On This Day in Queen History – 24 August

In 1969 – Ibex played the open-air Bluesology Festival, Queen’s Park, Bolton, UK.
In 1975 – Queen starts recording ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ at Rockfield studio’s in Wales. The band sang their vocal parts continually for 10-12 hours per day, three days straight, resulting in 180 separate vocal overdubs. Guitarist Brian May recalled placing the tape in front of a light and being able to see through it, as they had been recording so intensely. Source: New Jersey 101.5

In 1979 – “We Will Rock You (Live Killers – Fast – Single Edit)” bw “Let Me Entertain You (Live Killers – Single version)” released on Elektra, USA.
In 1980 – Queen played the Civic Centre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. In 1982 – Queen played the Omni, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
In 1982 – ‘Back Chat’ entered UK charts at no 40. Also released in 12″ version being first ever Queen song released in different version to LP release.

In 1984 – Queen played the Forest National, Brussels, Belgium.

In 1992 – Brian released ‘Too Much Love Will Kill You‘, ‘I’m Scared’ (single version), ‘Too Much Love Will Kill You’ (guitar version) and ‘Driven By You’ (new version) single formats (UK), including a “Pill” in the UK, peaking No 5 during 9 week stay in singles chart.

Brian collaborated with Frank Musker and Elizabeth Lamers as a songwriter on TMLWKY.

“It happened when I was in America when I was trying to get away from life, and I wrote it with a couple of friends whom I just met, who sort of helped me get it out of my system. It was like a cathartic thing.” (1992 Back To The Light EPK)

He would later tell the Orange County Register in 1993 that the song “was the first song written for the album, dating back six years.”

In 2005 – “We Will Rock You: The Musical” ends Japanese run, Shinijuku Koma Theatre, Tokyo, Japan.
In 2012 – Rufus Taylor plays a surprise guest spot on ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ with the Foo Fighters at Leeds Festival, UK.
In 2014 – Final date 2014 “We Will Rock You” N America Tour at Ahmanson Theatre, LA, USA.
In 2014 – Queen + Adam Lambert arrived in Sydney, Australia.
In 2015 – A press release announced release of the single “Little Freddie Goes To School” ft vocals by Freddie Mercury – written by Irish composer Stuart Leathem, about Freddie’s childhood in Zanzibar and his school days in India. The track sung by Irish classical singer Esther Trousdale and Freddie Mercury is heard in the chorus.
In 2015 – Universal Music’s press release announced exclusive preview and presentation of “Queen: The Studio Collection” Box Set at UK’s National Audio Show, Whittlebury Hall, Northamptonshire.
In 2016 – Brian May gave an interview on hedgehogs for BBC Surrey’s “Breakfast” show to be broadcast on 26.08.2016
In 2017 – USA edition of “Queen In 3-D” ibook published by The London Stereoscopic Company, and Brian May was a guest on Los Angeles KTLA5 “Morning News”. Other interviews with Brian broadcast on LA radio shows “Jonesy’s Jukebox”, KLOS Radio and “The Sound” with Cynthia Fox. Brian also held a book signing for “Queen In 3-D” at Book Soup bookstore on Sunset Boulevard, LA.
