IMPORTANT QUESTION ABOUT "STARMUS"

Betina Deamgaard wrote:

Dear Brian

I just read about the Starmus programme. Wow it sounds exciting, but I have a little question. Can you attend without having a larger educational background? I am a science teacher myself and find everything about astronomy fascinating.

Its a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the observatories, which is one of my greatest wishes.

I hope you have the time to answer my question. You are fantastic.

Kindest regards

Betina

TOFF'S SEASON AGAIN

Cliff Burton wrote:

Hi Brian,

Yes it's that time of year again when the country Toff's come out in force for the mass slaughter of what can only be discribed as one of the country's most fantastic birds..the Pheasant!

Here in rural Oxfordshire I drove past a field last week that was surrounded by 4x4 farm vehicles, on one side of the field I counted 34 Toff's, all with Guns and approx the same amount of "beaters" on the opersite side of the field! All the gunmen had dogs that are trained to retrieve the birds that are shot and bring them back to their owners.

I pulled-up on the side of the road to view what was happening and was appalled to see hundreds of Pheasents falling from the sky and ploughing into the field! Some of the birds were no more than a few meters away from the gun that shot them wilst others were higher and further away before falling. There was a pile of dead birds approx 2mtrs high in the corner of the field by the main gateway and every 4x4 truck was completely full of dead Pheasants, all hanging from a rack by their necks.

What gives these people the right to shoot these fantastic birds, just because they and also the land owners raise these birds from young chicks does not mean they have the right to blast them from the sky? What really annoys me is that after each days shooting the toffs all congregate at our local pub, park their vehicles outside the front with all the dead birds in full view, and then go in for a beer and brag to all the locals about what they have done..like they have saved the world or done everyone a favour!

GARTH BROOKS' COVER OF SOMEBODY TO LOVE

Sämi Moor wrote:

Hi Brian

I just got my copy of Garth Brooks' new 6 CD Set "blame it all on my roots". It's a collection of covers of songs that he loved to listen to before he became "Garth" to the world and behold, on the "Classic Rock" CD there's a coverversion of "Somebody to love"!

And you know what? It's f***ing awesome!!!!

Now I've been a Queen Fan ever since I started listening to Rock Music and am therefor, like all Queen fans, somewhat "protektive" of the music of "my" band. But dammit, this version of Somebody to love is great.

I highly recommend that you should listen to it because I think, that maybe you folks might wanna consider doing something together. I mean, English Rock Legends Queen and Country superstar Garth Brooks, that is such a strange combination that it might actually work!

Oh and by the way, there are also two Paul Rodgers songs on that cd.

OK now. all the best and I'm really forward to that new Queen music

Kind regards

Sam

Brian replied:

Many thanks, Sam. I agree with you. Nice job. Garth is not one of the world's most massive stars ever by accident !

Never met him … but I hope we will.

Cheers

MORE ON '39 - FREDDIE VS BRIAN

Marieke Kroezen wrote:

Dear Brian

Whenever I hear you sing '39 on 'A night at the opera', the song gives me a warm feeling.. It gives me the feeling that I can be 'at home in the song'.. No matter how vague this may sound, I can't put it any better in words, I'm afraid..

Freddie singing '39 is a different experience, more vibrant probably, but less 'at home'..

Listening to you singing '39 is reassuring, somehow, so thanks for that Brian..

All the best
Marieke

Brian replied:

QUESTION ABOUT CONCERT 2012 AT HAMMERSMITH APOLLO

Christoph Mauder wrote:

Dear Mr. May,

First of all: Thank you for your music! It's always a pleasure to hear queen-songs. :-) I could write pages of pages (but as a german I would write it in my language. :)) what queen-songs mean to me.

So, I'll keep it short, I have only one question: At the beginning of the concert (by the way: it was amazing, thrilling and extraordinary), there was a sound in the flash-song, maybe a sample, I never heard before, shortly before the curtain was lifted.

Would you be so kind to tell me where is it from ? Or did you created it by yourself ? Today I saw "Doctor Who" and I supposed that its the sound of the tardis ?!

Thanks for your answer,

Chris from Germany.

Ps: my son would be sad, if I wouldn't tell you that he is a big fan of Queen, too. :-)

NO MORE FEATURED SONGS AFTER HOT SPACE

Ernest Barteldes wrote

Hi

I always wondered about something: Up to " The Game," both you and Roger had a featured song or two, but that ended following Hot Space (OK, there were the cameos on songs like " I Want It All" and " Invisible Man"but still... ) I thought it was such a diverse thing, to have all three voices singing lead from time to time. When and why was this decision made?

MORE '39 VOCAL QUESTIONS!!

Hi Brian

The recent question on your letters page regarding the vocals on ’39 has got me to thinking of a related question(s);

Back in ‘the old days’ of Queen live shows with Freddie, was there ever any thought as to you singing ’39 live, as per the record? Roger got to give the definitive live version of ‘I’m In Love With My Car’, and I always wondered if it was your decision, or a band one, to not have you replicate your lead vocals on that track? (Freddie obviously sang it very well though!) On ‘......Car’ Freddie could remain on stage playing the piano, so maybe with ’39, the fact that he would have been left at a loose end other than the chorus harmonies was a factor in this? Perhaps the same decision was taken which resulted in Freddie always singing the live lead on ‘Modern Times Rock n Roll’ even though Roger sang it on the record?

On a related point, did you guys ever rehearse any other tracks to play live with yourself or Roger taking lead vocals? You each usually took a track each on most of the early albums, so did perhaps ‘Long Away’, ‘Drowse’, ‘Some Day One Day’ etc ever get considered for the stage? It would be great to know these little tidbits of info!

Many thanks and best wishes

BEST GUITAR SOLO IN HISTORY :) ? ? ?

Eduardo De Lima wrote:

I honestly don't know why I haven't done this because I've had plenty of years to do it, I guess I never realized.

As you might know, I am a huge Queen fan, probably the biggest ever. Queen was the first piece of music I ever heard and it still is the reason why I want to do this for a living, create music that is. You are the reason why I have taken up guitar in the first place, and I will always be thankful for that. In spite of all the legendary tracks you 4 guys have created, you might be surprised to hear that my favorite record is and is always going to be Made In Heaven, what an irony isn't it? And this brings me to my point : I think the stuff you did on You Don't Fool me, head to toe, is the best guitar work anybody has ever done, and the solo is hugely underrated. That solo is the reason I picked up a guitar and started learning it. One of my biggest wishes is hearing you do it live at least once in this lifetime, if you can of course, I know fans have meant a lot to you over the years. I can't describe in the words the feeling that song gives me, and the sound of the guitar... It's heavenly. I hope you will answer, it would mean a lot.

Lots of love from Romania, hope you are well and wish you all the best.

CHATTERTON

Terry wrote:

Hi Brian,

I believe your picture in today's "soapbox" is by Henry Wallis depicting the death of young poet Thomas Chatterton at the age of 17. He committed suicide using arsenic. There is much written about his short life including quite a bit on Wikipaedia however I look forward with interest in finding out what you have to say about this interesting young man.

Best wishes
Terry

PS cannot wait to hear more about the Queen track.
