WE WILL ROCK YOU – From 12 September to 13 December 2014 at Deutsches Theater, Munich
WE WILL ROCK YOU, the original QUEEN musical featuring 21 of the legendary band’s greatest hits, will be rocking Munich from September 2014!
Finally, experience the QUEEN musical in the city that during the 1980s was a refuge, not only musically, for the rock heroes Freddy Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. This is where the British band recorded many of the tracks for their albums The Game, Hot Space, The Works and A Kind of Magic at the legendary Musicland Studios between 1979 and 1986, constantly re-inventing their sound. This was the period of the birth of such mega-hits as Another One Bites The Dust, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and I Want to Break Free.
WE WILL ROCK YOU, produced in conjunction with Brian May and Roger Taylor, is one of the most successful musicals of all time. More than fifteen million fans from around the world have already been rocked by the show, with more than six million alone at the Dominion Theatre, one of the biggest stages in the West End of London. No wonder We WILL ROCK YOU has won prizes such as the West End’s sought-after Olivier Audience Award, in 2011.
Brian May: “We are thrilled that we can present WE WILL ROCK YOU in this latest technically revised version in German for the first time in Munich. We still feel deeply attached to Munich. We recorded four hit albums here. Freddie felt very much at home here. We are very proud of this German production. It is like no other in the world. The ensemble and the group have their very own style. But what matters most … the show is live, dangerous and more than anything else: it rocks!”
The Deutsches Theater will be showing the updated original version of the QUEEN musical, including newly re-mastered video animations created by production designer, the late Mark Fisher in collaboration with the acclaimed lighting designer Willie Williams. Between them Fisher and Williams designed some of the most spectacular rock tours, most prominently their joint work for U2.
The cast and band need to have what it takes to reach the high standards of QUEEN’s back catalogue and of this rhapsodic musical production, so they are being selected at international auditions. Then there will be intensive rehearsals before the premiere in Munich and the author and director Ben Elton himself will put the finishing touches to the script, giving the rock musical at Deutsches Theater its own, fresh feel.
In Munich the music supervision will again be in the hands of rock icons Brian May and Roger Taylor themselves; after all, the QUEEN songs not only form the backbone to the story but also guarantee that extravagant rock sound. At the end the two legendary QUEEN musicians will decide who meets their high standards and can rock in the WE WILL ROCK YOU band in Munich.
The original London version of the rock musical was written by the celebrated bestselling author Ben Elton (behind “Mr Bean” and more) and was produced by Queen Theatrical Productions along with Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Theatrical Productions and Phil McIntyre Entertainment. The music and lyrics to WE WILL ROCK YOU of course come from QUEEN, with Ben Elton again directing.
The QUEEN story is one of the most impressive in pop history with more than 170 million albums sold worldwide, 18 number-one albums, numerous number-one singles and DVDs, joining the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, over 700 concerts all over the world, including the historic appearance at Live Aid and a Guinness Book of World Records Award for the most successful UK chart album in history – QUEEN was and is one of the greatest rock groups of all time. 2011 marked the mega-group’s fortieth anniversary. Their own musical WE WILL ROCK YOU crowns the group’s incredible success story in an impressive way.
WE WILL ROCK YOU tells the story of a globalised future without musical instruments. A handful of rock rebels, the “Bohemians”, fight against the all-powerful Globalsoft company and its boss, the Killer Queen; they fight for freedom, individuality and the rebirth of the age of rock. Scaramouche and Galileo, two young outsiders, cannot come to terms with the bleak conformist reality. They join the Bohemians and embark on the search to find the unlimited power of freedom, love and Rock!
From September 2014 the very first “Rock Theatrical”, as Brian May calls the musical, will be coming to Deutsches Theater Munich for just a few months in its original production and an elaborate German version.
With a wink and many ironic sideswipes WE WILL ROCK YOU is more than just a show title, more than a musical and more than a rock concert – it is a promise: WE WILL ROCK YOU!
