If the weather is nice on Wednesday afternoon, many of you in Britain and Europe will be able to see the partial phases of this eclipse of the Sun. But please be very careful. NEVER look straight at the Sun, and don’t go anywhere near a telescope or binoculars pointed at the Sun. It only takes one mistake to ruin your eyesight for life. If you don’t have a specific equipment specially designed to observe the Sun, here’s the best plan. Make a small pin hole in a sheet of cardboard, and tomorrow practice projecting an image of the Sun through this hole on to a piece of white card. Then you’ll be ready on Wednesday to observe the disk of the Sun being ‘eaten up’ by the Moon getting in the way. If you have a small telescope, you can get a higher quality image using that instead to project onto the piece of card. But be VERY careful.
It’s so easy to momentarily forget, and try to line it up by looking through the lens at the Sun, or even through the finder scope if the telescope has one. NEVER DO THAT. Keep safe at all times. But, once you are sure you’re safe, enjoy this beautiful spectacle. I will be in Spain, hoping to observe the Sun eventually becoming completely covered by the Moon – the Total Solar Eclipse. I’m hoping to share it with you right here live streaming on Instagram. It’ll probably be makeshift as usual, but I’m hoping you might enjoy experiencing it in this way. And perhaps I will inspire you to go and experience a total solar eclipse live yourself someday.
