Fabulous eclipse picture

Some explanation about this fabulous eclipse picture. Firstly – apologies – I’ve made a mistake in my commentary. I refer to an ‘eclipsed Moon’ – and of course it’s not being eclipsed – it’s the body that is eclipsing the Sun – viewed from the Orion space vehicle. I also didn’t explain what the Zodiacal Light is ! For me it’s a familiar thing – because I spent many years of my life studying for my PhD thesis.

It’s light in the night sky reflected from the Sun’s dust cloud – which ranges from the Sun way out into Solar system, way beyond the orbit of the Earth. It’s not spherical in shape – more like the shape of two saucers clapped together front to front — concentrated in the principal plane of the solar system. From the Earth this means it’s seen as a cone shape in a dark sky — stretching along the line of the ECLIPTIC – the path the Sun appears to travel along as seen from Earth. In this overlaid picture from the SKY GUIDE app, the Ecliptic is the yellow line. The celestial equator is the blue line. Enjoy !!
