Freddie frequently wore this Zandra Rhodes top with bespoke black-and-white flared trousers on stage from 1973 to 1974. He wore this outfit, a black-and-white asymmetrical ensemble, at Queen’s Imperial College shows in October and November 1973, which are regarded by many as landmark concerts for the band.

In a 2019 interview, Zandra Rhodes recalled being contacted by Freddie: “He hunted me out in my funny little attic…with Brian May,” where they tried on various clothes to see what would feel and look right. “Freddie wanted boldness and expressiveness.”

Freddie wore this top and the matching trousers on numerous occasions in the months following the Imperial College gigs, including performances at the Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, the Sunbury Pop Festival, Melbourne and Providence, Rhode Island. The latter may have been its final stage appearance, on 27 April 1974.

*With thanks from The Mercury Phoenix Trust, the garment is currently on loan to the Queen Studio Experience from a very kind and generous Queen fan…*
