FUTURE OF FARTHINGS
Direct link

Well, the truth is that a reporter approached me at a private reception for the cast and me at Spamalot, and started asking questions about Patrick Moore, as soon as I'd come off stage.

I told him that we had had an exciting offer from the Science Museum to create a exhibit devoted to Patrick's life and work, and we would be trying to make that happen. The reporter asked if there were plans for Farthings and I said that no plans had been agreed yet.

That was it !

At this point, I smelled a rat - since the man was clearly not there to talk about Spamalot.

So the conversation came to an end. From that, he went away and wrote this foul piece, entitled "Brian May ditches plans for shrine, .. etc.".

It's almost unbelievable that this - the worst kind of journalism - actually still goes on.

We, the executors of Patrick's estate, are continuing in our quest to sort out Patrick's legacy as best we can.

When all the plans are made, we'll make a statement. Until then, it's essentially a private discussion.

FROM VEGAS
Direct link

Excellent first day rehearsing in Las Vegas with the stupendous voice of Adam Lambert. Wow. Somehow the timing feels good. Feeling a touch nostalgic looking out at 'Paris', former home of WWRY USA. Las Vegas still feels a bit like home.

Vegas View over to Paris Hotel

Truly sickened to see photo of murdered badger back home. Music is recharging me. I needed a break. But, by Heaven, I will be back.

A million miles from the squalid badger massacre - I had forgotten the feeling of the warm sun on the body.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SONGS WITH ADAM
Direct link

Hi folks

I've just been looking through the very thoughtful song suggestions that you all sent in about our imminent set with Adam Lambert in Las Vegas.

I enjoyed that quick flutter on Twitter when I first brought up the subject, and I know many of you contributed to that too. Its quite exhilarating when hundreds of messages start piling in ! But this is something a little different, and reminds me that the old Soapbox is still best ! I can see that so much thought and wisdom has gone into your messages, and I just wanted to say thank you. Wish I could reply to them all individually, but maybe Jen can paste them up somewhere, because they bring up interesting views of the Queen ouvre. And it all goes in ! I think I've learned a lot from reading them. I suppose it all reminds me how enormous the possibilities are with respect to Queen material. Of course these days, without Freddie (and essentially without John), it has been hard to realise that potential in a format which really works, and has the capacity to endure. I also always question whether we can call it Queen ! But it's hard to figure what we'd call it otherwise !

We'll be having a good old think in the next few days, and I also know that, once we're all in the rehearsal room kicking ideas around, things will happen.

Remember … What happens in Vegas never stays in Vegas. Oh .. did I get that wrong ?

I'm packing.

Polish Arena

Here's Queen & Adam last time out. Some little gig we did some place !

BE PREPARED FOR VITRIOLIC PRESS ATTACK
Direct link

Be prepared for another vitriolic Press attack in the next day or so, again aimed at destroying the RSPCA's powers to do their job. I am aghast that we let the Government spend OUR money pointlessly killing badgers, and allow them to keep all observers away. Scandalous.

How can there be any trust in a Government that is hiding so much ?

EMILY'S WEDDING
Direct link

Ah ! That's my lovely baby daughter getting married - last week.

It was a big wedding … with a lavish reception at the Natural History Museum. Eek. We kept it very private, at the time.

But I see things are leaking out now. I guess that's OK, now that the happy couple are away on honeymoon, swimming with Turtles !

This was our approach to the church (late, of course!) - Emily looking a picture, and me trying to keep the 'train' out of the dirt.

Emily May and Brian - Wedding

I was the proud father of the bride, and, just 3 weeks after the surgery on my leg, DID manage to walk her down the aisle without a stick !

GENOCIDE - OR MASSACRE ? OR JUST ATTEMPTED CHARACTER ASSASSINATION ?
Direct link

A quick note about that 'complaint' in The Daily Telegraph today (11 Sept), about me (apparently) using the word 'Genocide' in relation to animals rather than people.

The Times 11 September 2013Opposite: The Daily Telegraph 11 September 2013

Firstly, my sincere apologies, of course, to anyone who felt upset by this. It would never be my intention in any way to slight the Jewish community.

So many of my most loved and respected friends are Jews, and in any case, for people like us who have seen all corners of the world, racial slurs are just out of the question.

So what's this about ? Well, I actually don't remember using the word 'genocide' last Friday, but it's possible, since I did probably 20 interviews that day, all off the cuff, and in the end you tend to lose track. The word I prefer to use about the badger cull is 'massacre' … because really the word 'cull' is enormously euphemistic. One of the most distasteful things about this present government-licensed killing in the countryside is that it's all being done in secret, as if the Government and the NFU really were afraid of the pubic seeing the full horror of what is happening. So in our messages, those of us who are close to this situation try to use words which paint a true picture.

Now, I had a look at dictionary definitions of the word, and really it's a relatively modern word, and it has more often than not been used about human animals, rather than other animals. But a quick look at its derivation shows that really it means the 'killing of a genus' - something close to a species, so it's not a very big flight of fancy to apply it to animals. Genocide is a generic term, and has been used to describe at least 5 major acts of horrific violence to one race of people. But a quick look at the Google results for 'Genocide of animals' gives hundreds of results, showing that I am far from the first to use the word in connection with violence to non-human animals.

It has to be understood that we who are campaigning for decent treatment of animals regard this journey as an extension of the efforts of every decent citizen to ensure decent treatments for all races of humans. There is not the slightest hint of disrespect for the atrocities that men have suffered at the hands of men. But we believe, in a non-anthropocentric way, that EVERY animal has an equal right to a decent life and a decent death. So, as time goes on, you will see, more and more, that campaigners for animal welfare will apply the same epithets to acts of violence to ALL creatures. The word 'murder' is now often used for a premeditated act of killing an animal for no good reason, and it seems to me that the word 'genocide', though not one of my favourites, will probably be regarded as legitimate if the Government succeeds in wiping out badgers, the ancient inhabitants of this land, in some areas of the UK, which it very much seems they intend to at the moment. We have it on good authority that there are NO checks on the percentage of slaughter in any one sett, until the end of the 6-week 'pilot' scheme. When you are offering money per kill, to men who love to kill anyway, how can there be any brake applied ? And how can it possibly be humane ?

So, again, my apologies to anyone who felt I was trivialising their family's suffering. I certainly intended nothing of the kind. I think if I had used the word 'holocaust', it would be something rather different.

My feeling is that, although there are apparently genuine comments here from religious leaders, this story has been 'manufactured', as part of the continuing effort by the pro-cull lobby, to try to discredit me, smear me, because they desperately wish I would shut up - stop telling the truth. I can't imagine that Rabbis are glued to their TV sets, analysing the words that I speak. I imagine that it's more in the line of a reporter ringing up and saying, "Hello - we're doing a story on Brian May using inappropriate words which might upset Jews - would you like to comment ?" That's the reality of so many of these attempts to attract attention in the Press. Expect to see more attempts at character assassination in the coming months … not just against me, but against anyone who stands up for wild animals … including of course the RSPCA, and also, almost laughably, against the animals themselves. It's all spin. Spin, spin, spin. Wild animals are 'vermin', right ?

I've already spoken to some of my Jewish friends about The Daily Telegraph story, and you might be hearing from one of them !

Meanwhile, words are our only weapon in our David-versus-Goliath fight against the Monolith of the NFU, the Countryside Alliance and the Government. We will all be using words to the best of our ability - literally, figuratively, pejoratively, educationally. And in the end, the public will rise up behind us, to stop this atrocity being committed against our innocent, defenceless and irreplaceable wild animals.

Cheers !

A QUICK QUEEN/LAMBERT POLL ON TWITTER

Direct link

I just did a quick ask on Twitter as to which songs people would like to see ADAM sing with us next week in Las Vegas.

Interesting. Of course this is possibly a bit skewed by the fact that it's more my followers, but loads of Adam followers and Roger fanatics seem to have jumped in.

The results - from about 600 tweets, are quite suprising.

Way out in front "Who Wants to Live Forever" at about 20% of the votes. They all loved how Adam did it last time.

Then "The Show Must Go On" - about 10% of the total votes. Again, they've seen it on TV with Adam crushing it ...

Then "Killer Queen", " Another One Bites the Dust", "We Are the Champions", "Under Pressure", all at about 6%.

Then "Dragon Attack", "Somebody to Love", "I Want to Break Free", "Radio Gaga", "We Will Rock You", "I Want It All", "Fat Bottom Girls".

It's interesting to notice the songs that aren't in there in the top 10 - Crazy Little Thing, You're My Best Friend, BO RAP ? !!!! - but the question was "What would you like to see ADAM sing ?" - not "What's your favourite Queen song?". And this is fans and followers, not the greater TV-Watching, Radio-listening public. Their ideas might be different.

And of course, this is what people THINK they'd like. They might in the event love something completely different, if we make a great job of it !!

Notably, quite a few people wanted to see David Bowie perform with us, and about the same number asked for us to perform an Adam song too.

----

I'll be talking with Roger and Adam over the next few days.
Please feel free, all you great Soapbox readers, to make suggestions.
I might not be able to reply to them all,
but I promise I'll see 'em !

Cheers
