On This Day…1991

“I still love you.”

On 30 May 1991, Freddie Mercury filmed what would become his final music video with Queen: These Are The Days Of Our Lives. The song’s reflective lyrics and Freddie’s moving performance have since made it one of the band’s most poignant and cherished works.

By this stage, Freddie’s health had significantly deteriorated. Rather than his usual energetic stage presence, he remained largely still throughout the filming, delivering a powerful performance through his expression alone. His close friend and former personal assistant, Peter Freestone, later recalled that even walking had become extremely painful for Freddie during this period.

Despite his illness, Freddie’s courage, dignity, and determination shone through. In the video’s closing moments, he looks directly into the camera and softly says, “I still love you”—a message that many fans continue to view as his final farewell.

During the last months of Freddie’s life, only a small number of people were permitted to photograph him. One of them was Queen’s art director, Richard Gray, who captured this image during the final filming sessions.
