THE GUARDIAN
QUEEN STAR DIES AFTER AIDS STATEMENT
From the archive, 25 November 1991
Originally published in the Guardian on 25 November 1991

Freddie Mercury, rock's showman incarnate, died last night, 24 hours after he confirmed he was suffering from Aids. Mercury, lead singer with the band Queen, had become a recluse at his home in Kensington, west London, over the past two years, fuelling speculation that he was suffering from the disease. He was 45.

A brief statement by his publicist, Roxy Meades, said: "Freddie Mercury died peacefully at his home. His death was the result of bronchio pneumonia, brought on by Aids."

Mercury was born Frederick Bulsara in Zanzibar, the son of a Government accountant. He attended Ealing College of Art, then joined Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor to form Queen in 1971. Their debut album was Queen in 1973, followed by Queen II a year later, with a single Seven Seas of Rhye, which made the UK charts. The Sheer Heart Attack album gave them a big hit with Killer Queen. But it was A Night At The Opera which furnished them with a number one hit in the seven-minute Bohemian Rhapsody.

Queen's Greatest Hits remains one of the biggest sellers in rock history. Singles such as We Are The Champions (employed by the Labour Party at its conference this year), and Crazy Little Thing Called Love, plus Mercury's solo efforts such as The Great Pretender, were all hits. The band played stadium concerts to six figure audiences all over the world, with the theatrical Mercury centre-stage. For nearly 20 years he was one of the most flamboyant figures on the British rock scene. His after-show parties went on for days.

As questions began to be asked about his health, he adopted a more sedate lifestyle, which he insisted was more the real Freddie Mercury. He said: "I'm so powerful on stage that I seem to have created a monster. When I'm performing I'm an extrovert, yet inside I'm a completely different man."

In an interview with the Daily Express this month, Mercury said: "I don't really think about when I'm dead or how they are going to remember me. I don't really think about it. It's up to them. When I'm dead who cares? I don't."

On Saturday, Mercury issued a statement saying, "Following enormous conjecture in the press, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have Aids. I felt it correct to keep this information private to date in order to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has now come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth, and I hope everyone will join with me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease."

Queen are really going to let it rock again! The true champions of rock are coming at the end of May 2016 for their only concert in Germany with a spectacular, glamorous production in the Cologne RheinEnergie Stadium. The majestic rock musicians will be appearing on May 27 with Adam Lambert who has led the band to new summits with his perfect stylish mix of rock stage presence, sex appeal and impressive vocal performance.

The captivating combination Queen + Adam Lambert has stimulated euphoric reactions at all of its totally sold-out gigs so far on its world tour in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, South America and Europe. Stage, visual effects, design and engineering combine to form an impressive framework for the Queen + Adam Lambert show, which of course includes all the band’s rock hymns and classics. Adam Lambert makes his mark with a vocal range quite similar to the legendary Freddie Mercury, brilliantly reviving the songs to new life.

Queen, who have enraptured their fans with countless no. 1 hits such as “We Will Rock You”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Are The Champions”, “Killer Queen”, “Somebody To Love”, “A Kind Of Magic”, “Radio Gaga”, “I Want To Break Free” and “The Show Must Go On”, not to mention memorable live appearances, count among the most successful groups of all time. The inimitable band branded its very own unique music style between pomp and pop, hard and art rock. More than 200 million CDs and singles worldwide and 16 million audio carriers in Germany and Austria alone bear testimony to their outstanding drawing power.

Queen have found an exceptional frontman with Adam Lambert who fills the part of the too soon deceased Freddie Mercury to perfection in his own individual way. The live liaison of Queen + Adam Lambert began in 2009 when they performed “We Are The Champions” together in the American Idol Finals. This was followed in 2011 with an appearance at the MTV European Music Awards and one year later the first selected live concerts. In the autumn 2013 Queen and Adam Lambert decided to go on tour together. Since then there have been more than 70 regal appearances and now Queen + Adam Lambert will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their historic Bohemian Rhapsody in Cologne.

Adam Lambert:
Adam Lambert’s debut album For Your Entertainment earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and a worldwide smash hit with ‘Whataya Want From Me’. His second album, Trespassing, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. In 2013, Adam appeared as a guest star on the hit TV series, GLEE and as as a featured vocalist on Avicii’s album ’True’. 24 YEARS SINCE DEAR FREDDIE LEFT US

Painted Soul
Graphic by Jodie Mercury

Twenty-four years since you left us, dear Freddie. - Twenty-four years since your parting words...
"I still love you"
Sure that's still as true today as we still love you.

In our thoughts and memories today. His star never wanes.
His incredible talent and personality surpasses death - left his footprints firmly on this world.
Who would have thought it back then?
He is just, as they say, 'in the next room'.
RIP. x

Having first appeared together on the 2009 American Idol finale, followed with a performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards, Adam Lambert soon became a fixture with Queen, and with the band performed several big concerts and television performances in 2012 and 2013, followed by a fully sold out 24 date US tour in 2014 at the end of which Queen + Adam Lambert received the Band of the Year accolade at the 10th annual Classic Rock Roll of Honour awards as well as being voted Best Live Band of the Year in Ultimate Classic Rock’s year round up reader’s poll.

Queen + Adam Lambert closed 2014 in spectacular style when they were invited to perform an exclusive concert on New Year’s Eve from London, close to the iconic andmark of Big Ben, for a live broadcast on BBC One TV. Queen + Adam Lambert Rock Big Ben Live took place in the build up to the clock striking midnight to see in 2015 and continued after the spectacular, world famous fireworks display along the river Thames. The special was seen by a peak of 12 million people and in the subsequent 24 hours ‘Adam Lambert’ was the top of the trending searches on Google in the UK with more than 500,000 searches for his name.

Early 2015 saw Q + AL return to concerts with 26 sold out shows in 10 countries throughout the UK and Europe taking their critically acclaimed show to France, Austria, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Poland. When the band ended their European tour on 27 February 2015 in Sheffield, UK, they had notched up 67 sold out concert dates across the world in less than a year drawing universally rave reviews: “Queen and Adam Lambert delivered just over two hours of pure sensation straight into the nerves and bones of anyone fortunate enough to witness it.

Freddie may be gone, but he would surely approve.” (Brisbane Times) “Did they rock us? Oh YES!” (New York Daily
News).

More recently, invited back to Brazil’s Rock in Rio festival to headline the September 18, 2015 opening night thirty years after Queen performed the opening and closing at the inaugural festival event in 1985, Queen + Adam Lambert made the most of their passage to the Southern Hemisphere and booked a six date tour of three Latin countries: Brazil, Argentina and Chile, playing stadiums and arenas. The tour sold out in record time and Queen - fronted this time by Lambert - made a triumphant return to the continent which in the 80’s provided them with their biggest concert audiences ever reached: their two 1985 Rock in Rio performances drew a total audience of more than half a million people, the largest paid audience in history.

Adam Lambert speaking to Absolute Radio...

“I did some studying. I felt I really needed to. I was pretty familiar with them, but when I first started working with them, that’s when I went onto the internet and scoured everything.”

On Freddie's Montreal performance....

“He’s running around in shorts, with no shoes on. Watching him in that zone really made me understand him. He just didn’t give a shit. He was like, ‘I’m going to do whatever I want.’ I think he kind of defined what a rock star was to me. He doesn’t actually care – and he’s so fabulous doing it.”

Chester Catholic School students
Chester Catholic High School students during rehearsals for We Will Rock You - The Queen Musical

Students at Chester Catholic High School are busy rehearsing for a forthcoming production of the musical We Will Rock You based on the greatest hits of legendary rock band Queen. The musical features classic songs such as I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love and the title song, We Will Rock You.

Set on Planet Mall in the year 2315, the show tells the story of a world where all musical instruments are banned. GlobalSoft Empire generates the tunes and everybody downloads them. It is an age of Boy Bands and Girl Bands. It is the age of Manufactured Hits. That is until Gallileo, played by Aaron Bladen, breaks free from the laser cells of Killer Queen who rules on Planet Mall. With the help of Scaramouche, played by Maisie McMahon, Galileo embarks on a quest to rediscover the music that once filled the hearts of a nation.

Aaron Bladen (Galileo) said: “I’ve always enjoyed Queen’s songs and I am excited to be given the opportunity of performing them night after night.” Head girl and leading lady Maisie McMahon added: “We Will Rock You has been such a fun show to be a part of and I can’t wait to share all our hard work and entertain audiences with this incredible show.” Maisie McMahon plays Scaramouche.

The cast of 45 talented performers are joined onstage by the We Will Rock You band who bring the iconic music of Queen to life in what promises to be the musical highlight of the year.

Head of performing arts, David Hussin, thanked all the students involved for their commitment and professionalism. He said: “It is genuinely a privilege to work alongside such talented and dedicated young people.”

‘Theory Of Everything’s Anthony McCarten Scripting Freddie Mercury Pic For GK Films; Ben Whishaw In The Wings?
18 November 2015 by Mike Fleming Jr

Anthony McCartenEXCLUSIVE: The pieces are being put back together the pieces of the movie on Queen and the band’s iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury. The project has been adrift since Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out over creative differences with the surviving members of the band. GK Films has hired as its new writer Anthony McCarten, who wrote the terrific script for The Theory Of Everything and got an Oscar nomination doing it. I’m told they are toying with the title Bohemian Rhapsody, the title of one of Queen’s biggest hits and one of the tunes that best demonstrates his singular vocal range. Sony has the right to opt into the project after the studio reads McCarten’s script.

The picture, which had a first draft from Peter Morgan, is still being produced by Graham King’s GK Films with Queen Films. King, who is also producing the untitled Paramount film that Robert Zemeckis will direct with Brad Pitt starring, continues to be the driving force behind this. And the actor they are all still sweet on is Ben Whishaw, who is tearing it up on the screen this fall. He co-starred in the 007 film Spectre, and stars in Suffragette, The Lobster, The Danish Girl and In The Heart Of The Sea.

Nobody would comment for this story, only to tell me there is no deal with Whishaw. But agencies have begun buzzing about this picture again as a plum open directing assignment. Maybe Queen will prove to have one hit left in its arsenal.

McCarten is separately working with Working Title on Darkest Hour, the spec script he wrote about Winston Churchill’s dark days in 1940, when things looked bleakest in his battle to stop the Nazis.

SPIKE EDNEY: FROM LANDPORT TO LIVE AID EXHIBITION OPENS 19 NOV
Direct link

Spike Edney exhibition

Tomorrow is the launch of the exhibition “SPIKE EDNEY: From Landport to Live Aid” at Portsmouth Guildhall, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 2AB.

For those of you who will be coming to The SAS Band gig at the Guildhall on 8th Dec, you will be able to view the exhibit before the show in the Portsmouth Music Experience Galleries located on the first floor. The entrance to the galleries is next to the Freda Swain bar, so grab yourself a drink and have a wander...

The Guildhall’s Portsmouth Music Experience Galleries were created to showcase musicians, who have come from the Portsmouth area. Since the late 50s, Portsmouth has always been a hotbed of live music with great venues and fantastic bands. Spike was asked if he would exhibit some of his personal collection, as he’s being inducted onto the Guildhall's “Wall of Fame” on the day of the gig. In addition to Spike’s temporary exhibition, they also have a great permanent exhibit, featuring rock photographers and bands from the area, from the 60s to present day.

We hope you enjoy the exhibition and Spike’s story.

Cheers,
The SAS Band Office
