessing: ‘Yes, though I will expose myself to ridicule if I say how.’

Brian May with his mother
Trauma: Brian picture with his mother at around the time he attacked a bumble bee with a Flit gun as a boy

He has accused Cameron of a ‘dishonest’ attempt to bring back hunting by the back door. How about being honest himself? And so it all poured out. It started when he was frightened by a bumble bee at his home in the leafy suburbs of South-West London when he was a boy in the 1950s – and he took deadly revenge. Bloodlust if you like.
His ‘weapon’ was his mother’s ‘pump-action Flit gun’ insect repellent to kill flies in the kitchen. He makes it sound like a Kalashnikov.

‘A bumble bee got into the house and seemed to be following me around and I got scared,’ he says.

‘I got the Flit gun and pumped it at the bee. It fell down, started buzzing horribly and whizzed round and round for half an hour before it died. I found it horrific and thought, “Why did I do that?” I felt very sad that I had unnecessarily destroyed a life.’

The sensitive young May was also disturbed by spraying a blackfly-infested plant in his family’s garden. ‘The next morning the plant was covered in this black glue,’ he says. ‘I had killed ladybirds and everything, not just blackfly.’ His sense of guilt is still palpable.

Then there was his mother and father’s well-intentioned fib to him when the family’s pet cat, Mittens, was run over by a car.

Brian and Freddie
May (right) says the band’s singer Freddie Mercury (left) would tease him when they
were on tour: ‘Oh Brian, I suppose you’re busy rescuing bloody flies in your hotel room again'

‘They didn’t think I was up to being told the truth and said it had wandered off and would be back. Eventually, I worked it out.’ May became a vegetarian after learning that the roast lamb dinner his mum ‘forced him to eat’ was ‘one of those white, fluffy things that runs around the fields’.

I can’t help wondering how far he would take his views. For example, if a fly walked across his biscuit plate right now, would he kill it? He rolls his eyes and says doubtless I will challenge him to say he wouldn’t even kill the friendless mosquito. Actually, I hadn’t even thought about mosquitoes.

‘Maybe if a tiger was coming towards me and was about to eat me I would kill the tiger. But you aren’t threatened by a fly, moth, cockroach, fox or badger,’ he says.

The guitarist has no truck with the ‘Oh My God there’s a dirty creature in my house’ attitude towards domestic pests – including rats.

‘Rats are no problem if there’s no humans around.’

The way to save rats is to get rid of the human race?

‘You’re pushing me into a corner,’ May responds. ‘Most of the problems in the world are because there are too many of us. Humans aren’t the only species on the planet – and not necessarily the most important.’

Never mind hunting foxes: May says if some animal-rights fanatics had their way, then horse-riding itself would be banned as ‘cruel.’ He says they have a point.

‘Horses did not evolve to be our slaves,’ the star continues. ‘They were meant to be running across the plains.’

Talking of wild horses, May believes we could learn from native American Indians. When they came across rough terrain, they would make moccasins, then discard them when the path smoothed out, whereas we just put concrete roads everywhere.

Brian May and badger protesters
He says he ‘hates’ David Cameron’s stance on foxhunting, talks of a ‘fox Armageddon’, and calls his opponents ‘a bunch
of lying b******s’ who pursue the ‘uniquely cruel’ sport out of ‘sadistic bloodlust’. He even compares foxhunting
to ‘wife-beating and burning witches’.

He claims he turned to political campaigning after realising that he could not change the world through music. I confess I was not aware of a Dylan-esque political agenda in Queen’s songs. Is Fat Bottomed Girls a political statement, I wonder?

‘I’m not talking about that,’ he snaps.

But he did a few years ago, reportedly saying it was about Mercury’s fondness for women – and men – with big bottoms.

May is resigned to being a ‘hate figure’ with foxhunting supporters – ‘I wake up every morning knowing people are plotting against me’ – and admits it is a strain.

His second wife, actress Anita Dobson, 66 – most famous for her role as Queen Vic owner Angie in the BBC soap EastEnders – loyally supports him ‘but she doesn’t find it easy because it brings out a lot of tension in me’.

May concedes he is obsessive. ‘I can’t do things by halves,’ he says. ‘I know it is a kind of sickness. Maybe I need curing.’

That picture ?  Well, here it is.  Sorry.  It’s very upsetting, and I felt like I wanted to give you choice of whether to see it or not.  To be honest, I myself often refuse to look at some of the pictures of atrocities I get sent in E-mails, of people persecuting foxes and badgers.  But in this case I think the point needs to be made and the people need to know.

Awful fox picture

THIS is what ‘flushing out’ a fox often looks like. No - it’s not an unusual, exceptional occurrence.  The LACS has thousands of pictures just as upsetting as this, from 'Terrier Work', which is of course an integral part of the Fox Hunting community.  These people are actually legally able to ‘dig out’ these poor creatures and shoot them. Bad enough.  What is NOT legal is torturing them and then putting them in bags or cages or dustbins in a pitiful state for later release in front of a pack of hounds. But this is what regularly happens. Because a certain kind of human being enjoys this obscenity.

This particularly hideous pic was tweeted, I understand, by a terrier man, boasting about the pleasure they’d had torturing this beautiful (female) animal.  As you can see, the fox is being help by the ears while a hound is tearing the skin and flesh off its front legs.  The hound is being held in place by another man.  They chillingly call it 'de-socking'.  It’s hard to imagine behaviour more depraved than this.

Yet, in trying to sneak a ‘relaxation’ of the Hunting Act past us all, the Government is encouraging and actually endorsing despicable behaviour like this.  Cameron’s Statutory Instrument, they tell us, is to make it easier to ‘flush out’ a fox.  Of course it’s quite absurd to imagine that a whole pack of hounds is needed to assist this kind of murderous operation.  The real reason for the Pro-Hunt lobby to have forced this issue is of course so they can go back to charging around the countryside with full packs of hounds, and then the dogs ‘accidentally’ picking up the scent of fox, and … tally-ho.  To suggest that this very unworthy Statutory Instrument is about ‘wildlife management’ is a blatant lie and an outrage.

It’s an absolute necessity for those of us who care about decency and humane treatment of all creatures to stand up and speak our mind right now.  And we all need to clearly tell our MPs how we expect them to behave on Wednesday, and how they must reject this attempt to hurl us back into the barbaric past.

ISSUING URGENT CALL FOR ACTION AGAINST "UNWORTHY SI"
Direct link

PRESS STATEMENT:

Animal Campaigner Queen's Brian May issues urgent call for action against "unworthy SI"

Responding to the announcement made yesterday that MPs are to be given a free vote on relaxing the ban on fox hunting next Thursday through a statutory instrument to amend the Hunting Act, animal campaigner and Save Me Trust founder, Queen’s Brian May today responded, calling for action to “save our foxes from the return of sadistic sports”.

May writes:

An URGENT call for action against an unworthy SI.

A call to save our foxes from the return of sadistic sports.

It seems we are now approaching the showdown - the moment that has been threatening British wildlife for ten years now - a return to the ugly scenario of unfettered thugs roaming the English countryside with packs of dogs, ready to tear innocent wild animals apart limb from limb while still alive, in the name of sport.

In the 2010 election, David Cameron’s small clique of ruling ministers and pro-hunt MPs were helped into office by an organisation called Vote OK … spawned by the Countryside Alliance to agitate for the return of the blood sports which were banned in the 2004 Hunting Act. Thus an unholy and inappropriate liaison was formed, which is now threatening to deprive the British public of its will to make Britain a humane place for animals.

It’s now clear that the Government, perceiving that Cameron’s long-promised "free vote on repeal of the Hunting Act” is now unlikely to go their way, is attempting to disable the Hunting Act through dishonest and unworthy use of an Statutory Instrument, to allow packs of dogs to roam again alongside bloodthirsty thugs on horses and four-wheelers in the Countryside. It’s an appallingly shabby way of giving the animal-abusers what they want. And it’s also clear that the Countryside Alliance have been complicit in this connivance with the Government in setting up this strategy, a wholly undemocratic abuse of influence.

The Government is to try to force this through next Wednesday in the Commons, when the SI will be put to the vote after a paltry 90 minute debate. If the attempt succeeds, it will be put before the House of Lords in the Autumn.

We must make no mistake here. This underhanded scheme is being sold to MPs as simply a minor amendment to the Act, to bring it into line with the Scottish Wild Mammals Act of 2002.

In fact, this truly is Armageddon for foxes, and those who fight cruelty to animals. On the Government’s own website we learn “Statutory Instruments are used to provide the necessary detail that would be too complex to include in the Act itself”. It’s blindingly obvious that changing the number of dogs allowed in a ‘Pest Control’ operation is NOT too complex to have been included in the Act itself. So from the beginning, this is an unworthy and dishonest use of an SI, and should be rejected by all MPs on this basis alone.

But much more dishonest is the assertion that “this will make it possible for Farmers to control pests in a more humane way”. This is an outrageous falsehood. Firstly it embodies the callous and laughable implication that anyone backing this SI actually cares about humane treatment of animals. Secondly it assumes that foxes actually need controlling – demonstrably untrue since the Hunts are known to breed foxes for their vile sport. Thirdly, it is not farmers who will be using this ‘control’ mechanism – it is the Huntsmen, who torture these magnificent animals for pleasure. Fourthly, can we imagine a whole pack of dogs attacking a family of foxes in their home ? Can we imagine how having a whole pack rather than just two of them can actually make the kill more humane ? This is the most despicable nonsense imaginable.

What can we do ? It’s not too late to E-mail your MP and tell him in no uncertain terms that you expect him or her, regardless of which political party he belongs to, to vote against this SI skulduggery – to vote against the return of unchecked abuse of animals in the Countryside. For more information please visit our Save-Me website.

We, on behalf of the British electorate, and in the name of Common Decency, call on all MPs of all parties to throw this transparently unworthy SI out of the window in the vote on Wednesday.

URGENT !  A CALL TO ARMS
Direct link

Skulduggery in the House of Commons ?

The Spectator has today published an article [Revealed: David Cameron's plan to bring back fox hunting] admitting that the Government, recognising they cannot win the “Free Vote on Hunting” that David Cameron promised, has given up on it, and is about to try to bring back legalised Fox Hunting through the back door.

How incredible, when the country is still massively in debt, when there is still rising poverty in the UK, that our Government wants to prioritise bringing back blood sports.

Word is that a ‘1922 Committee’ is to be convened probably this week to bring in a Statutory Instrument (SI), to increase the number of hounds that can be used in a so-called ‘pest control’ operation.  Effectively this will completely smash the protection that the Hunting Act at present affords to foxes to prevent suffering.

We need to make sure all decent people, and especially all decent MPs, understand what is at stake here.

The Spectator

The Spectator article has two halves.  The first tells us that the Government is now no longer confident that it can win a free vote on repeal of the Hunting Act, so it will attempt to legalise this barbaric behaviour by other means.  The second half is a shamefully biased bit of propaganda telling us that such a move would benefit us all … and even benefit foxes, if they have mange !! Absurd and disgusting talk, and it seems likely that the Spectator has been fed this whole story to try to soften up the public – for the shameful act of sabotage to a law, which they are this morning saying is imminent.

The intent of the proposed SI is to increase the number of dogs that English hunters can use to ‘flush out’ a fox to be shot, in the loophole situation in which at present just two dogs can be used, if the operation is deemed to be about ‘pest control’. So the blood hunts will be able to allow their full pack of hounds to run amuck, just like the old days.  Who would be able to tell if they were ‘controlling’ a fox or just pursuing their old vile pleasure ?

Effectively this is repeal of the Hunting Act under a different name.  The so-called ‘Trail Hunts’ (of which many present government ministers have been members in the past) have all along insisted on using real fox urine to lay trails, so that the dogs can follow a real fox ‘accidentally’ and rip it to pieces, while the hunters rub their hands with glee.  This dishonesty has been going on ever since 2004 as a way of getting away with breaking the law.  There is another kind of hunting – Drag Hunting – which has been going on for over 150 years.  Drag Hunts use an artificial scent, so the dogs will never follow an animal, and there is no cruelty involved.  Country folk have been enjoying this tradition for a long time, knowing they were not guilty of any cruelty, and long may they continue.  On the other hand, the ‘Trail Hunters’ are all about causing suffering for pleasure, and are clinging on desperately to their right to inflict pain.

If this SI measure is to be used to bring back legalised abuse of foxes, it means the Government have decided that the goodwill of the Countryside Alliance is more important to them than the will of the British Public.  Historically, Statutory Instruments have only been used to make a minor modification to a law in a non-controversial way.  The idea that this device could be used to circumvent the will of the majority of the English people is actually an outrage, and will be viewed by all decent folks as disgraceful conduct by any government, and an abuse of Parliamentary procedures.

Whether or not the Spectator article is true, this is the time we must rally to rescue our wild animals – and, on the way, rescue our own Common Decency.

It’s time to write to your MP – not just to say ‘vote against repeal of the Hunting Act’– because this vote may now never happen.

What we need to write and say is … “I, as one of your constituents, demand that you, as our MP, vote against any attempt to bring back blood sports by any means, including subterfuge.  Whether the attack on the Hunting Act is brought by fair means or foul, it must be resisted – or Britain will be heading straight back into the barbaric Dark Ages.”  Well, use your own words !

This is vital.  All animal welfare legislation over the past 150 years is now called into question.  We can either keep going forward and protecting animals against cruelty, or we can go back to licensing the sadistic few to carry on torturing foxes, hares, stags, badgers …

Talk to the FBI.  In giving assent to animal cruelty, we are effectively giving consent to the abuse of humans too. The FBI’s files on animal abusers are the first place they look when they’re searching for a child abuser.  The hunting of defenceless animals is a totem – a symbol of the need of a certain kind of human to exert their power, and enjoy the feeling of cruelty.

Never be fooled by the ridiculous claim that this is about ‘control of a pest’ – about ‘Vermin’.  It’s now absolutely established that the fox hunts BREED foxes for their vile sport … this blasts all  these claims out of the water.  Foxes were introduced to the Isle of Wight in the 1930s purely for sport.  Are they going to tell us hunting there is necessary for ‘pest control’ ? And only last week we saw the pictures of 16 tiny fox cubs pitifully being held in a a barn, and being fed by accessories to the local Hunt.  It’s been well known for years this goes on, the poor creatures being held in bags or dustbins to be tipped out in a pitiful state to be pursued by the pack.   The claim that any vicious ‘sport’ is justified by ‘culture’ – or ‘tradition’ – is also entirely specious.  This line of reasoning can be used – and HAS been used, to justify anything from bear baiting and horse beating to slavery, and to Female Genital Mutilation.  NO !  Tradition cannot be used as a justification for despicable behaviour.

WRITE NOW to your MP … tell him or her you will not stand for skulduggery which will hurl us back into the Stone Age.

PLANET PLUTO BECKONS !
Direct link

Yes, I still call it a planet ! Because nobody’s really satisfied me with a good enough reason to change my feelings about this. When I was very young - probably 7 or 8 years old - my Dad taught me the sequence of planets in order from the Sun outwards :

Mercury-Venus-Earth-Mars-Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus-Neptune-Pluto !

And it still rings in my head as strongly as the songs that captured my thoughts in those magical days – Maybe Baby, Oh Boy, That’ll Be The Day, Lucille, Jailhouse Rock …

So for me, a spacecraft arriving at this farthest-flung outpost of the Sun’s family of captive rocks – the first time EVER mankind has achieved this – is something beyond thrilling. I may have the chance to sit with the fathers of this amazing craft, named New Horizons, in 10 days time, as it passes close by this enigmatic, bitterly cold world.

I always thought of it as ‘icy’, so in my mind, it was white or grey and shiny. But the pictures the New Horizons craft has already sent us, as it approaches the rendezvous, tell us that Pluto is actually a RED planet - a counterpart to Mars in its appearance, but for different reasons. It’s highly likely that when we see those first EVER images of Pluto viewed from only a few thousand miles away next week, we’ll see something completely unpredicted.

Meanwhile a nice animation has been created of the spinning planet by a scientist called Bjorn Jonsson - compiled from the best currently available data (mainly from New Horizons).

It’s a fascination of mine to create stereo images out of rotation movies. And in this I have been very much assisted and enabled by my pal Claudia Manzoni. Here are some stereos derived from the Jonsson model.

I think it’s specially appropriate to share these stereos right now - because very soon we will likely have images which will make these redundant for ever.

So please dust your OWLS off (or get ready to 'Free-View') and … ENJOY !

This first stereo shows those four dark spots in a line abreast which have made a deep impression on observers in recent days.

Pluto 01

And this is a composite of four different aspects of the planet (OK – Dwarf Planet!) in quadrature.

Pluto 02

The red dot is there to help us align the eyes correctly to see the four spheres in 3-D. Relax the eyes, allow the two red dots to drift together and ‘fuse’ into one, and you will see all around it the four solid views of Pluto.

It’s hard to be sure at this time whether we are looking at a hard surface here, or the tops of clouds, or a combination of both, but I’m sure all will be revealed on 14th - 15th July.

Watch this space. As with the Rosetta mission, the improvement in quality that’s about to happen is expected to be DRAMATIC!!!
