TWO-HOUR DOCUMENTARY “THE SHOW MUST GO ON:
THE QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT STORY’ AIRS 29 APRIL

Two-hour Documentary 'The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story' Airs Monday, April 29 (8:00 – 10:00 p.m. ET) on ABC

Queen + Adam Lambert
Photo Credit: Courtesy of Miracle Productions

On the heels of Queen and Adam Lambert’s show-stopping opening performance at the Oscars on Sunday, February 24, Lincoln Square Productions has acquired the U.S. television rights to a documentary from Miracle Productions on the iconic band and their new regular frontman, Adam Lambert. Produced by Jim Beach and acclaimed writer and filmmaker Simon Lupton, “The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story” airs MONDAY, APRIL 29 (8:00 – 10:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network, prior to Queen and Lambert’s already sold-out July/August 2019 U.S. “Rhapsody” tour.

With rare concert footage and exclusive, revealing portraits of the band members off-stage, “The Show Must Go On” chronicles Queen and Lambert’s incredible journey since they first shared the stage together on “American Idol” in 2009. From his humble beginnings and meteoric rise on reality TV to now standing center stage as lead singer of Queen + Adam Lambert, the documentary features brand new interviews with Lambert, his parents Leila and Eber and Queen founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor, as well as “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell, Golden Globe (and Oscar) winner for Best Actor, “Bohemian Rhapsody”’s Rami Malek and Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins.

Queen remain vanguards of rock in the 21st century. They scored their first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980 and soared through that decade performing in stadiums, including their landmark 1985 performance at Live Aid which was seen by 3 billion people worldwide. Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991 and a star-studded tribute concert the following year was thought to be the conclusion of Queen live.

“The Show Must Go On” simultaneously follows the ensuing 27 years. Lambert, starting at the age of 10, is beginning to come of age, discovers his love of music and finds a voice of his own while, across the pond, the surviving members of Queen see their songs remain staples with DJ’s, in clubs, in theatres around the globe with their hit musical “We Will Rock You” and in movies. Lambert and Queen intersected in spectacular fashion when Lambert first performs with the band, singing “We Are the Champions” as one of only two finalists on Season 8 of “American Idol.” The public reaction was remarkable and first seeded the idea that perhaps Lambert might become a permanent fixture in the Queen family. In 2012 Queen + Adam Lambert was born. To date Queen + Adam Lambert have performed together in nearly 200 sold-out shows in arenas and stadiums across the world. “The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story” is produced by Simon Lupton and Jim Beach for Miracle Productions and Matt Lombardi is executive producer for Lincoln Square Productions.

Lincoln Square Productions is wholly-owned by the American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. and is a part of ABC News’ Long Form programming unit, which includes “20/20,” “Truth and Lies” and “Nightline.” The headquarters are located in New York City’s Lincoln Square neighborhood.

ABOUT ADAM LAMBERT After blowing everyone away on the eighth season of American Idol, Adam Lambert went on to release his debut album ‘For Your Entertainment’ which included the international hit ‘Whatya Want From Me’ and earned him a Grammy Award nomination. Adam followed this success with his second album ‘Trespassing’ which became the first album to reach the number one spot in the US and Canada by an openly gay artist. His highly anticipated third album ‘The Original High’ was executive produced by Max Martin and Shellback and included the smash hit ‘Ghost Town’. Adam joined the cast of Glee for a six-episode story in 2013 and performed the role of Eddie in Fox’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He went on to judge on The X Factor Australia where his artist, Isaiah, won the show. 2019 will see Adam releasing his fourth album, and also exploring the world of film, voicing character 'Emperor Maximus' in upcoming animated-live action hybrid movie ‘Playmobil: The Movie’. His new song ‘Feel Something’ came out on February 22nd.

TRANSCRIPT OF PRESENTATION TO RAMI MALEK:

And the Oscar goes to Rami Malek!

[ cheers and applause ]

This is the first Oscar and nomination for Rami Malek.

[ cheers and applause ]

RAMI MALEK:

Oh, my God. My Mom is in here somewhere.

[ cheers and applause ]

Oh, i love you. I love you, lady. My family. Thank you for all of this.

You know, my Dad didn't get to see me do any of this, but I think he's looking down on me right now.

So, this is a monumental moment, one I'm so appreciative of.  All of you, to everyone who has had a hand in getting me here. To the academy, to people who took a chance on me, every step of the way. Graham King, Dennis O'Sullivan, everyone at Fox and New Regency.

I know I wasn't the obvious choice, but I guess it worked out.

Thank you, Queen. Thank you guys for being, for allowing me to be the tiniest part of your phenomenal, extraordinary legacy. I am forever in your debt.

[ applause ]

My crew and my cast, I love you.  You are my equals, my betters. I could have never been here
without you.

I think about what it would have been like to tell little Bubba Rami that one day this might happen to him, and I think his curly-haired little mind would be blown.

He was struggling with his identity, trying to figure himself out, and I think to anyone struggling with theirs, and trying to discover their voice, listen, we made a film about a gay man, an immigrant, who lived his life just unapologetically himself.  The fact that I'm celebrating him and this story with you
tonight is proof that we're longing for stories like this.

I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, a first-generation American.

[ applause ]

And part of my story is being written right now and  I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me - for this moment.  It's something I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Lucy Boynton, you're the heart of this film. You are beyond immensely talented. You have captured my heart.

WORLD’S BIGGEST ROCK BAND OWNS HOLLYWOOD’S BGGEST NIGHT
QUEEN IS FIRST ROCK BAND TO EVER OPEN THE OSCARS
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY IS HIGHEST-GROSSING BIOPIC OF ALL TIME

Los Angeles, CA (February 24, 2019) – The 91st Academy Awards saw the world’s biggest rock band own Hollywood’s biggest night.

Legendary rock band QUEEN + Adam Lambert opened—and stole—the show at the star-studded Oscars, performing a medley of two of their most iconic songs, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions,” getting a much-deserved standing ovation from Tinseltown’s elite. Watch their electrifying tour de force HERE.

It was also a history-making performance, as QUEEN is the first rock band to ever open the Academy Awards. “Guitarist Brian May was the first to appear on stage, shredding on his guitar to the iconic beat of ‘We Will Rock You,’” wrote Rolling Stone. “Lambert joined, paying homage to (Freddie) Mercury’s gravity-defying vocals and unmistakable showmanship.”

QUEEN, who were recently the No. 1 streamed artist on Spotify, was celebrating the Oscar nomination and blockbuster success of the award-winning 20th Century Fox film, Bohemian Rhapsody, a tribute to the band’s enduring legacy and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and convention to become one of history’s most beloved entertainers. Bohemian Rhapsody is the highest-grossing biopic of all time and the fifth top-grossing release of all time for Fox.

The legendary Bohemian Rhapsody single, regularly cited as one of the greatest songs ever recorded, was recently recognized as the world’s most-streamed song from the 20th Century, as well as the most-streamed Classic Rock song of all time. “Bohemian Rhapsody” hit No. 1 on the iTunes Rock Chart and No. 10 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs Chart and has been on that chart every week since the film’s release.

QUEEN original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor will team up once more with vocalist Adam Lambert for the Rhapsody tour, an epic 25-date run from mid-July through late August. The North American headline tour will be produced by Live Nation.

After blowing everyone away on the eighth season of American Idol, Adam Lambert went on to release his debut album For Your Entertainment which included the international hit “Whatya Want From Me” and earned him a Grammy Award nomination. Adam followed this success with his second album Trespassing which became the first album to reach the number one spot in the US and Canada by an openly gay artist. QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT TO PERFORM AT THE OSCARS

The Oscars: 24 February. 5pm PST

Queen + Adam Lambert Will Rock You - https://youtu.be/H4gwi1N21Kc

Queen and Adam Lambert will perform at the Oscars where Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody will battle it out for five awards

DAILYMAIL
18 February 2019

The impressive list of performers at this year's 91st Academy Awards just keeps getting better. It's been revealed now that Queen will be rocking out at the Oscars on Sunday with Adam Lambert on vocals. The Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is nominated for five Academy Awards including best picture.

And the movie's star Rami Malek is up for best actor for his portrayal of the late singing icon.

'Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?' came a tweet from the Academy on Monday, quoting lyrics from Queen's hit Bohemian Rhapsody as it announced the news.

'We welcome @QueenWillRock and @adamlambert to this year’s #Oscars!' they wrote.

The band have been performing under the name Queen + Adam Lambert including two of the four original members, Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums.

American Idol alum Lambert has been singing with the band since 2011 and the group completed a successful world tour between 2014 to 2018.

The 37-year-old admitted he was initially intimidated at the prospect of filling Freddie's shoes. He told PEOPLE in September: 'Not only did I have to make sure my voice held up and I know all the words… but it was also the perception of fans; I definitely had some concerns. This is not my music that I wrote: This is me, as a guest, with one of the greatest rock bands of all time, singing the songs that one of the greatest rock singers of all time brought to life.' The Indiana born entertainer added, 'Freddie is irreplaceable.'

BRIAN MAY & ROGER TAYLOR ON RAMI MALEK'S MORPH INTO FREDDIE MERCURY
Direct link

DEADLINE:
Oscars Last Call: Queen’s Brian May & Roger Taylor On Rami Malek’s Morph Into Freddie Mercury In ‘Bohemian Rhapsody
15 February 2019 by Mike Fleming Jr

Interview:

DEADLINE: When this movie was being assembled, so much was dependent on the depiction of Freddie Mercury. Describe that first meeting with Rami Malek, and what he showed you that made you believe he could pull this off?

BRIAN MAY: My stereo picture from the QUEEN in 3-D book shows us in that very first meeting.

Brian May, Rami Malek and Roger Taylor - first meeting

It actually says it all! After a few minutes with him in Roger’s flat, everything about Rami had clicked with us. His reading of Freddie’s personality was spot on. His instinctive “inhabiting” of Freddie’s physical presence was already uncanny. We watched his demo screen tests — which were great — but really it was the feeling in the room that here was the perfect man to don Freddie like an overcoat! Of course, Rami had already mastered Freddie’s unique accent and tone of voice. But his characterization went much further than that.

ROGER TAYLOR: We were utterly charmed by this interestingly-dressed, charismatic pocket-battleship of a man!

DEADLINE: Describe the specific qualities…

TAYLOR: Intelligence and intensity, plus he really looked right for the part.

MAY: Above his obvious skills, he was someone who, as a human being, made us feel like we wanted to welcome him as family. And that’s the way it worked out.

DEADLINE: How were you able to help him get the handle on his role, especially the onstage scenes?

MAY: We spent quite a bit of time together in those weeks prior to shooting. I guess we opened up to him easily, Roger and I. So I think a certain familiarity grew up. There was no feeling that we had to “pump him up” — I think he just absorbed the whole atmosphere of how it would have been to be Freddie, amongst us.

The same applied to Gwil [Gwilym Lee played May and re-created the virtuoso guitar work that was as much a signature of the band as Mercury’s voice]. I spent some good fun times with Gwil, examining the way I played certain guitar pieces, and talking about how some of those moments felt, and in particular the kind of dynamic that I felt with Freddie and the rest of the band. He absorbed it all incredibly well — but I became aware later that he had also absorbed my whole “persona” — my body language, my way of reacting to moments. Gwil, in my opinion, gives a wonderful performance which will grow in appreciation.

DEADLINE: What mannerisms of Freddie Mercury were you most concerned with seeing onscreen?

TAYLOR: We left that to him and his astute comprehension, gained from Freddie’s interviews.

MAY: We weren’t concerned. Rami “got it” from the start.

DEADLINE: There must have been a moment where you watched those actors performing and got nostalgic for those glory days. How close was it to how you remembered it?

MAY: It’s all great. Some of what you see on the screen was improvised … and it’s more real than anything that could have been imposed upon them. Those guys “became” us. I saw it first on the first day of filming … Live Aid. The atmosphere was electric. There’s an iPhone capture of me in the wings on that day on my [SOAPBOX and]Instagram feed. You can see how completely authentic that moment was — on a set which miraculously reproduced every inch of the original Live Aid stage.

AT THE LIVE AID SET (Credit: ©Flynet/ SPLASH NEWS)

TAYLOR: The Live Aid sequence was first – his stage moves were spot on. Offstage — mostly uncannily real!

DEADLINE: Were you there often during shooting the Live Aid concert performance scenes?

MAY: Yes, when we weren’t away on tour!

TAYLOR: Two days — once with Bob Geldof — didn’t want to interfere.

DEADLINE: Please describe what you felt and said to each other, after watching the movie, the dailies, and replaying those seminal coming-of-age days for a great band?

MAY: Too much to tell really. Roger and I both got concerned at certain things … and we became involved in many discussions after seeing rough cuts. But when we finally saw the rough assembly of the whole film, and sat with our partners for the first time, we ALL got uncontrollably emotional — way beyond what we’d expected, even though we’d seen the whole thing growing in front of our eyes.

TAYLOR: So much was scarily close to real — strange feelings!

DEADLINE: And the memories of your dear departed friend as you watched Rami Malek?

TAYLOR: I think he got on top of Freddie’s speaking voice — a difficult trick — I loved above all things the fact that the film moved people and ultimately exhilarated them — all we could ask for or want.

MAY: We felt only joy. So often, we could sense Freddie sitting in the wings, smiling wickedly … and saying “You buggers got THAT bit right .. ha ha !!”

Just to add…. I’ve been astounded by the outpourings of positive emotion from audience members all around the world. People are deeply moved, to laugh, and cry, and they get inspired — feel that they have seen a new truth … and to keep coming back and back to experience the journey again and again.

Also I’ve been bemused by the intense bitterness it’s evoked from a few people, who seem to want to shout about how bad they think the film is. I don’t yet fully understand what the motivation is. All I can think, overall, is that there is a similar jealous righteousness about a lot of the criticism that is very reminiscent of the way our music was reviewed over the years. You even see that in the movie. Maybe there is just something about what we put into our work that unites most of the world, but makes a small peripheral group of people feel resentful.

My feeling is … that on the whole, between Graham, and Fox, and the whole team — including DoP, Editor, Sound, crews, extras, and us — we made the right film. It makes me happy to see the fine work done by our team recognized, as it has been.
