**Sun 08 Sep 13** GIGWISE lists 13 artists influenced by Queen: IF IT WASN'T FOR FREDDIE MERCURY... 13 ARTISTS INSPIRED BY THE QUEEN ICON Matt Bellamy: "The best band in the world is Queen, definitely." Karen O: "Well, Freddie Mercury is a really huge rock star in my head. I've always thought he was just so tough and such an amazing entertainer, really a contradiction in many ways as well. So he was incredible." Katy Perry: "Freddie Mercury was - and remains - my biggest influence. The combination of his sarcastic approach to writing lyrics and his 'I don't give a fuck' attitude really inspired my music. Cee-Lo Green: "The music industry is all about art versus product. What's left to do, but implode? Please, at some point in the day, play 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to the kids. Make them listen. Show them the possibilities." Dave Grohl: "Every band should study Queen at Live Aid. I consider Freddie Mercury the greatest frontman of all time. You'd imagine that Freddie was more than human, but you know how he controlled Wembley Stadium at Live Aid in 1985? He stood up there and did his vocal warm ups with the audience. Something that intimate, where they realize, 'Oh yeah, he's just a fucking dude." Lady Gaga: "I adored Freddie Mercury and Queen had a hit called 'Radio Gaga'. That's why I love the name. Freddie was unique - one of the biggest personalities in the whole of pop music. He was not only a singer but also a fantastic performer, a man of the theatre and someone who constantly transformed himself. In short: a genius." Twin Atlantic: "The most influential artist of the past 25 years is Queen's Freddie Mercury. Psy: "My lifetime role model and hero is Freddie Mercury of Queen." Lupe Fiasco: "I have an understanding of Queen and the way Freddie Mercury did his harmonies. Kurt Cobain: "I used to take a nap in the van and listen to Queen. Over and over again and drain the battery on the van. Then we'd be stuck. That happened a few times. We'd be stuck with a dead battery because I'd listened to Queen too much." Adam Lambert: "Freddie's voice has so much texture to it. It?s super sexy. He kind of grabs at everything, he squeezes it. He was completely over the top in the best possible way." Wiz Kalifa: "I jumped up in the air and landed on my knees and made my back touch the ground, it looked awesome, like some Freddie Mercury shit." David Bowie: "Of all the more theatrical performers, Freddie took it further than the rest. He took it over the edge. And of course I always admire a man who wears tights!" © brianmay.com |

**Wed 04 Sep 13** A reminder from Matt Lucas why we're remembering dear Freddie tomorrow.... MATT LUCAS: "Freddie Mercury is very special to me because he's not like other singers, he's like a superhero especially when you see him on stage at Wembley 1986. He even dresses like a superhero, the way he struts around the stage, he's got this kind of arrogance and pomp and circumstance and I actually love it. It's very entertaining. And if you think about growing up and all your friends being into those shoegazing bands, Freddie Mercury always looked up. Sometimes out of something very bad can actually come surprisingly something rather good, and as tragic as Freddie's death was, did act as a reason for the formation of The Mercury Phoenix Trust, which has raised millions and millions of pounds for those with AIDS and HIV. The amazing concert in 1992 marked the launch of The Phoenix Trust, and this film is to remind us today that it's actually 21 years and the Phoenix Trust is still going strong, and Freddie's legacy lives on, not just in his music and performances and song writing, but also in this remarkable charity. Okay, so in the 21 years since The Mercury Phoenix Trust was established a lot has changed because treatment of HIV and AIDS has got a lot better, however, infection rates are now again on the rise in the Western World, and in the Third World, they always have been. We still don't have the education or the drugs that we need so it's really really important that we continue to support this very important charity. It was Freddie's dying wish that his music and legacy was used to raise money to fight this terrible disease and obviously we have the Freddie For A Day on the 5th of September, which would be his birthday. This is a fight which goes on all the year round so anything you can do at any time in the year would be greatly appreciated." Hard Rock Cafe in cities throughout Europe will open up their restaurants on September 5th to help raise funds and awareness for Freddie For A Day. There will be prizes for the best dressed Freddie's as well as entertainment throughout the day. Marc Carey, the Director of Marketing for Hard Rock Europe says “Hard Rock Cafe is delighted to be working alongside Queen and The Mercury Phoenix Trust on their annual ‘Freddie For A Day’ fund raising and awareness day on Thursday September 5th. Hard Rock has long been associated with the rock legends and their charity, raising $350,000 through the sales of a Queen Signature Series T-Shirt and even setting up a ‘mobile’ restaurant backstage at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in ’92. Each cafe throughout Europe will be encouraging local Freddie fans to come along dressed up as the icon and to raise funds for this great cause that funds HIV/AIDS awareness and education throughout the world” Claudia Walker of the Mercury Phoenix Trust says "The Mercury Phoenix Trust initiative Freddie For A Day is a global AIDS fundraising and awareness campaign, enabling fans around the world to help the Trust in its work and have fun whilst doing so. This new partnership with the Hard Rock Cafe will further raise the profile of Freddie For A Day as we join forces in many cities, initially across Europe, to celebrate Freddie's life and help those less fortunate to fight this terrible disease which ended his life”

**Tue 03 Sep 13** FREDDIE MERCURY CATSUIT FEATURES IN MANCHESTER HARD ROCK 'COUTURE FASHION' EXHIBITION Direct link MANCUNIAN MATTERS Iconic stage outfits from the world’s biggest pop stars are now on display at Manchester’s Hard Rock Café at The Printworks. The Hard Rock Couture exhibition chronicles the influence that musicians and singers have had on fashion starting with the rock ‘n’ roll explosion of the 1950s through to the modern day. Nestled among the restaurant’s impressive memorabilia collection, visitors will get the chance to admire costumes from music legends including Michael Jackson, Madonna and Elvis Presley. Devotees of pop queen Madonna have the chance to get up close and personal with her infamous gold conical corset worn during the 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour. Michael Jackson fans will get the chance to admire the red leather jacket worn in the music video for No.1 hit Beat It. A striking monochrome spandex catsuit sported by flamboyant Queen frontman Freddie Mercury during their 1978 Jazz Tour, a barely-there sequinned Katy Perry dress and a practically demure Lady Gaga netted dress are also on display. Hard Rock Historian and tour curator Jeff Nolan said that he and the team had spent nearly two years unearthing musical treasures from the 77,000-piece Hard Rock collection. He said: "The collection showcases a unique part of music history and gives fans an opportunity to see that history first-hand." The exhibition will be on display at Hard Rock Café, The Printworks, Manchester until September 8 and is free of charge. For more information visit www.hardrock.com |

**Mon 02 Sep 13** In September 2012 the greatest Rock’n’Roll frontman of all time Freddie Mercury became an honorary member of the Angry Birds family, it has today been announced by Freddie For A Day and Rovio Entertainment that the partnership has been extended to Freddie appearing in the game itself. The Freddie For A Day tournament on Angry Birds Friends will be available to play on Facebook or mobile between September, 2. - 8. The idea of Freddie for A Day is to raise awareness for The Mercury Phoenix Trust as part of the worldwide fight against AIDS. You can see a trailer for the new tournament here. Freddie Bird – based on the legendary pop icon Freddie Mercury – makes a special appearance in the game, but not as a playable character. The tournament has a Freddie Mercury theme, with references to iconic songs shown in the level designs. “Last year we were thrilled to participate in ‘Freddie For A Day’ by bringing Freddie Mercury into the flock in one of our all-time favourite animations,” said Philip Hickey, the VP of Marketing at Rovio Entertainment. “We are delighted to continue our support and to drive awareness for The Mercury Phoenix Trust again this year through a ‘Freddie For A Day’ themed tournament on Angry Birds Friends – including iconic song references and even moustaches!” Now into its fourth year, Freddie For A Day, the worldwide marker of the life and legend of the late, great Freddie Mercury timed around his birth date, is gearing up to once again turn us into a Globe of moustaches for a day while raising funds to combat AIDS which claimed Freddie in 1991. Globally Freddie For A Day is celebrated on September 5th, the late great Freddie’s birthday. The partnership between Freddie For A Day and Rovio Entertainment is the latest in a series of ventures that have been set up globally by the Freddie For A Day team. A large number of celebrities have backed the campaign, including Katy Perry, Robert De Niro, Matt Lucas, Jeff Beck, Ben Elton and many more. The likes of the Red Bull Formula One team have also been involved, as have Google with their Freddie Google Doodle. September 5th 2013 would have been Freddie’s 67th birthday, and to mark the occasion, performers including Roger Daltrey, Melanie C, Alfie Boe and Al Murray will be taking to the stage at One Mayfair, London for an evening of comedy and rock ‘n’ roll to support the Queen AIDS Benefit, to raise money for The Mercury Phoenix Trust – fighting AIDS worldwide. It doesn’t take being famous to be a part in Freddie For A Day. All you need to decide is whether you are bold enough to go for a full sparkly body leotard, head-to-toe PVC biker leathers, or simply to stick with aviator sunglasses and of course.... that ‘stache! Comic Relief has the red nose, Freddie For A Day has the famous bristles. |
