Freddie Mercury is a hard act to follow, there’s no doubt about that. The Queen frontman possessed one of the greatest voices in rock, and anyone who’s seen him live at his peak in the seventies can testify that he was a truly riveting performer. Mercury’s death from AIDS in 1991, at the age of 45, didn’t stop Queen from touring, but it took them a while to get back on track. It wasn’t until 2005 that the band ventured out again as Queen + Paul Rodgers, with the former singer from Free, Bad Company, and the Firm joining Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor on stage (Queen bassist John Deacon opted out of the gig). Now May and Taylor have recruited a frontman exactly half Rodgers’ age–32-year-old American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert–to carry on the Queen flame, and judging by his showing at Rogers Arena last night, it wasn’t a bad call.

The concert opened with the multitracked guitar instrumental “Procession” from 1974′s Queen II before a huge curtain bearing the majestic Queen logo was pulled away to coincide with May’s delivery of the monster guitar riff from “Now I’m Here”, a heavy rocker from the 1974 Sheer Heart Attack album. The raucous vibe continued with another Sheer Heart Attack number, the frenzied “Stone Cold Crazy”, before the familiar bass line from the band’s best-selling single, the Deacon-penned “Another One Bites the Dust”, made its presence known. May took the opportunity to inject some wild fuzz sounds into the tune via his “Red Special”, the reddish-brown guitar custom-built by him and his dad.

By the time Queen was halfway through its fourth number, “Fat Bottomed Girls”, it was obvious that Lambert’s vocals lack that special something that made Mercury’s–or even Rodgers’–stand out. But the openly gay singer’s flamboyant performing style, charming audience interaction, and heavily accessorized glam-rock look went a long way toward making up for the relative blandness of his voice.

“Whaddya think of the new boy?” asked May after a performance of the 1981 Queen/David Bowie collaboration “Under Pressure”, and the resounding applause made it clear that Lambert had impressed the vast majority of the crowd. Still, whenever Queen brought Mercury’s vocals back via video, as it did briefly on “Love of My Life” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”, you could tell their original crooner was in another league altogether.

And no matter how many fans Lambert won over during the night, he couldn’t really wrest the spotlight away from the mighty May. The sheer joy that the 66-year-old rocker emanates–whether in straightforward boogie mode (“Tie Your Mother Down”), while dabbling in sci-fi skiffle (’39), or during pseudo-operatic excursions (“Bohemian Rhapsody”)–is a wonder to behold.

Adam and Brian - CalgaryWhen it was first announced that Adam Lambert of American Idol fame would be stepping into Freddie Mercury’s famed jumpsuit for a tour with the band legendary band Queen, the rock world didn’t know exactly how to respond. The similarities are there, sure. Both men are good looking, flamboyant, gay, and have ridiculous vocal ranges. But while Adam Lambert found success on a televised talent show, Freddie Mercury and the rest of Queen earned their success by playing clubs and small houses before skyrocketing to astronomical success in the 1970s and 80s. Mercury shaped his stage persona into a master of showmanship over time, and at the height of Queen’s popularity, he could command hundreds of thousands of fans with a simple mic stand. Just WATCH his performance at 1985′s Live Aid at Wembley Stadium. Legendary.

Adam Lambert couldn’t even win the talent contest that he was part of. That was the one huge question having over this tour: Could Lambert match that unmistakable stage presence?

So far the early word is that yes, Lambert has been an excellent stand-in for what is truly a Queen concert. In the early 2000s, Paul Rodgers of Bad Company toured with the band, but fans didn’t quite take to Rodgers lack of range and showmanship and the arrangement fell apart. Lambert, according to reviews, is absolutely channeling Mercury, while still keeping true to what makes Adam Lambert appealing in his own right. As the tour treks across North America, there have even been calls for the band, which consists of guitarist and songwriter Brian May and Roger Taylor on drums, both original members (Bassist John Deacon retired in 1997), and Lambert to cut a new album of songs.

The Queen + Adam Lambert tour has been so successful that the band has added additional tour dates to accommodate fans wanting to hear the classic Queen songs like “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” played by May and Taylor and sang with the proper vocal ranges that Lambert can undoubtedly hit.

Adam Lambert hasn’t joined the band permanently, and is still working on his own music. Even he knows that he cannot replace a performer like Freddie Mercury, but in an interview with Rolling Stone, Lambert admits that he’s able to honor Mercury and still add his own flair.

Lambert explained:

“It’s not an easy feat. I think a lot of the apprehension has faded because we’ve done this a number of times in the past couple of years. That’s not to suggest I’m getting cocky at all, because I will never compare to Freddie Mercury. He’s one in a million. At this point, I know how to strike a balance between honoring the way these songs were originally meant to be sung and my own instincts, my own choices.”

And as the tour goes into its last month in North America, fans have been given a rare opportunity to see a legendary band with a frontman who absolutely knows what he’s doing, and the tour has been a raging success because of it. Thanks to Adam Lambert, this is as close to classic Queen that many younger fans will ever get.

Guitarist backs Adam Lambert to the hilt with a 20-plus song set didn’t miss a moment in the band’s history

For all the operatic flourishes, U.K. dance hall ditties and disco funk offs, Queen was always about epic arena rockers. The English quartet’s canon is loaded with the crunchy goodness every hard rock act wants. Add in the unparalleled vocal chops of the late Farrokh “Freddie” Bulsara, a.k.a. Mercury, and it’s no surprise why Queen ranks with the Beatles in all-time sales.

Brian May - VancouverMercury’s passing from AIDS-related complications in 1991 put the remaining active members in quite a fix. Who were guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor going to hire to fill the spot? Legendary Free and Bad Company shouter Paul Rodgers was a marquee name but lacked any of the required range and both the tour and studio albums were weak. Enter American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert, 32, a guy with serious range and the requisite glam sense to do the flamboyant material justice.

From the opening quartet of Now I’m Here, Sheer Heart Attack and Fat Bottomed Girls, the singer was on. But May’s guitar-tistry overshadowed all. The PhD in Astrophysics was showcasing his doctorate of riffology at Rogers Arena and the lecture was brilliant.

Lambert hit his stride with Lap Of the Gods/Seven Seas of Rhye, bringing his own soaring range to hit notes almost as high as his platform boots. Somebody To Love was huge, right down to his bluesy take on the final chorus. The singalong to May’s solo rendition of Love Of My Life proved this was an audience of faithful fans. A good thing as the guitarist honestly noted he isn’t a singer. Guess that explains why footage of Mercury played for the final chorus.

May followed with a folky ‘39 and Taylor rasped out These Are The Days Of Our Lives as more vintage footage played across the screens. Even on this somewhat twee number, May dropped some killer licks.

The Taylors — Roger and son Rufus — provided the short drum solo before Lambert returned to wail through Under Pressure and it was back to the races.

But not before the singer urged around of applause for Mercury and introduced a new song, Love Kills, to be featured on the coming new Queen album. Assembled with old recordings of Mercury, the idea seems a tad weird. But if the roar for the late entertainer was any indication, the market is there.

The 20-plus song set didn’t miss a moment in the band’s history and certainly delivered the hits. While I would have relished Seaside Rendevous, you don’t complain when the version of Don’t Stop Me now bounces that hard. That song and the Show Must Go On might be apropos to Queen version 2014 on the whole. Their show was a far sight better than the perfunctory cash grabs many of their peers are presenting.

SHOULD WE EVALUATE QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT THE SAME WAY WE EVALUATE IGGY AZAELIA?

The band Queen was founded forty-four years ago. It took a few years—and albums—for it to become one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world. By the mid-1980s, Queen was breaking concert attendance and sales records. Last week, two original members of Queen—Brian May and Roger Taylor—launched a tour with Adam Lambert filling in for the late Freddie Mercury. Queen joined the likes of the Rolling Stones and ZZ Top in keeping their brand alive on the stage well into their fifth and sixth decades.

Reviews of the performance were mostly ecstatic, but some critics have called for the band to create some new Queen music together, rather than reverting to releasing more albums fronted by Freddie Mercury. Does the reconfigured Queen need to make new music to be considered effective? At the heart of this issue is a question that matters not just for bands, but for any organization: Should we evaluate the effectiveness of a mature organization using the same criteria we use for upstarts? Do we judge Queen with Adam Lambert using the same metric with which we assess newcomers, like Iggy Azaelia or Imagine Dragons?

According to a classic study by management professors Robert E. Quinn and Kim Cameron, “Organizational Life Cycles and Shifting Criteria of Effectiveness: Some Preliminary Evidence,” the answer is no. The way we should define and evaluate the effectiveness of an organization depends on what stage of the organizational life cycle it is in.

A new musical act is like a new firm. It is in its entrepreneurial phase. Its primary focus is creating, innovating, acquiring resources and gaining external support. For companies this means securing their first customers and investors. For a band, it means getting their first few million YouTube views and song streams, joining major festival lineups and getting radio play.

For some bands this growth eventually leads to signing with a record label, which can usher them to the second stage of the organizational life cycle: survival. This is the stage of development where the band gels as a team and develops the cohesion and commitment that will carry them through the challenges of growth. At this stage, according to Quinn and Cameron, evaluations of effectiveness should be based on whether the group has coalesced around a common vision and is committed to that vision.

Next comes a period of success. In this phase, companies turn toward sustaining their momentum and productivity. For Queen, the period between the mid-1970s and the mid-1980s was such a period. During this phase, effectiveness should be measured by the extent to which the organization maintains its position and meets the goals it has set for itself. Any company currently succeeding in the market is concerned with sustaining its success, whether by increasing efficiency or by formalizing its procedures.

The final stage is renewal. It involves scouting for new opportunities to avert decline. Queen’s current tours, like the tours of their peers, seek to take advantage of the relatively new market for nostalgia, to preserve their legacy and, in many cases, introduce their music to new audiences. “We’ve played to some of your mothers and fathers,” said Queen guitarist Brian May in the Chicago concert, “And some of your grandchildren, I’m sure.”

In this mature phase of Queen, we should not evaluate them as we did when they were in their entrepreneurial phase. We leave discussions of innovativeness, creativity, and freshness of voice to artists who are just starting out. Instead, we evaluate Queen on their ability to adapt to the contemporary musical landscape and provide an experience that their audience values. And on that front, Queen + Adam Lambert have delivered.

In 1967 - The Left-Handed Marriage Abbey Road session took place on 28 June 1967, when Left Handed Marriage were joined by Brian and 1984's Dave Dilloway, who was drafted in to play bass. Two further tracks were cut: they reworked "I Need Time", and a new song called "Appointment". At this stage, there was more talk of issuing a record, this time a single, and a release date of August was even discussed. This never materialised either, and again 7" acetates are all that remain. A change of video director for the second album brought us into the clutches of Howard Greenhalgh who has remained a long-time friend so the experience was a good one! Still buzzing from Brian May sauntering into our studio and offering to put a guitar solo down on this track, we couldn't wait to get this track out and get going with the second album. Stop frame animation, cookie ideas (like putting a salad drainer on Tich's head) and a similar cutting style to the LIAB vidz of the past, kept this video in our genre... Living In A Box

In 1998 - Brian May wrote letter for Summer 1999 Fan Club magazine - stating himself, Roger Taylor, John Deacon & Jim Beach had had a few Queen business meetings. He announced the forthcoming GHIII collection and a "secret" project with Roger ("Under Pressure" Rah Mix).
