One great way to introduce classic rock songs and music to younger generations is have them appear in coveted Super Bowl ads. That’s exactly what happened on Super Bowl Sunday on CBS when six television commercials featured two songs from Queen and other greatest hits from Aerosmith, Van Halen, Nilsson, and the late David Bowie. Four of these TV ads are for automobiles, while the rest went for a hard-coated chewy candy and everyone’s favourite condiment for hamburgers and hot dogs. Here’s an explanation of each song title, artist, and commercial product presented to classic rock lovers everywhere from Super Bowl 50.
“Another One Bites the Dust” – Queen (Hyundai Genesis)
No matter the generation there’s always a concerned father when his daughter begins dating for the first time. Kevin Hart stars as a father whose daughter is going out on a date. Her boyfriend picks her up at home with the father offering his car to drive for the evening. Little does the boyfriend know the Hyundai Genesis has a tracking device, so dad follows them everywhere on their date. First they go to the movies, a carnival, and a parking spot to get very romantic (and hopefully away from the overly protective papa). While all this is transpiring, you hear Queen’s number one hit “Another One Bites the Dust” as the victorious soundtrack.
“Somebody to Love” – Queen (Honda Ridgeline)
These sheep don’t always go “ba ba,” instead they sing Queen’s gospel-styled power ballad from 1976 “Somebody to Love” off the band’s acclaimed “A Day at the Races” album. A sheep farmer is loading sheep onto the back of a new 2016 Honda Ridgeline truck. As he loads them off onto the pasture, you can hear the faint song by Queen played inside the truck’s powerful sound system. Like sheep will do when following their master, they sing along to the radio whatever’s playing.
