Hey Uncle Joe. Tell us a story….

JOE: I was talking with Brian May guitarist with Queen, and Roger Taylor, the drummer of Queen,… especially Brian was talking to us – one of our favourite songs is a Christmas song, it’s “Thank God Its Christmas”. When did that come together and did you like doing it the middle of July?

BRIAN MAY: Yeah, Christmas songs are always recorded in the middle of July….

JOE: They are.

BRIAN: … to be ready in time. Yeah. it was and this was Roger’s composition mainly. He said he didn’t have a chorus, so I contributed a chorus and we worked on it together, to cut a long story short, and then, when it was almost finished, we presented it to Freddie, who loved it and did a beautiful vocal. I think it’s just the most understated vocal, and I love it,. You know, the funny thing is, it doesn’t get that much attention in Britain as a Christmas single. It doesn’t have a video. Everything’s about video these days, and we never made a video for that song, it’s all in your mind, but I’m very fond of it. I think it’s a very different kind of Christmas song.

JOE: That’s the story.

WE THINK: Regrettable there is no video for this to be included in the annual festive round of songs on our TV screens. Thank God It’s Christmas will no doubt survive us all.

Queen, “Thank God It’s Christmas”: A feel-good anthem written by Brian May and Roger Taylor, this was recorded in 1984, when Freddie Mercury was still at the top of his game. Available on Queen’s “Greatest Hits III” and “Now That’s What I Call Music: The Christmas Album.”
