FULL INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT BY BARBARRA MUCCI{E&OE]

(ENGLISH VERSION)

FABIO FAZIO: And now… we have already spread the word during these days, it’s a great surprise for everyone to have him with us. Fifty years ago, together with Freddie Mercury, he founded one of the most extraordinary bands of all time. They have sold over 300 million records. Before connecting, we’d like to dedicate these images to him and Queen…

(… Videoclip …)

A rock legend, with Freddie Mercury he was the soul and founder of Queen. We’re now connecting with him, from London: Brian May!

BRIAN MAY: Hi Fabio!

FF: Hi!

BM: Thanks for inviting me.

FF: Right back at you! What an emotion! We hope to see you here in person, sooner or later, we are waiting for you with open arms. Wonderful! What a fantastic story! The soundtrack of our life…

BM: Thank you, thank you, I can’t wait to return to Italy! I have always loved it very much. I must apologise for the glasses, but I have an eye infection, it’s not my fault…

FF: Rock stars can do anything they want! No problem at all… I’m sorry for your infection, I hope you get well soon.

BM: But, if you can stand the sight, I can take them off.

FF: Please, keep your glasses on, don’t worry. So, this is a year of very important anniversaries. Among all, Queen’s foundation fifty years ago. I know you and Roger Taylor didn’t want any big celebrations. He said, “Being still around playing is the biggest birthday party.”

BM: It’s true, we didn’t want to make too much confusion. You know, fifty years make you look and feel very old. I am happy being here, working and doing a tour next year. We will start in May, then we will come to Bologna. We really hope that because it’s been a long time… Really, we have to keep doing what we have always done.

FF: It would be great if you could come and visit us before the tour begins… But now I would like to show something really beautiful to our viewers at home. This very special book was published three days ago, the title is “Queen in 3-D”, a new updated edition, entirely written and edited by Brian May. The publisher is Gremese, whom I thank. A beautiful book, full of fun facts, anecdotes, photographs, stories, passion! It’s like going through the story of Queen with Brian May, and it’s also the story of our own life, we all lived our lives with that soundtrack.

BM: Look, it comes with a viewer, so there is also the possibility of seeing the images in three dimensions.

FF: Exactly, in fact, here it is, I have mine too.

BM: They’re not just two-dimensional photographs, but they’re three-dimensional and this makes the difference!

FF: And it’s a great passion of yours! In the end, we discovered that you actually have always followed and pursued 3-D photography, together with music.

BM: Yes, I probably have too many passions… Of course my main passion is music, but also stereoscopy, then astronomy, I was also able to become a doctor. And then animals, which I love a lot, and the protection of wild animals and animal rights are a great passion of my life.

FF: In fact, Brian May has a degree in Physics, and his father wanted a more certain job for him, as a man of science. By the way, you also taught at school while composing the first Queen songs, right?

BM: Yes, that’s right. Yes, I was teaching math in a secondary school. It really pleased me a lot even though the kids were a bit suspicious and kept saying, “Are you a rock star? Teacher, are you really a rock star?” And I was in preparation, let’s just say…

FF: Well, I think they became aware of that not long after, for sure…! So during the whole time with Queen you were taking pictures, and you documented everything.

BM: Yes, that’s right and it’s very easy! If we had some time I could show it to you. Even with an iPhone or any other mobile phone you can take photos in three dimensions. Just take two photos, one after the other, it’s all explained on my app. Because we do need three dimensional photographs, today. I convinced a lot of people, including scientists from NASA and ISA. In fact, we have moved from the Victorian period to space, with the three dimensions.

FF: Why do you say there is a need for three-dimensional photographs? What do they add?

BM: Because we have two eyes for a good reason. In fact, we have a privilege because we can see depth and, in evolutionary terms, it was a great advantage to have two eyes because we can see further. For example, if someone wants to attack us or if we have to attack others. The three-dimensionality was very neglected…

FF: This passion, if I’m not mistaken… Hey, but wait… Did I spot the guitar? Is it the Red Special?

BM: Yes, yes, I always have a guitar in my hand. I am glued to my guitar!

FF: Is that the Red Special? I can’t see very well from here…

BM: Yes, that’s it! It’s my Red Special, which I built with my father many years ago, about a hundred years ago…!! But it still works good.

FF: Can we hear it play?

(…Brian May plays some chords on his guitar…)

FF: But in the book, which I want to show once again… Thank you, thank you …

BM: I’m trying to let you hear something …

FF: We can’t hear that much, we can’t get the sound… but we tried… In the book, you write about this thing, the guitar built with your father. Rums it that you took a wood from a fireplace! our ha

BM: Yes, exactly, there was a fireplace with a hundred-year-old wooden lintel, then we took some springs from the valves of a motorcycle. It was made with a lot of waste, but I have kept it with me for my entire career and I want to keep it with me as long as I live.

FF: It’s touching, really beautiful. But rumour has it that, during your concerts, there is a person in charge of supervising the guitar when you put it down.

BM: Oh yes, there’s always a babysitter for my guitar… And during concerts I still hold it in my hand, so there’s no problem, I like it that way. But anyway we really keep an eye on it, it’s like an old lady and it needs special care.

FF: Your dad was an electronic engineer, wasn’t he? He convinced himself only at a certain point in his life that yours was a serious job. In New York, I think.

BM: Yes, well you know, he has always had problems accepting that I would never go on to study Physics, Astronomy, etc… and that I wanted to be a pop star… He said to me, “Why do you throw everything away to be a pop star?” There, you can see my dad’s photograph… It took a long time, a year and a half… We played the Madison Square Garden and I invited him to see us, and after the show he came to me, he shook my hand and said, “Now I understand.” It was a beautiful moment. And I think we all want to please our parents and make them happy. I succeeded …

FF: We are talking to a legend… I’m really happy and excited… Really happy, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I must say that reading the book…

BM: Me too, me too.

FF: …there is a great humanity in this book, in these little stories, behind the scenes, that we never imagined… The fragility, too, of a big rock star, starting with Freddie Mercury – who on the other hand was the one who managed to reconcile, even in difficult moments, the characters and moods of all, who tried to settle arguments.

BM: Yes, look, sometimes you don’t understand why everyone thinks, “He is too impetuous, he has this obsession with dominating”. He was like this: very diplomatic within the band, he always managed to find a solution. This was one of his many talents. Freddie had so many talents. For example, I don’t like to sanctify people, but Freddie was truly an extraordinary human being, absolutely unique and incredible… His talent for songwriting, for being present on stage, for being able to reach people’s hearts when he was singing… an extraordinary man, really … And we still miss him today…

FF: Insecure inside, a warrior under construction outside… In November it will be thirty years after the death of Freddie Mercury.

BM: Yes, that’s right, and it’s quite impossible to believe he’s gone. Because, you know, I have a feeling that, in many ways, he is always here with us and that he has never left us.

FF: As for many young boys, I believe that Brian May’s passion for music comes from the need to getting girls. Is that right?

BM: Oh well, absolutely yes! If at all, at least partially it is so because, come on, love makes the world go round. I was shy, even Freddie was shy. We were both very shy. But if you are on a stage you cannot allow yourself to be shy because people are there to listen to you. It was like a happy island like this, wasn’t it?

FF: But then, while you were at it, you learned to play the guitar very well to the point that in 2020 Total Guitar magazine awarded you the title of “Best Rock Guitarist of All Time”, and the Royal Mail has even issued a stamp, which maybe we can see… Brian May on the stamp with his guitar. Is it difficult to carry the weight of all this? Well, not the stamp … The weight of being a legend.

BM: Well, you know… The secret is not to take things too seriously because, in my position, there are a number of positive but also negative things. So the secret is to keep your vision and focus. So, I was pleased they told me I am the best in the world… Yes, I can play, but the beautiful thing about being a musician, a guitarist, is not the competition but making your voice heard, and this makes me happy, that my voice is heard. And it makes me happy that people say I’m the best in the world but I don’t believe it because there are millions of good artists in the world. I’m glad to be part of them, let’s put it that way.

FF: You are not just a legendary guitarist, you are an extraordinary songwriter. With Freddie Mercury you wrote from We Will Rock You to I Want It All, from The Show Must Go On to many other hits. We would like to dedicate to your career as a great musician these images and we would like to watch them with you. To Brian May.

(… Videoclip …)

BM: Thank you, thank you with all my heart. You have really worked hard, I’m deeply touched. You’re very kind, really. Thanks, I’m very pleased to see these images.

FF: You know, the book thrilled us because while reading it we said, “We must do this, or talk about this, or this…”. In the end, we won’t be able to say everything but we would like to say a lot.

BM: Thank you, and I really have to thank Raffaella Rolla as well, who made a wonderful translation.

FF: It’s true, very beautiful. Your solo career has also been very rewarding. Back To The Light, an album released in 1992, is reissued this year.

BM: Yes, there it is! FF: This is the reissue. BM: Yes, I’m very happy, I have one too! It means a lot to me, because look, thirty years ago I was making these tracks and in the reworking I found the same person, the same me. I’m proud I could make it available to new generations.

FF: Back To The Light, in 1992, was a return to the light after the death of Freddie Mercury… And this year we can say that it’s a return to the light for all humanity after the pandemic, after leaving the pandemic behind, let’s hope…

BM: Yes, it was something I was thinking about when I revisited all these tracks. We went through a really dark period and we need to know that there is a light to which we can return. I know what depression is, I also know what many people’s problems are, so it’s important to make attempts to regain optimism.

FF: In the video – the full version is available on Brian May’s YouTube channel – there is a young Brian May who talks with today’s Brian May. I would like to show an excerpt from the Back To The Light video.

(… Videoclip …)

BM: It touches me because it was an incredible journey back in time.

FF: In a sense the three dimensions are all there, even that of time, in this video.

BM: Yes, that’s right, you’re right… Four dimensions, even.

FF: True, this time four dimensions. We can have an idea of Queen’s success if we consider an element, among others: the 1981 Greatest Hits album sold over 25 million copies, but above all it is one of the most popular album ever, and one out of every four families in Britain owns that record. In other words, one in four families physically has that record at home. Just to have an idea of such an amazing success…

BM: My dad probably never thought we’d have achieved such a result. And neither do I…

FF: Then as proof of the fact that people’s love has never diminished, there’s the Academy Award – Bohemian Rhapsody, three years ago – in short, it was an extraordinary success.

BM: Yes, amazing, beyond all expectations I have to say, really… It turned into a billion dollar movie, a thing like Gone With the Wind, we never expected it… For me, it was a wonderful thing and I was pleased because we did what we wanted, I presented Freddie as a human being and an artist as he deserved it. And, for me, it was a source of great joy because it has reached the new generations and, thanks to the film, now they see us with different eyes. It was an interesting thing, we were very nervous, I must confess, because you have to make a movie where they actually film us. That movie was about Freddie but we’re Freddie’s family so we’re part of that movie. So I must say thank you very much to Rami and the actor who impersonated me, Gwilym Lee, who did an amazing job.

FF: And you went to the cinema with your grandson…

BM: Yes, I took the whole family there, they too were amazed because, for example, the younger ones (I have three grandchildren) are not aware of who we were in the past and therefore I was pleased to bring them, they’ll remember me when I’m gone…

FF: Since the great success comes with A Night At The Opera in 1975, and the album contained Bohemian Rhapsody, and someone says is the first video clip in history, we’d like to watch thirty seconds of it with Brian May, so we can brag to friends and say, “I watched a video with Brian May”.

(… Videoclip …)

FF: Queen in 3-D, published by Gremese, the story of the greatest rock band in history through the words and pictures by Brian May. Queen will be back in Italy in July 2022, in Bologna, so who knows maybe we can meet again before July, it would be great. Let’s try! If you can, it will be a great pleasure. Two dates in Italy.

BM: Thanks Fabio. Thanks so much for everything.

FF: Could you please tell us “Ciao” in Italian? We know you can say Galileo…

BM: It’s the only word I know but I tell you with all my heart: ciao!

FF: Thanks, thanks Brian May. Thanks a lot. Have a good evening.

BRIAN MAY: Ciao Fabio!

FF: Ciao!

BM: Grazie per avermi invitato.

FF: Ma grazie a te!

FF: Le rock stars possono fare qualunque cosa!

Fra tutte, cinquant’anni fa nascevano i Queen.

Inizieremo a Maggio, poi verremo a Bologna, speriamo davvero perché è passato tanto tempo… Davvero, dobbiamo continuare a fare quello che facevamo

FF: Esatto, infatti eccolo qua, ce l’ho anch’io uguale

A New York, credo.

E a noi manca ancora oggi…

Era come un’isola felice così, no?

Con Freddie Mercury hai firmato da We Will Rock You a I want It All, The Show Must Go On e tantissimi altri. Io spero ti faccia piacere, alla tua carriera di grandissimo musicista abbiamo voluto dedicare e vorremmo vedere insieme a te queste immagini. A Brian May.

(…Videoclip…)

Back To The Light, album pubblicato nel 1992, quest’anno c’è la riedizione

Io vorrei mostrare un estratto da Back To The Light.

(…Videoclip…)

Mandiamo in onda 30 secondi

(…Videoclip…)

Proviamoci! Se potrai, sarà un grande piacere. Due date in Italia.

BM: Grazie Fabio. Grazie davvero di tutto.

FF: Ma ce lo dici “ciao” in Italiano? Noi sappiamo solo che dite Galileo…

BM: E’ l’unica parola che conosco però ve la dico col cuore: ciao!

FF: Grazie, grazie Brian May. Grazie mille. Buona serata.
