Rockers Queen have been crowned top of the patriotic pops in a survey of 100,000 music fans. The band's anthem We Are The Champions was named number one by fans who were asked what song made them proud to be British. The track, which got to number two in 1977, picked up 13,000 votes in the survey carried out among users of the Lucky Voice karaoke website.

But you can't beat the feel good factor of We Are The Champions - especially when sung with your mates at high volume. We need all the help we can get this summer to give the UK a massive boost and we urge everyone out there to get into the patriotic spirit, show their support and help by singing our way to success."

Musical We Will Rock You en Hyde Park (Londres 2012)

**Tue 31 Jul 12**

We Will Rock You - I Want It All

We Will Rock You posterPleasing report of Sunday's performance by the London cast, in Hyde Park, as part of BT LONDON LIVE.

31 July 2012 by Claire Mitchell

The wayward weather conditions only heightened the anticipation of We Will Rock You in Hyde Park. Amongst Gourmet Burger stalls, Fish and Fat Chips, Cadbury House and a live performance from Roots Manuva; the audience around the main stage started to grow. The large screen showed judo and gymnastics, as umbrellas went up and down; eagerness for the supervening rock display was palpable.

Finally, an assortment of colourful corsets, leather, dog collars, and birds’ nests spilled out onto the stage. The best songs of Queen came pouring from their microphones by voices that projected and bounced around the arena in Hyde Park. The familiar songs filled the air, raising many arms, and inspiring lots of interesting renditions and dance moves across the audience.

The cast of We Will Rock You were energetic and springy, and the animated lighting display and futuristic presentations on screens behind them added to their vigorous performance. From the first chords of Fat Bottomed Girls to the moving rendition of We Are the Champions, and a final stirring performance of Bohemian Rhapsody, the Dominion Theatre cast excelled in the challenging outdoor space, and continued to be confronted with an expanding audience.

The famous musical utilises Queen’s best hits, as it exploits the idea of dystopia, and is now universally performed, bringing in audiences from all around the world. Amongst a plethora of awards, We Will Rock You still continues to entertain, and these “pop-up” performances, showcasing the best moments of this long-standing musical, are more than worth seeing. It is nothing more than a celebration of Queen, and an excuse to tap feet and sing, which is valid in today’s overabundance of thoughtful, artistic, challenging theatre. It was half an hour of cheesy enjoyment, and if there was anything wrong, it was that it was not long enough.

Pack Shot - Greatest Video Hits

New York, NY (July 30, 2012)—Over three hours long on two DVDs, one of the greatest visual bands in rock history will get their due on August 28 when Eagle Rock Entertainment, the world leader in visual music, releases Greatest Video Hits by Queen [Pre-book order date August 3, MSRP $19.98].

Upgraded digitally in DTS 5.1 Surround Sound, with added commentary from lead guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, this 2DVD set packages Queen’s pioneering and groundbreaking video history into a seamless whole.
33 videos deep, this is the first time that this collection will be released in one package.

Heavy on the early days, the first disc spotlights Queen in the 1970s, when the music video as an art form began to emerge. It includes the iconic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions,” as well as “Flash,” from the 1980 sci-fi film Flash Gordon. From the freezing backyard shoots of “We Will Rock You” and “Spread Your Wings,” to the visual masterpiece that accompanies “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Queen was already showing off the various ways that they visually wanted to represent their music.

The 1980 years are represented on Disc 2, from 1982’s Hot Space album through 1989’s The Miracle. With the advent of MTV in the US, Queen proved they could be as creative visually as they were on record. The ’84 “Radio Ga Ga” video was hailed by both film and music critics alike for its referencing of the original 1927 cinematic milestone Metropolis by Fritz Lang. From the spoofing of Coronation Street in “I Want To Break Free,” to children replacing the band members in “The Miracle,” Queen put their stamp on the music video in the best way they knew how – offering something fresh and different every time.

Queen burned so bright it created a legacy that continues today. From its self-titled 1973 debut to its fitting finale 1995’s Made In Heaven, the band set precedents within rock music that will never be equaled. Singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist Freddie Mercury (1946-1991), bassist John Deacon, May and Taylor meshed like magic and the results will be seen, heard and deeply felt on August 28.

Eagle Rock will also release the Freddie Mercury documentary The Great Pretender on DVD and Blu-ray September 25.

Eagle Rock Entertainment is the largest producer and distributor of music programming for DVD, Blu-Ray, TV, Audio and Digital Media in the world. Eagle works directly alongside talent to produce top quality, High Definition and 3D programs, both concerts and documentaries, including The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Queen, The Doors, Jeff Beck, U2, Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney and Ozzy Osbourne. In a musical montage, as part of the Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremony on Friday evening, due homage was paid to Queen with a video clip of Bohemian Rhapsody - projected onto scenery - a huge house in the middle of the stadium.

Many of the dancers wore harlequin leotards and wielded cut-off microphones, a la Freddie Mercury, and the accompanying film clip not only showed the famous Wayne's World car scene, but also the addition of an actor 'family', sat on their sofas, head-banging to the music and wearing 3-D glasses. Members of the cast air-guitared in the aisles surrounded by 3-D bespectaled audience members, giving a nod to Brian May's playing prowess and love of 3-D movies and photography. Coincidentally (or not), Brian happened to be on his way to a 3-D Convention in California at that time.

Today (7/26) is Queen drummer Roger Taylor’s 63rd birthday. In his over four decades of making music and performing live, the rocker has visited many a country. You may think the crowds in the various places responded differently to the band’s music, but as Roger told us, folks all over the world loved their songs the same.

ROGER TAYLOR: “The strange thing is that as I look back and remember all the different tours, when we’d be doing South America or the States or Europe or Japan or somewhere, actually, most of it, there was almost no difference between audiences. American audiences have always been great for us.” (AUDIO HERE)

No matter where you are, you can soon see some of Queen’s amazing videos. The band has announced plans to put out their Greatest Video Hits collections as one set. It’s due out on August 28th.

· TIDBIT: Roger is responsible for four of the band’s hits: “Radio Ga Ga,” “A Kind of Magic,” “The Invisible Man” and “These are the Days of Our Lives.”
· TALKING POINT: What kind of differences do you note when in another countr?

Roger TaylorMUSIC WEEK
17 Jul 2012

He joins the Academy alongside Patron for Industry, music executive Nigel Elderton, and Patron for Education, Lord Lingfield. Surrey resident Taylor cut the ribbon last year on the Academy's 80-seat Roger Taylor Zildjian Studio where he delivered a master class to ACM students and donated Queen memorabilia to display in the performance studio.

Taylor said: "I am delighted and honoured to be a patron of the Academy of Contemporary Music. Amazing places like this didn't exist when we were learning to be a group. I can't imagine the impact it would have had: I guess we would have been a whole lot better. I wish all students at least some of the luck, life and career that I have had!"

Julia Leggett, executive director at ACM, said: "Roger embodies everything about ACM, from his passion for performing, to the talent and hard graft on which he has built his astonishing career. Roger is a musical icon who our students and staff really look up to. We are incredibly proud to have him on board."

ACM UK alone is home to 1,200 full-time and 400 part-time students. With additional campuses across Europe, South Africa and the US, high-profile alumni include Amelle Berrabah (Sugababes) and current number one album artist Newton Faulkner.

Queen in Kerrang! 25 July 2012Bear in mind - this is just one person's opinion...

Click opposite for larger

The Queen love is clearly still abundant though; with everyone from Iron Man Tony Iommi to weatherman Michael Fish attending this series of Hammersmith Apollo shows.

Tonight, Adam's powerful contributions work best on the more playful (Fat Bottomed Girls) and mournful (Somebody To Love) of the rockers' oeuvre...

... next a climactic run of rock's greatest anthems: We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. More moving, however, is the moment in which past and present are aligned, as Adam trades lines with a piano-playing Freddie (on a video screen) for Bohemian Rhapsody. And it's Adam who nails why Queen should keep going. "This is history," he says with a flurry of his arms, "and these…" he points to Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor "… are the professors of rock." He's right, and that's why - empowered by a semingly unlikely vocalist - the show must go on.

Sir Elton John has revealed he should be dead from Aids like his friends Freddie Mercury or Rock Hudson.

'By all rights I shouldn't be here today,' he said. 'I should be dead – six foot under in a wooden box.

'I should have contracted HIV in the 1980s and died in the 1990s, just like Freddie Mercury, just like Rock Hudson. Every day I wonder, how did I survive?'

Britain's Olympians struggled to hide their bemusement yesterday when they were welcomed to the Athletes’ Village by a troupe of jesters. Team GB found themselves surrounded by dozens of dancers speaking in tongue and hooting while ringing bicycle bells and blowing whistles. Poems were read in French and performers wearing pom-poms on their heads jumped around and span in circles to the tune of ‘I want to ride my bicycle’.

Elton John, Simon Cowell call on Government to act over piracy
24 July 2012 by Tim Ingham

Music icons including Roger Daltrey, Sir Elton John, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Pete Townshend have written a joint letter to the Prime Minister calling for a swift implementation of the DEA - and for No.10 to put pressure on search engines to help hurt piracy. The letter comes as preparations for London 2012 kick into gear, following an IOC ceremony at the Royal Opera House last night. It arrives the week after BPI CEO Geoff Taylor told the BBC's Newsnight that Google must de-list search results for torrent sites that faciliate illegal downloads.

The letter reads:

Dear Prime Minister,

As the world’s focus turns to the UK this summer, there is an opportunity to stimulate growth in sectors where the UK has a competitive edge. Our creative industries represent one such sector, which creates jobs at twice the speed of the rest of the economy.

Britain’s share of the global music market is higher than ever with UK artists, led by Adele, breaking through to global stardom. As a digitally advanced nation whose language is spoken around the world, the UK is well positioned to increase its exports in the digital age. Competition in the creative sector is in talent and innovation, not labour costs or raw materials.

We can realise this potential only if we have a strong domestic copyright framework, so that UK creative industries can earn a fair return on their huge investments creating original content. Illegal activity online must be pushed to the margins. This will benefit consumers, giving confidence they are buying safely online from legal websites.

The simplest way to ensure this would be to implement swiftly the long overdue measures in the Digital Economy Act 2010; and to ensure broadband providers, search engines and online advertisers play their part in protecting consumers and creators from illegal sites.

We are proud of our cultural heritage and believe that we and our sector can play a much bigger role in supporting UK growth. To continue to create world beating creative content, we need a little bit of help from our friends.

Yours sincerely,

Simon Cowell

MetropolisIn 1984, Oscar-winning composer Giorgio Moroder (Top Gun, Midnight Express, Flashdance) reintroduced Fritz Lang’s 1927 science fiction epic METROPOLIS to a new generation of moviegoers. He colourised scenes, added new subtitles, plus a throbbing rock soundtrack to Lang’s iconic imagery. Featuring songs from some of the biggest stars of the early MTV era: Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Adam Ant, Bonnie Tyler, Loverboy, Jon Anderson and others, it became a dramatic vehicle for Moroder’s visionary music and a beautiful retro-futurist timepiece. Through faithfully maintaining Lang’s intriguing and timeless storyline, today, it is this version of METROPOLIS that first comes to mind for millions around the world.

Eureka Entertainment proudly present the UK DVD Premiere of Giorgio Moroder Presents: METROPOLIS, to be released in Limited Edition DVD SteelBook and for streaming from 23 July 2012.

A Life in Pictures

Freddie Mercury The Great Pretender

Published in hardback by Goodman, 3rd September 2012, £25

An illustrated portrait of the legendary showman’s life, published to coincide with
Freddie For A Day, the annual awareness and fundraising event in aid of the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

Freddie Mercury is a man who has left such a fantastic legacy of iconic songs and sublime performances that he will live forever. This official book celebrates the colourful life of the legendary showman: as a child growing up in Zanzibar; as a singer in the legendary rock band Queen; as a solo artist; and above all captures him as one of the 20th century’s foremost popular, cultural icons.
Freddie’s life is recounted in insightful text and captivating photographs, from the most recognised to the very rare. Fans are given unprecedented access to all areas of The Great Pretender’s world.

Also included is an hour-long CD that contains a rare, revealing interview with Westwood One “Off The Record” radio host Mary Turner, recorded in the 1980s, in which he candidly discusses all aspects of his life and stardom.

Created and Designed by Richard Gray
Photographer and graphic designer Richard Gray has been behind some of the best recognised Queen imagery of the past 26 years. Having studied at the London College of Printing, Gray entered the music world working in the late 70s to early 80s as assistant to the legendary music photographer Gered Mankowitz. Among his early album designs was ‘Lionheart’ for Kate Bush. In the early 80s Gray worked with David Bowie on the brochure for the ‘Serious Moonlight Tour’ and designed the ‘Sing Blue Silver’ book for Duran Duran. He was later asked by Harvey Goldsmith to design the poster and programme for ‘Live Aid’ with Bob Geldof. At this time he met the Queen team and began working with the band in early 1986 on the ‘A Kind Of Magic’ album. As well as designing album and singles covers, Gray also photographed Queen on stage at the end of their last concert with Freddie and shot the last portrait taken of Freddie (both included in this book). He created the image for the album ‘Made In Heaven’. His most recent projects for the band include the Carlton book ‘40 Years of Queen’ and the Hal Leonard book ‘Queen: The Complete Illustrated Lyrics’.

Text by Sean O’Hagan
Sean O’Hagan was named British Interviewer of the Year in the British Press Awards 2003 for his work with footballer Roy Keane and the musician Brian Wilson. In 2011, O’Hagan won the 2011 J Dudley Johnston aAward from The Royal Photographic Society for what they described as “major achievement in the field of photographic criticism”.

About Freddie For A Day
Freddie For A Day was started in 2010 as a means to engage the public in remembering the late Queen frontman around the date of his birthday and at the same time raise funds for the work of the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the charity founded in 1992 in Freddie Mercury’s name by Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor and manager Jim Beach. The MPT has quietly got on with its work of helping AIDS charities all over the world and to date has given away over 15 million dollars to over 300 charities in its global work in the fight against HIV/AIDS. With the continued support of the members of Queen and fans and friends around the world, the MPT continues to grow and keep Freddie Mercury’s legacy alive. The public embraced the FFAD idea so positively that it has now become an annual worldwide event. www.freddieforaday.com

The Great Pretender DVD and Blu-ray: Eagle Rock Entertainment. Released 24 September. Created by the same team behind last year’s widely acclaimed “Queen: Days of Our Lives” BBC documentary, “The Great Pretender” in similar vein presents a compelling insight into its subject matter, unearthing previously undiscovered or rarely seen footage and presented for the first time in High Definition. Produced and directed by Rhys Thomas, the programme uses extensive archive footage to reveal more than ever before the inside story of Freddie’s life and career and the solo projects he worked on outside of Queen, including rare interviews with Freddie, concerts, video shoots and personal material, much of it being seen for the first time, along with newly filmed contributions from fellow Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, Queen manager Jim Beach, soprano Montserrat Caballé, composers David Arnold and Mike Moran, lyricist Tim Rice, comedian and lifelong fan Matt Lucas and many more.

Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender - bookFreddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé:
“Barcelona –Special Edition” CD. Island Records. Released 3 September. 25 Twenty-five years after the original release of the lead single, Queen singer Freddie Mercury’s most self-defining and personal work, his ‘Barcelona’ album, recorded in collaboration with Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé, has a special re-release in an entirely newly orchestrated re-working. One of the most audacious and ground-breaking musical collaborations of the 80s, ‘Barcelona’ was for Freddie the embodiment of his long held fantasy of combining rock and opera. The re-created ‘Barcelona’ album is being hailed as the version Mercury would have wanted to make at the time had he felt able to work with a full symphony orchestra. This 2012 special edition replaces producer Mike Moran’s synthesised arrangements, with a full symphonic orchestral score,  performed by the 80-piece FILMharmonic Orchestra, Prague, one of the most sought after recording orchestras in Central Europe, featuring leading members from Czech foremost orchestras (Czech Philharmonic, Prague Symphony).
