Touch down. Los Angeles

After an 11 hour flight, three films and two bags of Maynard's Midget Gems, I was picked up by Eric, a very cool Irish/Puerto Rican guy and within minutes we were best buddies; talking music, American history and shouting out quotes from Wayne's World and Jaws – I love Americans. I was heading straight to rehearsals, no point in mucking around I say, let's get it on.

However, before we get to the rock n’ roll, I wanted to go back to the flight for a moment, and the films I watched, they had triggered some Freddie thoughts. The Dallas Buyers Club, actually as recommended by Roger's PA Justine a few months ago, was the most obvious, with Matthew McConaughey's stunning performance as the real-life AIDS patient Ron Woodroof. Set during the same period in which Freddie had to deal with HIV/AIDS situation, it again brought home to me the work I do with the Mercury Phoenix Trust and how much has been achieved since the mid-80s. I am not going to review the film for you though, watch it yourself, have a think and then donate to us! ;)

The second film I watched was a little lighter thankfully and was called '20 Feet From Stardom' and concentrated on backing singers. It was a really great insight into a often overlooked roll and told the stories of several sensational, yet little known singers and how they found their place in the music industry, their role on records and on stage and why they didn't make it a lead vocalists. Most of the singers came from gospel backgrounds and could produce soaring vocals that were just so uplifting...you know where I am going he don't you? The Golden Boy, Somebody To Love and Let Me Live. I just kept thinking what would Freddie have produced as solo artist if he was still with us...did he have a full on gospel album in him? Freddie backed with a gospel choir...imagine the power!

I also flipped to see what the music options on the in-flight entertainment - top of the A-Z list? 'A Night At The Opera'. It's all a bit too spooky, but it does make you smile and feel that little bit proud.

Anyway back to business, sorry about that diversion! The rehearsal hangar, and yes, it is actually an aircraft hangar with a short runway, confirmed once again Queen do big, really big. The stage is at one end behind some large hanging black curtains, the images that leaked do it no justice...it's bloody HUGE. I picked up with the production team, grabbed my desk, my AAA crew pass and started to take a proper look around. I didn't get far. I stopped at catering.

Saw Brian, gave a quick hug, he said he was feeling good and that it was "all coming together" and it certainly sounded that way when I watched the run through of the iHeart Radio set, of which I can reveal there is one track they are playing that will surprise EVERYONE. I have also seen the main set list and there are a few more lovely additions to what they played in 2012. I got that 'fan' tingle again; I can't wait to see this in Chicago at the opening show in a packed arena.

I had managed to go 25 hours straight without sleep and it was time to retire, until...

"Fancy a beer back at the hotel?” Silly question.

I ended up in a bar with Justin, Pete, Nigel (RT's drum tech) and Rob and Kerry, the Welsh comedy duo from hell, watching some HUGE ice hockey game between LA and New York, it seemed to go on for an eternity, but it was very entertaining and the place exploded when LA scored the winner in overtime. For the next five minutes I found myself high 5-ing complete strangers shouting "Yeah Baby!” much to my own amusement. Only God knows what would have happened if New York had scored...

Today, Saturday, is the tech rehearsal, no band, just a basic run through, health and safety bits and prep...all quite low key, which works for me as I didn't get to bed until 1am and had to be here at 8.30 this morning.

So, 30 hours with no sleep was the final total, can I keep this up? We shall see, the buzz of rock n'roll, that's all I need right now.

13 Jun 2014 by Andy Revill

It won’t have escaped your notice that there’s a football tournament going on in Brazil right about now. And, true to form, there are a slew of World Cup songs doing the rounds. But don’t waste your time with run-of-the-mill mediocrity – embrace the bizarre. Andy Revill takes a look at the weirdest World Cup songs in football history.

[Arranged in ascending order]

1. Rik Mayall’s “Noble England”

Rik Mayall's Noble England (OFFICIAL VIDEO) - http://youtu.be/oMAFme1hBH0

The late, great Rik Mayall was a man of many talents, but who knew that the noble Englishman had a hand in a World Cup song? No sir, not I. But it just might top the charts this week thanks to a hugely popular online campaign, launched in light of the comedian’s tragic death. This song succeeds on a number of levels: it’s catchy, it’s not annoying and, frankly, Mayall’s reading of Shakespeare’s Henry V is as inspirational as any football manager’s halftime team talk. This isn’t just weird – it’s superb.

2. The Village People’s “Far Away In America”
3. Placido Domingo’s “Mundial 82″
4. Italia ’90s “Un’estata Italia”
5. Iran’s “Immortal Iran”
6. Fat Les’s “Vindaloo”

7. Crazy Frog’s “We Are The Champions”
I’m not even sure what to say about this one. Remember the crazy frog? Well, apparently he released a World Cup song for Germany 2006. It’s a terrible, terrible butchering of a beloved Queen anthem.

Crazy Frog - We Are The Champions (Ding a Dang Dong) - http://youtu.be/S_IAqwrvEuU

8. U.S.A’s “Red White and Blue”
9. “The Macarooney”
10. Shakira’s “Dare la la la”

Adam Lambert on stage with Brian MayTORONTO SUN
14 June 2014 by Jane Stevenson

'It'll probably be a long show and very loud,' guitarist Brian May promises.

We are the Champions again. And, quite possibly, for “one last time.”

British rock act Queen are playing North American arenas this summer with American Idol season eight runner up Adam Lambert as frontman for their first tour together on this side of the pond.

And the two remaining Queen members say it could be the last time they hit the road.

“We haven’t done it for a long time and I don’t know how long we’re going to be capable of doing this kind of thing,” said Queen guitarist Brian May, 66, down the line from New York City with Queen drummer Roger Taylor, 64, and Lambert, 32, also on the line. “At the moment it is that feeling, yeah, ‘One last swing around, one last gallop,’ and we’ll see how it goes.”

The trio first appeared together in 2009 on Idol, and again at the 2011 at the MTV European Music Awards before a short 2012 European tour and a seminal performance at the iHeart Radio Festival in Las Vegas in 2013. The upcoming 24-date trek, which kicks off in Chicago June 19, hits seven Canadian cities.

“It really felt like Adam has a great chemistry with us and delivers our songs in his [in]imitable way with his extraordinary and voice,” said Taylor recalling the Sin City performance.

May added fans get to hear the impressive Queen back catalogue with new life breathed into it. “Of course, we’re taking (late singer) Freddie (Mercury’s) material, and it’s alive, it’s kicking, it’s not a fossil, and all the stuff we worked on together, it is still organically growing, and so I think to take Freddie’s material out on tour as well as our own is a great opportunity.”

Certainly, the presence of so many Canadian dates would seem to indicate demand for Queen, who formed in 1970 in London, remains high.

“I think Canada’s always been fantastic for Queen, we have many great memories there, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, etc., but the actual routing of the tour really is in the hands of the agents and the management,” said Taylor.

Joked May: “We just have a map of North America and a set of darts.”

Added Taylor: “And a blindfold.” Fans can expect a 90-minute to two hour extravaganza of hits and Taylor says the tour production will be “spectacular but we don’t have the set list mapped out yet but I’m hoping it’ll be a moveable feast.”

“It’ll probably be a long show and very loud,” added May.

For his part Lambert – who is also working on his third solo album in Sweden – grew up idolizing original Queen singer Freddie Mercury, who had a flamboyant stage presence and four octave range before tragically dying from complications from AIDS in 1991 at the age of 45.

Needless to say, Lambert feels like has big shoes to fill and considers it an honour to try. “It’s surreal,” he said. “Having auditioned with Bohemian Rhapsody on American Idol, and this weird full circle gorgeous dream come true. When we did our first (tour) run, like giving a full set, it was definitely was intimidating. The idea that I would be in front of Queen die-hard fans and I was taking on a large chunk of the catalogue and it was a short time to put it together. And we did it and I think it turned out really, really beautifully and then when the Vegas thing happened I feel like it really grounded itself a little bit more.”

Before Lambert, Queen has previously toured with fellow Brit Paul Rodgers, 64, of Bad Company and Free on and off between 2005-2009.

“Paul has one of the greatest rock voices but it’s more blues and soul orientated I would have thought,” said Taylor. “I would say, with all due respect to Paul, that Adam is more suited to a lot of our material and whereas we had great tours with Paul, I think Adam is more naturally at home with us.”

Added May: “Yeah, I think the styles match more closely in a sense but we had a great time with Paul no doubt about it and it kind of stretched it to a new place and I think a thoroughly good experience. But Adam is really, like us, he has many, many colours, so we can explore some of those strange excursions that Queen likes to.”

Lambert says he has to pinch himself sometimes when he realizes who he’s on stage with. “Sometimes I stop and I go, ‘These guys are responsible for these iconic songs.’ The songs that Queen has released, everybody knows these songs, these songs are part of the fabric of people’s lives so getting to be on stage with them and bringing these songs back to life and seeing the reactions on fans’ faces that’s what this is all about,” he said.

May laughed: “He thinks, ‘What am I doing on stage with these old codgers?’”

Queen guitarist Brian May says the band’s late singer Freddie Mercury would have approved of Adam Lambert stepping into his shoes for the band’s latest North American jaunt. “I think the only regret Freddie would have is that he didn’t get to work with Adam,” he joked. “They would get on like a house on fire. You know that Adam has a great respect for Freddie and I know if Freddie saw Adam perform he’d have a great respect for Adam too ‘cause Adam has a matchless instrument and he’s a great performer so Freddie would absolutely be into it, I have no doubt.”

Needless to say rock bands resurrected by different singers is nothing new.

Laptop and passport

13 June 2014 by Nick Weymouth

"I would love to be involved...just for the opening show even."

That was pretty much the pitch to management to get on the plane for the Queen + Adam Lambert North American tour. There were a few other lines of personal endorsement of course and what I could offer to the jaunt, but I kept it pretty simple, 12 years on the job and you hope that you might have some credit in the bank.

"The whole tour? Ah, I would love to, but..."

Having two young kids and a wife just starting a new job a few weeks before the tour kicked off...I would have come home to an empty house. However, after a minute or so of negotiation (see or being told what was on offer), we settled on the first six shows and that I was it, I was officially 'crew'. My online position had been cemented as part of the touring team, plus, I agreed on "a few other jobs that might come up", I was in. Rock n' Roll. Have you seen 'Almost Famous'? That was I.

Two days later, I get an e-mail headed "Production Assistant: Job Spec". My role had been expanded; those "few extra jobs" were a lengthy list. Hell, I didn't care I was on the plane, and bus as it turns out. Now to tell the wife…

It was back to business of course for the next six weeks, the ‘Queen Machine’ was thundering on, the Extravaganza was touring, We Will Rock You closing, launching the Official Queen Podcast series, plans for the 2014 releases had be produced, presented and agreed, plus of course we were in the business of selling tickets for the expanding tour.

In between all that I was slowly planning 'my tour', it was all was coming together: confirming flights, setting up time to talk to Roger and Brian on the road, meeting Jil the Tour Production Coordinator, would I be able to meet a friend in Chicago? What bag I am taking? DO I need new underwear and socks? How is the childcare going to work out? I am missing Father's Day, the kids have chickenpox, the wife thinking I was heading out on some 1970s sex and drugs magical mystery tour...real stuff.

The Queen Team meeting on Wednesday 11th was great, we rattled through several projects and made some decisions and threw around some great ideas. 2014 has been and will be busy, 2015, well the fun just doesn't stop, there will be a whole lot more to enjoy as a Queen fan all being well. The imminent tour was of course discussed, I was calm, but a wry smile appeared across my face as Jim Beach packed us all off at the end of the meeting.

"Have fun Nick, see you in Chicago!

I am finishing this off, just as I am waiting for my flight to LA from Heathrow's Terminal 3. My friend and colleague Justin Shirley-Smith, Queen's long serving sound engineer, has just chipped off to catch his earlier flight, so I am officially the last member of the crew to leave the UK for the tour. I am looking forward to hooking up with the Queen team again and finally meeting my new friends in Adam’s camp and the iHeart Radio team. You just have to keep an eye out for the Pete Malandrone chap...

I know I am lucky to do what I do, but all things I have worked on have led to this and, frankly, I can't wait. So, look out for updates and images from the road on all the Queen channels, the links are all below, blah, blah, blah, I see some images of the stage from the iHeart Radio show have leaked already, shame really, but it just adds to the thrill of it all I say. I just hope I get to watch some of the World Cup.

The 'Once In A Lifetime' Tour, it is exactly that for me too. I'm ready to rock...and to work my ass off.

Right, I am off now to wander around this shopping centre that also doubles as an airport to spend about £50 on stuff I don't really need.

"Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie have topped Rolling Stone's Readers Poll of Greatest Duets of All Time:

Queen - Under Pressure (Official Video) - http://youtu.be/a01QQZyl-_I

Readers' Poll: The 10 Greatest Duets of All Time
"Under Pressure," "Hunger Strike" and your other favorite tunes by two artists

1. Queen and David Bowie, "Under Pressure"
In July 1981, David Bowie headed over to Montreux's Mountain Studio to record a track with Queen. He originally planned on singing on "Cool Cat," but the session didn't gel. Luckily, the four members of Queen and Bowie started jamming on a new piece that soon morphed into "Under Pressure." The whole thing came together within a matter of hours, though there's a dispute to this day over who exactly came up with the iconic bass line. The song became a worldwide hit, though the never performed it together live — even though Bowie's set immediately followed Queen's at Live Aid.

2. Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"
3. Stevie Nicks and Don Henley, "Leather and Lace"
4. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, "Don't Give Up"
5. Elton John and Kiki Dee, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart"
6. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
7. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, "Islands in the Stream"
8. Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder (Temple of the Dog), "Hunger Strike"
9. Sonny and Cher, "I Got You Babe"
10. Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, "Girl From the North Country"

The perfect road trip is America's Route 66, with Queen on the radio and Holly Willoughby in the front seat (but women would prefer David Beckham)

The perfect road trip would involve driving down America's Route 66 and listening to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, with Holly Willoughby and David Beckham as driving companions. But our driving nightmare would be to have former star of The Apprentice Katie Hopkins in the front seat with us.

On the road: America's Route 66 was voted the road trip Britons would most like to take

In fact, when asked to name their best driving songs, nine out of 10 of the top 10 were from the 1970s and 1980s, with Queen taking both first and second place, with Don't Stop Me Now and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Meatloaf, Journey, The Eagles and Abba also made it on to the list, with the only recent song being Kings of Leon's Sex On Fire, which took seventh place.

1. Holly Willoughby
2. David Beckham
3. Daniel Craig
4. Kate Middleton
5. Boris Johnson
1. Katie Hopkins
2. Bruce Forsyth
3. Boris Johnson
4. Nigel Farage
5. Harry Styles

The survey, conducted by Mini to celebrate its new car, also found that America's historic Route 66, which crosses the country from Chicago to Santa Monica, in California, was the road trip Britons most wanted to take, followed by the winding roads of Italy's Amalfi Coast.

1. Don’t stop me now - Queen
2. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

3. Bat out of hell - Meatloaf
4. Don’t stop Believin’ – Journey
5. Dancing Queen – Abba
6. Hotel California – The Eagles
7. Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon
8. Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
9. Driving Home for Christmas – Chris Rea
10. I’m Gonna Be (500 miles) – The Proclaimers

Queen was named the nation’s favourite artist overall to play in the car (with 16 per cent of votes), having beaten the likes of Michael Jackson (9 per cent), Fleetwood Mac (8 per cent) and Meatloaf (6 per cent) in the national poll. Their 1978 hit ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ was voted best driving song with a quarter of the votes, and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ claimed number two with 21 per cent of the votes. Londoners favoured Michael Jackson while Scottish respondents voted for Fleetwood Mac and Geordies preferred to play Meatloaf.

ITV’s Holly Willoughby topped the poll as the person we would most like to invite on our fantasy road trip, beating off competition form Kate Middleton, David Beckham and Daniel Craig. David Beckham did however top the poll for women. Holly’s TV nemesis, Katie Hopkins, claimed top of the list for the ultimate nightmare car companion. Others on the nightmare list included Bruce Forsyth, UKIP party leader Nigel Farage and even One Direction's Harry Styles. London Mayor Boris Johnson was listed as a nightmare driving companion overall, although Londoners voted him among their dream driving buddies.

Another hugely successful concert at The Kings pub in All Cannings, Wiltshire today [31 May].

The Troggs opened with old favourites and Paul Young & the Pacaminos really got things going.

The Straits performed some classic songs but Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel stole the afternoon when Steve gave his two thousand pound guitar away for auction. Last we heard it has an offer of 10K on it and Steve even offered to come around to the buyer's house and record a song with them to upload to YouTube.

The night was finished with an amazing set by Sir Bob and The Boomtown Rats.

Once again a little pub in Wiltshire has supplied the most amazing gig and raised bucket loads of cash for Rock against cancer.
I hope that one day Brian will come back again to perform
