A Life That Changed Music Forever…
At 45, Freddie left us too soon, but his legacy will stay with us forever, as his songs and performances will continue to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.
Freddie wasn’t just the frontman of Queen. He was one of the most extraordinary entertainers the world has ever seen, with a voice so unique that it’s hard to compare with anything you ever heard.
When Queen started in the early 1970s, nobody sounded or looked quite like them. With Brian, Roger and John, Freddie helped create a band where rock could become theatrical, soft, operatic, humorous, heavy and emotional — sometimes all within the same song as, for instance in The March of the Black Queen.
The result was one of the most remarkable bands in musicial history.
Freddie’s songwriting alone would have secured his place in history. He wrote “Bohemian Rhapsody,” arguably Queen’s defining moment and one of the most famous singles ever recorded.
Its success helped establish Queen all over the world. The song topped the UK singles chart for nine weeks on its original release and later returned to No. 1 following Freddie’s death in 1991. Decades later, it continues to introduce new generations to Queen.
Freddie of course also wrote multiple other Queen classics. His songs could be intimate and vulnerable one moment and enormous, triumphant anthems the next.
And then there was Freddie the performer. On stage, he possessed something that cannot simply be taught. He had a fantastic ability to communicate with his audiences. Whether standing in front of thousands or an intimate crowd, Freddie made the audience feel that he was performing directly to them.
Perhaps best example of this came on 13 July 1985 at Live Aid. As all bands Queen were given a short slot on the Wembley stage. They turned it into one of the most famous live performances in history, and for 21 minutes the world just stopped.
Millions watched around the world as Queen played some of their greatest songs. In those few minutes, Freddie didn’t simply perform to the audience — he made the audience part of the performance.
Freddie’s achievements were not limited to Queen. His solo work demonstrated another side of his creativity. His collaboration with Montserrat Caballé created something very different with their songs bringing together rock and opera in a way that few would have imagined possible. Simply world class from two world class entertainers.
One of Freddie’s strong sides where how he could work within multiple jangres of music, like rock, pop, opera, disco, funk, gospel and theatrical music. Nothing held him back and he always looked outside the box even trying Ballet.
He also possessed an extraordinary visual imagination. He recognised the importance of spectacle without ever allowing the spectacle to overshadow the music, and his stage presence made him an inspiration for musicians all over the world.
Following his death on 24 November 1991, some of best musicians this world have seen on the same stage, joined forces for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium on 20 April 1992.
The concert raised AIDS awareness and Freddie’s legacy continue to live through the Mercury Phoenix Trust, who support HIV/AIDS awareness and projects around the world.
Thirty-five years after his passing, Freddie’s music continues to be remembered all over the world and his music has become timeless no matter if its at the movies, at sport events, or at homes throughout the world on radio and TV, Freddie gave the world music that simply refuses to disappear.
So today, on what would have been his 80th birthday, we don’t simply remember the man who died in 1991. We celebrate the artist who lived. The songwriter who wrote songs for generations. The singer whose voice remains unmistakable. The performer who could command a stadium with a single gesture.
