Well, here’s me and my dear and wonderful missus being Mr and Mrs Santa backstage at the Vaudeville Theatre last night.
The occasion was the Secret Santa celebration of the London cast of Kinky Boots. Their Company manager, Heather, is an old and dear friend of mine, and she asked us if we’d appear as a surprise, to distribute the presents. It’s a system which is quite a strong tradition in West End Theatre, in which each member of the Company buys a present for one other member, and the link is kept secret from the recipient. And then there is a presenting moment close to Christmas. Last year I did the honours for the lovely company of Wicked. This year, it was for the extraordinary cast and crew of Kinky Boots, a musical which had a massive success on Broadway and is hoping to pick up some honours in the UK in the coming year. Although the music for it was written by Cindy Lauper and the show was premiered in New York, it’s an English story … based on true events in a Northern Town in the UK. A very traditional shoe company is on the brink of collapse as it’s handed on to the next generation, and the new owner decides to make a radical change of style, to make the kind of boots normally only worn by a particular kind of, shall we say, androgynous stage performer. It seems like an insane risk, but it leads to some happiness and a lot campery ! It also has a nice sub-plot about the desirability of accepting and respecting different kinds of human beings for what they are.
We were rewarded for our Clausian efforts by being invited to the show that night. And as the curtain came down on a very well-received show, we were kitted out with boots from the show. These things are no casual accoutrement. Each pair is worth about two thousand pounds, hand-made by a specialist company for the show. Now, you might think I’d been around enough cross-dressing to have tried this before … but in fact this was the first time I’d ever experienced trying to stand up and walk in 5 inch heels and platforms and faux leather up to the middle of the thigh (the Swarovski crystals are just a bonus . I can tell you I now have a new respect for anyone who can make a success of this kind of thing. The cast of this show not only sty upright in these things for 2 hours and a half, but manage to dance in them too, and some of them do acrobatics too. Amazing. I can still feel the pain !!!
