Today we are celebrating the official birth of Stereoscopy, the day when Charles Wheatstone (1802 – 1875) presented to the Royal Society in London his first paper on binocular vision and his invention, the stereoscope. A lot is happening in the world on this fifth edition of stereoscopy day. Go to Stereoscopyday.com and click on the Events tab to have a look at what’s going on. For instance, nine articles will be published today on Stereoscopy.blog, one every two hours from 6.00 am onwards.
You can also celebrate Stereoscopy Day in your own way by taking stereoscopic photographs with your smartphone or a digital camera (take one picture, move the device laterally by 6 to 7 cm – the distance between our two eyes –to the right and take another picture). You can then align the two resulting images with the free application StereoPhotoMaker and share the final stereo pair on your social media. Don’t be afraid to try. Stereo is fun and if the result is not perfect the first time, have as many goes as it takes. Once you get bitten by the stereo bug, it usually is for life.
