I was trying to write up the whole tree-planting day in Bere Regis. But I think for once I can just let the pictures talk.

There's an awful lot that these pictures don't show (including the digging !) - especially the great singing the children did .. but you can see that here, I think !

Again … big thanks !

DR MAY'S KNEE
Direct link

Thanks for asking about Dr May's knee. Well, as you can see, at 7 weeks it's not holding me back any more. Next day is a another story !

So I declare knee replacement to be a very good thing - but not to be undertaken until you are SURE you can't go on as you are.

PLANTING THE FIRST NEW TREES IN BERE REGIS
Direct link

It was truly one of the most memorable and different days of my life. We planted the first trees in my project to restore some ancient woodland, with the intention of creating a safe habitat for animals and people to live in harmony. Ambitious ? Yes, and it's a steep learning curve for me. And I'm sure I will make mistakes along the way. But I have great advisors, experienced woodland managers, and the participation and enthusiasm of the entire population of the Bere Regis area. It's all I dreamed of, for the last 10 years or so, and lot more besides. But I didn't realise it would spark off the imagination of kids and parents and grandparents alike.

I think we have a great chance of creating a whole new way of managing woodlands for our grandchildren to enjoy. A way based on compassion, respect for all life, and common sense. Tilhill, my woodland management people, are completely versed in the all the traditional ways of management - but they are are also open to re-examining every 'traditional' action in the light of what is now possible, and without the constraint of having to make it turn in a profit. We don't want it to be a 'commercial' success. The only aim is to create and protect. And learn all over again how to ENJOY the abundant life around us.

I don't doubt that the 'Dark Side' will find some way to ridicule and denigrate the project, and call me an amateur. Well, so be it. I have come to expect this now - because I'm a thorn in the side of those who are clinging to the Old Ways - in which animals are just objects to be used at will. But they will have a whole enlightened community here to answer to.

I hope this will inspire restoration of forest environments everywhere. It's certainly already a lot of fun !

I'll try to write up the planting day tomorrow, with some pictures … Can't wait to go again !

Cheers

Bri

My sincere thanks to all the good folks of Bere Regis, Shitterton and Save-Me who made it great day.

It might not look that much for a day's toil, but … from little acorns … big futures can grow.

2:30pm
Meeting and Welcome
All participants and press to make their way to Shitterton Wood Plot Field - adjacent to the A35 slip road heading west (BH20 7HU). The Save Me team and Dr May will welcome everyone and explain the ethos and objectives for the new woodlands and how the scheme will develop.

3:20pm
The Woodland Song
Brian to introduce the Woodland Song. Performed by the school choir and led by Linda Lamon, this new piece of work will celebrate the event in music and lyrics.

3:30pm
Move to Horse Close Plots for Brian’s Tree planting
Dr May to plant the very first tree in May’s Wood.

Community Planting
Julian Ohlson of UPM Tilhill to explain about and demonstrate how to plant the young oaks and the need for tree shelters, how they work and how to fit them as part of the tree planting process.

Tree planting continues as and when people arrive for as many as five trees each across the first field.

4:10pm
Wildlife Rocks Talk
The Save Me team will give a 40-minute talk about some of the amazing wildlife that surround us and some of the unusual roles that it performs to maintain the natural balance. You will meet the people from Save Me and Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue who care and rehabilitate wildlife and return them to the wild where they belong.

Finish 5pm

We have a wonderful possibility to make an environment which our children and grandchildren will grow up and enjoy in harmony with the animals around hem. We look forward to seeing you there and hope you will join in and help us to create a woodland.

Yours faithfully
Brian May
