**Fri 06 Oct 17** We Are The Champions To mark the 40th Anniversary of the release of Queen’s 1977 landmark album News of the World, alternative previously unheard ‘Raw Sessions’ versions of both We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You are being released as digital downloads on the 6 October 2017. Originally launched in October 1977, News of the World is one of Queen's biggest selling albums of all time. It opens with two of the band's most indestructible worldwide hits, the Brian May-penned We Will Rock You and Freddie Mercury's We Are The Champions, monumental stadium anthems which remain a staple of major sporting events all around the world to this day. Both are taken from the upcoming special box set edition of News of the World which is released on the 17th November. The brand new package includes the original album on CD, plus two further CDs of recently unearthed out-takes and rarities from the band's archives, one of which is a newly created ‘alternative’ version of the whole album – Raw Sessions. Mined deep from long-vaulted studio multi-track tapes, this extraordinary parallel album brings to light never-before-heard alternative versions of each of the album’s 11 tracks. All the lead vocals on the Raw Sessions are from a different take to that used on the original album. This includes We Will Rock You, which also features a radically different approach to the guitar solo, reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, plus the band’s original studio banter recorded immediately prior to the master take. This reveals that the much-speculated noise at the beginning of the 1977 record is actually an echo of Brian’s count-in. On We Are The Champions, there are also many unfamiliar instrumental elements, most notably from the guitar department. This track was edited on the 1977 album but is presented here for the first time in its originally recorded length with two more choruses. Also included is a charming false-start to one of the earliest takes of the song. The recordings also reveal that We Are The Champions, known for its unresolved cliff-hanger ending, was originally intended to fade-out. Freddie ends the take saying "That was a lovely feel…that’s exactly how it should be”. All of the material on the Raw Sessions was recorded in 1977. We Are The Champions & We Will Rock You are available from: 40th Anniversary Edition of News of the World, released 17 November 2017

**Wed 04 Oct 17** With Cher's musical opening on Broadway - a look at how some other jukebox musicals have fared. Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You, Rock of Ages, Viva Forever and Desperately Seeking Susan.. STANDARD REPUBLIC EXTRACT: We Will Rock You The hit musical, based on the songs of Queen and written by Ben Elton, closed in 2014 after a 12-year run in the West End. Critics were never kind to the £6m production, in particular its story – set in a dystopian future where music is banned. When it opened in 2002, the Guardian said the plot “really is as sixth form as it sounds“. But that didn’t stop it being seen by more than 16 million people across 28 countries. “We Will Rock You had terrible reviews, mostly because critics didn’t like Ben Elton’s book (that it was based on), but at the end of the day people love Queen. The audience contained very large numbers of tourists who couldn’t care less about the story, they just loved the songs,” explains Andrzej. It’s actually one of Perry’s favourites. [Theatre vlogger Perry O’Bree] “It was very futuristic, ahead of its time,” he said. “It was more than just a jukebox musical because of the memory of Freddie Mercury. The really special thing about it was that on the odd Saturday night, Brian May would just rock up, run on stage and play. Having someone so behind it from the original band, that’s what makes it such a successful thing.” PLEASE JOIN US on: |

**Wed 04 Oct 17** Check out my review of Princes of the Universe: The photography of Denis O'Reagan and Queen HERE. Chris High
REVIEW: Princes of the Universe: Denis O’Reagan and the Photography of Queen Princes of the Universe: Denis O’Reagan and the Photography of Queen Are you likely to see any exhibition featuring Queen in any other surroundings than those that drip opulence? Not really and The Off Beat Lounge certainly chose well to put on Princes of the Universe: Denis O’Reagan and the Photography of Queen at the city’s Williams / BMW Showrooms on Great Howard Street. The place oozes class – and money – so that the 100 + photographs taken by official band snapper Denis O’Reagan not only captured the spirit of the band, but also the essence of the time at which they were taken. In a pre-show Q&A, O’Reagan was on hand to regale the audience of around 50 enthusiasts before yet more descended, with tales of life on the road. There were stories of after show parties held in Munich brothels and of Freddie’s wish to go “F**k me a German” when Queen were in Germany and the country won the World Cup. There were also insights into the feelings of the band – notable for its lack of after show binge – following the original band’s final date at Knebworth in 1986. O’Reagan also explained that as a photographer, and despite the hundreds of gigs he has been privileged to be at – he barely got chance to watch a gig entire. From this stand point then, it seems the paying fan gets a far better deal than expected! The true stars of the show are, of course, the pictures themselves. All beautifully mounted beneath low slung lights, it isn’t merely the subjects that glitter but also the skill on display in that one – or, in this case, those 101+ – killer shots. There’s Freddie pointing to the thunderous heavens at Wembley, Brian replete with red sash belt in Birmingham in ‘84, Roger giving it hell behind the kit during Somebody to Love at Milton Keynes in ‘82 and John at his studiously efficient best from just about any year the band were on the road. There are also the more private moments taken backstage. Brian at a sound check, Freddie sitting casually atop O’Reagan’s camera boxes, Roger having a quiet cuppa and a fag and John being, well, John! What truly stands out though is the photographer’s eye for the moment and in this exhibition, if anything is exemplified, it is that Denis O’Reagan is a master of his art. Off Beat Lounge have other exhibitions planned in the near future. There’s events being dedicated to the photography of Punk and Bruce Springsteen looming. If you’re fans of either – or just appreciate the artistry of photography – do yourself a favour and snare yourself a ticket. You will not be disappointed in the slightest. **Mon 02 Oct 17** Watch Dave Grohl And Taylor Hawkins gobsmacked while watching footage of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury.
RADIO X Footage of the upcoming Queen biopic starring actor Rami Malek leaked out recently, and people are getting pretty excited - particularly mega-fans Foo Fighters. The clip - which has now been taken down by the film-makers - showed Malek and his co-stars recreating the legendary band’s famous appearance at Live Aid in July 1985. So when Chris Moyles sat down with Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins last week, he thought he’d give them a sneak preview. Watching the clip, Grohl gasps: “He does the run! That’s amazing!” “This is gonna be so frickin’ weird, man,” adds Taylor, joking that he’s the ultimate Queen nerd: “I’m gonna be looking at that and saying ‘Well, he didn’t have those cymbals at Live Aid!’” MORE PLEASE JOIN US on: |
