STAR WARS

[Brian was asked if Freddie didn't like Star Wars, or was this just for sake of the lyrics of 'Bicycle Race' - see LETTERS]

Well, it's a fair question, I guess. But did you ever read 'MobyDick' ? I always remember the first words were "Call me Ishmael". But of course Herman Melville wasn't Ishmael. As with a novel, just because a song is written in the first person doesn't mean it's in any way autobiographical. As I remember, Freddie liked Star Wars a lot, and he actually wasn't very keen on riding his bicycle (if he even had one!) - he preferred being driven in a Rolls Royce! But he created a character in the song, and this character can say what he wants, and he can ride his bicycle where he likes !

A REMINDER ABOUT THE LSC WEBSITE !

Just wanted to remind you that very often, if I have 3-D versions of photos that I put up on Bri's Soapbox, they land up on our London Stereoscopic Company site ... in the Modern Stereos section ...

Davey the adorable cub is up there now, and I'm going to try to update more often in future.

hwww.londonstereo.com/modern_stereos_brianmay.html#davey

and once you're there you might get tempted to go back into the other areas of the site ... the classic stereos ... of T. R. Williams and others, plus some Queen stereos etc.

All the very best

DAVEY THE FOX CUB RULES !

Dear Folks ...

I'm back off tour, and to be honest, that transition is not easy. I have lost some days ...

But coming back to the wildlife rescue is a joy. I have missed some of these little guys' childhood ... but here's Davey (Cameron) at 4 months ... looking so cute, and very brave and playful ...

His brothers and sisters are more shy - I'll show you them later ... Kate, Caroline ... Nick ...

But Davey is full of beans and ... well, how adorable? He's tiny, and all paws and ears, but already a great tunneller.

Davey The Fox

and in OWL stereo ... (try it!)

Davey The Fox in stereo

Anne has brought into care literally hundreds of animals this year ... hedgehogs, blue tits, owls, robins, about 20 fox cubs ... and two fauns ... today just a week old, but they can already stand! Their mother gave birth to them after being hit on the road; she died, but they live on, now getting strong, in readiness for their second chance in the wild.

Bri and Fawn

They are a great distraction from the depression of coming off tour ! How can you be sad when there are such precious creatures in the world?

Til very soon!

cheers

RED SPECIAL ON YOU AND I ?

[Elizabeth Gardner asked if Red Special used on Lady GaGa track "You and I" - see LETTERS]

I did use the Red Special - yes. Thanks for the comments, Elizabeth. You are very perceptive !! Glad you like it.

The solo you hear is actually a very cut-down version of what I played. Maybe one day they will release the long version.

But it's not my call.

RECENT EVENTS

I have to admit that, while immersed in my current tour of the UK, the nasty, insidious "Red Tape" affair nearly slipped by me unnoticed. But it needs attention from us all precisely because the 'Con-Dem' government have so cleverly concealed this scheme to quash current existing legislation which protects the environment and our wild animals.

---

THERE IS A PETITION CURRENTLY being run by 38 Degrees ... to STOP the dilution of these precious laws.

STOP THE GOVERNMENT SCRAPPING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION LAWS,
BY LABELLING THEM AS 'RED TAPE'

It seems almost incredible, but the Government, quite quietly, is trying to scrap laws that protect the environment, and our wild animals, by labelling them as 'Red Tape', that they propose to scrap. It's a back-door way of pursuing their policy of giving the farming business complete control of the countryside, and stripping away any voice that speaks for the rights of wild animals, or Nature in its free state. The logo of the Conservative party - a Green Tree - is the ultimate irony. It's time that people realised that this government represents cruelty and a callous disregard for Nature.

We have an opportunity to comment on the 'Red Tape' proposals directly. Make your feelings known on their site here ...

Please sign here ...

And please spread the word ... that the very existence of our wild life is under threat from this Coalition government.

And here is the disclaimer about alleged intimidation by animal rights extremists.

In view of the recent allegations that TV presenter Adam Henson and his family have been threatened by 'activists',

www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/8502577/Adam-Henson-receives-death-threats-over-badger-cull.html

SAVE-ME would like to make the following clear statement.

"We are appalled to read Adam Henson's claim that he and his family have been threatened by extremists, because of his perceived views on the culling of badgers.

We at Save-Me believe that the killing of badgers, or any other wild animal, in an attempt to eradicate disease endemic to farming, is immoral, scientifically unsound, and tragically misguided. We are committed to fighting violence towards animals, by educating, raising public awareness, and by every decent and lawful means possible.

But we want to make it absolutely clear that we deplore the use of any kind of intimidation or violence towards those people who may in the future be lawfully engaged in a cull; in fact, as an entirely peaceful campaign, we remain totally dissociated from anyone who feels that violence or personal threats against humans are ever justified."

Brian May

Of course, on the other side, all of us who campaign against cruelty to wild animals are frequently threatened. The worst of the intimidation via our facebook page last Autumn was put in the hands of the police. It is not surprising to find that those who advocate violence to animals will tend to be violent to humans too - the correlation has been proven statistically. But, though there is a natural tendency for animal welfare workers to spring to the defence of animals who are being abused by any means, we who continue the fight against cruelty must guard carefully against crossing the border into inappropriate behaviour towards human beings. It is peace we need, in the end, after all.

SITTING BULL

I am urging people to sign the Independent's petition today, to end the use of animals in circuses. It's a sad day when the Government's own DEFRA department advocates an action of compassion, and the Prime Minister himself blocks it.

http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/circusanimals

"Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children"
(Sitting Bull)

And if you are in Wales, and care about animals, I'm sure you are smiling at the resurgence of the Labour Party in this week's election. PLEASE urge them, with all your persuasive power, to live up to their promise to quash the order for the destruction of Badgers in Pembrokeshire.

Love

END ANIMAL CIRCUSES NOW !!!!

Hi Folks

I have posted this alert to the Independent's petition on our old Facebook page. Let's END the shameful use of wild animals in circuses. - Bri

This is a no-brainer, of course .. and another clear indication that we have a government that has no regard for animal welfare whatsoever. I believe that this is one moment when ALL the animal-aware organisiations can combine their efforts and win this one. We can at least highlight the fact that we have the wrong kind of leadership right now. And perhaps we can even get this bad decision reversed.

This is a moment when we can all make a significant difference to the future of animals in the UK. The climate of public opinion is overwhelmingly in favour of consigning the practice of using wild animals in circuses forever to the past. But, according to reports in the Independent, in spite of the fact that the Government's own DEFRA department has recommended that a ban is brought into force, The Prime Minister has personally blocked its implementation in the last few days.

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/no-10-blocks-plan-to-ban-wild-animals-performing-in-circuses-2279800.html

The Independent, backed by all concerned animal campaigns, including Virginia McKenna's Born Free, has mounted a petition to persuade Number 10 Downing Street that they need to listen to us - and make the required move towards ending this abuse of animals, once and for all. Please take a moment to sign this one.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION - it's QUICK AND EASY

http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/circusanimals

THANKS - Bri

Here is a message from Will Travers of the Born Free Foundation:

"It's not often that a political decision is made that seems certain to disappoint almost everyone but, given the overwhelming level of public support for an end to the exploitation of wild animals in circuses, it's no exaggeration to say that news that No 10 may have deliberately sabotaged the long-awaited plans for a ban will leave the vast majority of the British public rightly outraged (report, 6 May).

Concerns for the welfare of animals in circuses have been voiced publicly and in Parliament for decades. Finally, when the Animal Welfare Act became a reality in 2007, it seemed that, at last, there was a prospect of real closure on this troubling issue – indeed that's what ministers have promised. But what have we got? Hot air and empty promises.

And throughout all the years of talk, wild animals continued to be subjected to wasted lives in travelling circuses – shunted from pillar to post, living in temporary accommodation, trained using undisclosed methods, and, as evidenced most recently by the case of Anne the elephant, subjected to brutal and prolonged abuse.

Now, instead of listening to the people, it seems that as a result of the personal intervention of the Prime Minister's office – over-ruling advice from Defra – this wholly unacceptable, deeply unpopular and exploitative use of wild animals is set to continue.

No. In the grand scheme of things, ending the use of wild animals in circuses isn't the most pressing political priority. It won't change the world – but it will change the world for each and every wild animal in a circus by replacing compulsion, coercion and cruelty with compassion. I urge everyone to take action by signing The Independent's petition."

JUST ONE MORE RALLYING CRY
"YES TO AV"

If you hope for a better Britain, PLEASE go out and vote YES to the new voting system ... AV ...

.... even though the Old Money and Power have managed to make the arguments for staying in the Dark Ages almost plausible.

Do NOT let them pull the wool over your eyes ... they have spent millions on glossy publicity and spin - but this is exactly WHY we need to take away the smug power of these people who wield power without any real majority. Yes, the Old Conservatives are scared ... and this is enough to tell you how you need to vote. Enough. This country needs CHANGE ... a renewal ... a refresh.

And progress towards a world in which your vote - your opinion - will actually COUNT.

ROCK OF AGES - WELCOME TO OUR WORLD !

We're wishing Rock of Ages luck in the West End.

The show's development in the USA has involved many of our WWRY people - including some of our great performers, and the show includes a few nods to WWRY in the way it involves the audience. I'm all for it ... I saw it in New York and had a great time. Yes, it's been attacked for being trashy, but these people miss the point, It's deliberately cheesy ... (it makes Ben's WWRY script look like Hamlet at times !) ... but all the better for it. It's unashamedly a fun night out. And the songs are all great AOR Rock from the 80's ... Journey, Foreigner, Styx, REO Speedwagon. For our generation, it's a romp, and of course Glee has brought this material to a whole new generation, so teens and 20 year-olds should get it too.

Moreover, I'm happy to say that our great friend and former WWRY MD Elliott Ware has been appointed musical director for the London production.

I will be there !

I should add, also, of course, that, at the heart of ROA is an even deeper link ... the music supervisor/arranger/orchestrator of ROA is also a WWRY veteran - he's Ethan Popp, who waved the baton in our German premiere for WWRY in Cologne. The show is auditioning for talent right now, so it should help to get some more starving muso's off the streets! Go!

Cheers
