FORGET LED ZEPPELIN OR THE STONES: QUEEN VOTED BEST BAND OF THE 70s
Direct link

THE SUN
11 February 2016

Freddie Mercury best frontman

QUEEN have been voted the best band of the '70s.

The Bohemian Rhapsody group came out top in a recent poll of 2,000 music fans, taken to mark the launch of Sky Atlantic’s new rock 'n' roll TV series Vinyl.

It was a battle between disco and rock for the top 10 – with Queen emerging victorious ahead of Abba, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Bee Gees and Led Zeppelin.

While Queen reigned supreme when it came to bands, the favourite '70s album was Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, while Eric Clapton was named best guitarist.

However, the poll didn’t just survey music – when it came to the best thing about the 1970s, Star Wars came up trumps.

THE LONDON ECONOMIC
11 February 2016

EXTRACT: Freddie Mercury on vocals, Eric Clapton on guitar, Paul McCartney on bass and Phil Collins on drums – not a bad little combo.

That’s the dream line-up for the perfect 70s supergroup as voted for in a poll of 2,000 music fans to mark the launch of Sky Atlantic’s new rock and roll TV drama ‘Vinyl’ available exclusively on the channel from 15 February. The ultimate band would have an amazing choice of original material for their set-list – everything from Hey Jude and Bohemian Rhapsody to Layla and In the Air Tonight.

The late music legend David Bowie was second in line for vocals followed by Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger, Debbie Harry and Elton John.

... Rock and disco battled it out head-to-head for the title of best band of the 70s, with Queen emerging victorious ahead of Abba, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Bee Gees and Led Zeppelin.

Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 blockbuster Rumours – thought to have sold over 40 million copies worldwide – was named best album of the 70s, beating Queen’s A Night at the Opera, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and Hotel California by The Eagles.

But when it came to the best thing about the 1970s, music had to take second place – to Star Wars. The epic sci-fi movie, which came out in 1977, beat Abba, David Bowie, Jaws, the VW Beetle, Concorde, Starsky and Hutch, Charlie’s Angels and lava lamps.

The survey was commissioned by Sky Atlantic ahead of the start of new drama series Vinyl, set in the music industry in New York during the 1970s, co-produced by Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter.

QUEEN - A NIGHT IN BOHEMIA - ON SALE FRIDAY
Direct link

Tue 8 March - Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, February 12.

TRAILER HERE

Queen wrapped up their 1975 A Night at the Opera tour of England with an unforgettable show at London's Hammersmith Odeon that was broadcast live on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test. The recording circulated within the fan community for decades before the band finally released it on CD late last year. On March 8th at 7 p.m., it will be screened at more than 200 movie theaters across the country via Fathom Events. Tickets go on sale this Friday and can be purchased HERE.

Queen - A Night In Bohemia

The event is called Queen: A Night in Bohemia and will also include a previously unseen documentary about the group's slow rise to fame, building up to the creation of their 1975 masterpiece "Bohemian Rhapsody." That song had been out for less than two months at the time of the Hammersmith Odeon concert, and the group was just beginning to figure out how to play it in a concert setting. The rest of the show centers around earlier tunes like "Killer Queen," "Ogre Battle" and "Keep Yourself Alive."

"Christmas Eve 1975 marked an important moment in the history of the Old Grey Whistle Test and Queen," Old Grey Whistle Test host Bob Harris tells Rolling Stone. "The band were in party mood at the Hammersmith Odeon that night and no wonder. They had already spent the best part of a month at the top of the UK singles chart with the sensational 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' the video for which had instantly redefined the presentation of music on TV. They were at the peak of their powers - confident and stage sharp at the end of a barnstorming UK tour. I donned top hat and tails to salute and introduce them before they played one of the best sets I had ever seen. It was an incredible night but it was more even than that. It was the moment Queen became superstars."

In the exclusive above clip from the documentary, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor discuss the creation of "Bohemian Rhapsody." "It's just the four of us," says May. "But it does sound like a huge symphony ensemble with a choir, but it's just the four of us. It was a great vision from Freddie. That was something very unusual. It's only in retrospect we realize how unusual it was. In a sense, it was part of the flow. It didn't seem that abnormal to us at the time."

Queen took a long break after the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, but in recent years, May and Taylor have toured the world with Adam Lambert. They are touring Europe this summer, kicking off on May 20th at Rock In Rio in Portugal.

First Date – Hyundai Super Bowl Commercial | The 2016 Hyundai Genesis
- https://youtu.be/zZpE5XJpqz4

EXAMINER
8 February 2016

One great way to introduce classic rock songs and music to younger generations is have them appear in coveted Super Bowl ads. That’s exactly what happened on Super Bowl Sunday on CBS when six television commercials featured two songs from Queen and other greatest hits from Aerosmith, Van Halen, Nilsson, and the late David Bowie.
Special Versions with Other Lead Vocalists - In Memory Of Freddie (CD Album Queen, 17 Tracks) cover
Promotional image

Four of these TV ads are for automobiles, while the rest went for a hard-coated chewy candy and everyone’s favourite condiment for hamburgers and hot dogs. Here’s an explanation of each song title, artist, and commercial product presented to classic rock lovers everywhere from Super Bowl 50.

“Another One Bites the Dust” - Queen (Hyundai Genesis)

No matter the generation there’s always a concerned father when his daughter begins dating for the first time. Kevin Hart stars as a father whose daughter is going out on a date. Her boyfriend picks her up at home with the father offering his car to drive for the evening. Little does the boyfriend know the Hyundai Genesis has a tracking device, so dad follows them everywhere on their date. First they go to the movies, a carnival, and a parking spot to get very romantic (and hopefully away from the overly protective papa). While all this is transpiring, you hear Queen’s number one hit “Another One Bites the Dust” as the victorious soundtrack.

“Somebody to Love” - Queen (Honda Ridgeline)

These sheep don’t always go “ba ba,” instead they sing Queen’s gospel-styled power ballad from 1976 “Somebody to Love” off the band’s acclaimed “A Day at the Races” album. A sheep farmer is loading sheep onto the back of a new 2016 Honda Ridgeline truck. As he loads them off onto the pasture, you can hear the faint song by Queen played inside the truck’s powerful sound system. Like sheep will do when following their master, they sing along to the radio whatever’s playing.
