FCA Scores Early With ‘Icelandic Vikings’ Super Bowl Ad That Floats With Cultural Relevance
04 February 2018
FCA isn’t actually producing a Super Bowl ad today, on the Big Game day itself, as Hyundai is doing for the second year in a row. But in its first advertisement during the game, the company artfully tapped into the current cultural context, borrowing mythology from the Vikings of old and relevance from the Vikings of the NFL to pay homage to the real star of the commercial: the coming, new 2019 Ram pickup truck.
The 60-second “Icelandic Vikings” spot borrows liberally from pop culture and current memes. The imagery leverages the popularity of the fictional Vikings series on The History Channel, including the forbidding Scandinavian landscape and stormy seas as well as a “shield maiden” who’s helping the guys row their ferocious Viking ship.
Of course, they’ve got a new Ram in tow as they’re headed somewhere, singing “We Will Rock You’ with frightening determination.
