Is Nuno Bettencourt’s solo on Extreme’s “Get the Funk Out” up there with Hendrix’ “All Along the Watchtower”? Queen’s Brian May weighs in…
BRIAN MAY: [Listening to solo] “That’s beautiful enough but I guess if it hasn’t brought in tears to your eyes as a guitarist I don’t know where to start. That to me is the epitome of what a solo should be on record. You know it sounds like it’s coming straight out of inside him. It is you know, those things don’t happen very often. That’s an amazing solo. That ranks to me alongside, well, any great solo you want to mention. I think the Jimi Hendrix ‘All Along The Watchtower’ solo for a lot of people would be right up there because it has so many ways of expressing the same thing in so many different ways.
This is the same and on pure technical ability alone that’s colossal. I could never do that. No way in a month of Sundays could I learn that solo. It’s a landmark . There’s a landmark in rock history and I think should have its own little medal struck and awarded to Nuno Bettencourt and Extreme.”
