Ben Whishaw looks set to replace Sacha Baron Cohen in the forthcoming Freddie Mercury biopic.

The film had looked to be in jeopardy after the Borat star pulled out, with uncertainty over who would play the singer.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe had been slated as a possible replacement, but now the surviving members of Queen are hopeful Whishaw will step in to play Mercury.

Drummer Roger Taylor told The One Show hosts Chris Evans and Alex Jones that the actor they hoped would take the part has the initials ‘BW’.

When Jones suggested the mystery man was Whishaw, Taylor confirmed: ‘Well, we hope so.’

Whishaw, probably best known for his role in Skyfall has Q, has experience of playing real-life characters.

He has previously played Rolling Stones star Keith Richards in Stoned, musician Bob Dylan in I’m Not There, and poet John Keats in Bright Star.
