LETTER OF THE WEEK **Sun 30 Sep 07** Jacqueline Brockway wrote: Dear Dr May Thank you so much for caring for your fans in the way that you do. Watching you rise out of the stage at WWRY this afternoon [29 Sep 07] put the icing on the cake of what is easily the best musical in the West End. Instead of telling the press of your intention to play with the cast you put it on your soapbox, giving those of us who are genuinely interested in your music a chance to go and join in the fun again. Thank you so much for that. WWRY is the most exhilarating experience imaginable. It's certainly the only musical I've been to where I've felt as though I can join in and really be a part of the performance. Thank you again, and many congratulations for your recent academic achievements. All the very best, --- Brian replied: Great message - thanks so much Jacky ! My Letter of the week, I think !! Sometimes I need to hear this !! I have great love for our team, and it costs me nothing to do this ... it's just pure pleasure. But it's great to see and hear what effect it all has ... Noah Petro wrote: Dr. Bri, Beautiful image on the website! To answer the question of why they happen and why we don't always see them at the anti-solar point in a cloud, well, I'll try my best... 1. I think that they happen because of the backscattered light being scattered back to the viewer (in the plane). The light, passing through the water droplets, gets refracted as it passes out of the droplet causing the different colors (much like a rainbow). It's somewhat similar to the brightening observed on the lunar surface around astronauts, which is caused by the Opposition Effect, the tendency of the surface to appear brighter when the viewer is in line with the light source and surface (syzygy) http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/a11/AS11-40-5930HR.jpg 2. I think the last point addresses why we don't see them at theanti-solar point in clouds. The anti-solar point is always between the Zsource (Sun) and viewer, so when you are in a plane, on the top of aZmountain, in a hot air balloon, you are in a position to see such a point. But if you are far from the cloud surface, the scattering of light does not make such phenomena visible...so you only see such "glories" when the plane is near the cloud... I think, I may have to think about this while flying this weekend! Have a good one! --- Brian replied: Thanks Noah !! © brianmay.com |
**Fri 28 Sep 07** Paola Riccucci wrote: Dearest Dr. Bri, on "Soapbox - AN EVENING GLORY" you asked: Have we all seen these? I often see those halos on my airplane travels, because I just love watching the land and sea from above, so I always try to pick a window seat on the side of the aircraft opposite to the Sun, relative to the general (compass) direction and time of the day for the flight. The halos look particularly spectacular when the plane is flying at condensation trail height, because you can see the shadow of the trail projected onto the cloud tops, its tip following the (plane shadow in the) halo at a tiny distance. My knowledge of Earth atmosphere physics and light propagation physics is rather limited, but I suppose those halos happen for the same reason that Sun and Moon halos (as seen from ground) happen: diffraction/refraction of light into thin, high clouds, made of ice crystals of the appropriate size and structure. Which would explain why they are not always visible: they only appear when looking into / projected onto the "right" kind of cloud. I remember I was once seated near two young (male) engineers and their girlfriends: at some point, one of them spotted the halo-with-shadow on an intermittent cloud layer, and they immediately got all worked up that a UFO or some kind of stealth military plane was following our flight. When I heard one mention the "Klingon ship cloaking device" (of Star Trek fame), I had to hurt their personal and professional egoes a little bit, before they spread panic among the passengers around us... On a website you probably know, I found this spectacular picture, showing how a similar effect can also happen when looking from below: http://www.spaceweather.com/swpod2007/14apr07/Heden1.jpg Lots of love as always! --- Brian replied: Thanks Paola .. great story! I like the picture you found ... it's an ICE BOW, I think ... I have seen these occasionally and marvelled. It's a good point you make .... of course the top of clouds isn't always water droplets .. often it must be ice crystals, I guess ... love © brianmay.com |

**Fri 28 Sep 07** Anthony Fernando wrote: Hi Brian, I'm just back from a couple of weeks in Central Australia, where I was treated to crystal clear, moonless desert skies. Armed with my new 10x80 binoculars and an astronomy yearbook, I settled down to several nights' of getting to know the skies better than I ever had previously. The old favourites (Jupiter, omega Cen, 47 Tuc, starfields of Sagittarius) looked better than ever. New sights included Uranus (which I could even pick out with the naked-eye using averted vision once I knew where to look) and even Neptune. However, even the desert resorts like Yulara have localised light pollution. It wasn't until I was out hiking, 20 kilometres from the nearest light bulb and hundreds from the nearest town, that I had probably the astonomical highlight of the trip. A couple of hours after sunset, with the ecliptic oriented vertically, there was still a noticeable glow on the western horizon. Zodiacal light! I had never actually seen this before, and never realised how bright it can be in a dark sky. I suppose it's not called false dawn (or dusk) for nothing. It is amazing how much of the natural world we miss out on living in big, light-polluted cities. While we might be vaguely aware that we have become divorced from the earthly aspects of nature, we probably don't realise how removed we are from what most intrigued, inspired and awed our ancestors, and contributed so much to all our human cultures, namely the majesty of the heavens in all their brilliant, star-studded glory. I've tried to make a translation of the news here below. The title of the article plays with Zucchero's name (which you know means "Sugar" and they say "without sugar") and that bittersweet sensation of fans who are supposed to feel betrayed. (Sorry for the mistakes) --- Quote --- QUEEN: A "SUGARFREE" RETURN It's just a matter of "+". A mere mathematical symbol which in this case has a different meaning; like a gulf between past and present; a presumed separation of the untouchable (that is, the great Freddie Mercury, died on 1991) and the guy chosen as his substitute by his old mates. It was clear that many people - not only original Queen's fans - had not liked the idea to make a reunion of the Queen and to call Paul Rodgers to replace Freddie. Paul Rodgers has never wanted or even thought to be able to overshadow Mercury's fame. It seems that he had Some newspapers are giving the news that the "born again" Queen (that is, Queen with Paul Rodgers) are going to release a record with new songs. According to rumours, songs are ready. But here is the problem: what shall be the name of the band releasing the album? The Queen, simply, as in the past? Or, The Queen + Paul Rodgers, so that the "+" symbol marks the difference between something which represents the absolute best and will never be again versus what the other members of the band are now trying to resume? In conclusion, it's not just an issue of nostalgic fans or devoted to Freddie Mercury. Someone believes that there is a strong difference between what this famous British band wrote and represented in the history of rock and - on the contrary - what is going to be a very "skimpy" record compared with the most famous Queen's albums. "We will let things run their course, without any pressure. The interaction with Paul is the same as the one with Freddie" says Roger Taylor, drum player of the band. In the meantime, the controversy continues. Is it fair to keep the original name of the band or is it better to add a "+"? Give your opinions. --- Unquote --- Cheers --- Brian replied: Thanks Donatella. © brianmay.com |

**Thu 27 Sep 07** Dear Bri, ... Aabout an "incredible" piece of rubbish printed today by "Corriere della Sera" , unfortunately one of the most widespread Italian newspaper. But....before you get hundreds of emails asking if anything written is true, I had better inform you. Here' s the link for the online article: HERE In short, the article claims there's a sort of "thriller" around Queen .The journalist says the band will be forced to change its name, that you are all so disappointed by Paul Rodgers (although a new album is ready to be launched) and that the real frontman had to be Zucchero!!!! Actually the journalist says Brian called Zucchero asking if he'd like to be Queen's new singer. He also writes that you tried both with George Michael and Robbie Williams, but then you had to go for Paul Rodgers in the end. Furthermore, the journalist ( think a devote Catholic) reminds people that Queen were on tour in Italy when the previous Pope died and they didn't cancel any date. Of course my personal opinion is that this is a lot of rubbish. The bad thing is that Corriere della Sera is one of the most influential Italian newspapers. What have you done to deserve such a treatment from this Mr De Ponti???? (and by the way, I 've never heard of him as "musical journalist"). I'm speechless. Take care, TRANSLATED EXTRACT "A phone call reached Zucchero soon after that concert: Hi, this is Brian, we'd like to start it over again Queen. Would you like to become our singer? The man (Zucchero) took some time to think it over and then he refused the offer. He was honoured about this request, but he said he didn't want to abandon his project for a solo career" La telefonata a Zucchero arrivò poco dopo: ciao, sono Brian, avremmo voglia di ripartire con i Queen, che ne diresti di diventare il nostro cantante? L'uomo si prese un po' di tempo, poi declinò l'invito: era onorato dalla richiesta, disse, ma non se la sentiva di abbandonare una brillante carriera da solista. --- Reply see SOAPBOX -- MORE Andrea Spoldi wrote: Hi, It's Andrea from Italy writing; this morning I've found this article about the forthcoming release of new Queen's album with Paul on vocals. I wish to point it out to You all, I did a 5min translation of it from italian, sorry for mistakes, still hope it's good enough to you to understand it. A personal note: I didn't like the way the writer has explained some fact, and (I think) invented others. Here's the original and my translation following. ------------- The Queen mystery The band is doubtful: are we gonna change name ? Light shed on a secret involvment with Zucchero. Milan - a "plus", itself, makes the difference. For the over 300 million record sold rock band Queen, a 'plus' means even more. Freedie Mercury's band, rock icon defeated by AIDS on November 24th 1991, heads back studios for the first time in sixteen years. Actually, they're already got into sessions, but October will see them back again for post-production and ultimate mixing of the nine new songs written with Paul Rodgers, the vocalist bearing honour and obey of replace Mercury as band's voice. But then the 'plus' comes out: will it be a "Queen + Paul Rodgers" release, as worldwide fans community would prefer, or a "Queen" one, with no plus, as greedy majors wish ? That's not a pointless question : "Queen + Paul Rodgers", the name choosen for the firs tour after Mercury (and for ROTC cd and dvd), would make easier to accept, for die-hard fans, the presence of a singer who, in studio more than live, will have to live with the shadow of the dear gone, one of the most versatile and recognizable voices in Rock History. But it's true nevertheless that plain <<Queen>> would be more billboard striking. And, secretly, Rodgers himself would be eager to get rid of that "plus", not willing to be a session singer but a full time group member. The only risk is that this name dispute might push forward the release date of this the long awaited record. The "plus" will win in the end. But the truth is: Queen are back on work. "There was not plan to produce a new album, as well as there were no plans to be touring as we did in 2005, it all came out spontanously. It's great to be useful again", says Roger Taylor, drummer. Guitarist Brian May follows : "The interaction with Roger and Paul is similar to what Queen had when Freddie was still around, the one of a band who dares and experiments". Somehow like what Paul Rodgers states: " We want things to develop naturally, with no pressure or hurry". A small detail to be mentioned. At the beginning new Queen's frontman was not to be Paul Rodgers, but Zucchero. It all was born in Capetown following 46664 concert, where also the Italian bluesman was billed. He was joined on stage by May and Taylor, and Sharon (not Andrea as stated on the article, personal note by me as translator) Corr, Corrs violin. A performance made unforgettable with videoclip <<Indaco dagli ocche del cielo>>. A phonecall to Zucchero followed by: "Hi, it's Brian speaking, we would like to start again with Queen, would you like to become our singer?" The man (Zucchero) took his time, then stepped back: he was honoured to be asked, he said, but he was not to leave a brilliant solo carreer. And within his heart he thought that it would be unfair to come down and compete with Freddie, who even after less than 16 years since his passing, it's a divinity (or maybe more) for his fans. Zucchero has never regret his choice and goes on filling up arenas with his Italian Style Blues. But his "no" didn't stop Queen's war machine. John Deacon, former band's bass player, stepped aside, but said to understand the will of Brian and Roger to hit back the stage and allowed the use of Queen logo. So after some attempts (rumours about Robbie Williams or George Michael as potential frontmen) all band's attention was focused on Paul Rodgers, former Free and Bad Company singer. A singer who, by chance, has a vocal timber more similar to Zucchero than Mercury. The three of them started a worldwide tour which get angry even the Vatican and Italian Protezione Civile (Queen performed in Rome the very next monday to John Paul II 's death, ignoring the request to cancel the event), but that reached a huge success, Mercury's songs Karaoke with Paul Rodgers leading the choir. Now it's time to start again, and Rodgers will have to count on his own legs. With or without " + " . ------------------- Cheers. --- Brian replied: Thanks Andrea ... this will be a very useful translation for us to have. This man seems to have a severe 'chip on his shoulder' ... he must be harbouring some kind of jealous hatred, to want to invent bogus information in this way. Perhaps he thought we wouldn't find out !!! Take care love --- SUBSEQUENT MAIL..... Hi Dr. BHM, Yes I had the same idea of yours...what I see very unfair, for you (Rog an yourself) and Paul, is this continous using of "replacement", "substitute", and even when he writes about Paul willing to be a full time Queen member...when since day 0 of your collaboration you've always stated otherwise, and not only on your soapbox but almost everywhere on the net... it's sad... Can you tell me what the song is about and who is Jane at No.4? This is a song at the end of "A Night at the Opera" and are you playing the Banjo, as it sounds like you are if you aren't? What instrument are you playing please? From --- Brian replied: I don't know what you mean about this baby falling! Mick Wall missed out "Good Company"? Silly man! Ah - the song is just a little story about life ... the meaning ought to be self-explanatory when you listen to the words. It's a little work of fiction. No living resemblance....etc etc ... It was a Ukelele ... Lots of love, JANE Bri © brianmay.com |
