Brazil daily paper O Globo reports that souvenir shops at the Rock In Rio festival – which kicks off Friday, September 18 with Queen + Adam Lambert, will be selling a special limited edition souvenir this year: mud – excavated from the site of the very first festival back in 1985.
The idea came about when recent building works began on the original 1985 concert site which this year will be transformed into the official Athlete’s Village for the forthcoming Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. During excavations constructors began to find relics of the original 1985 concert – tennis shoes, parts of T shirts, festival wristbands all of which had remained in the soil over the past 30 years.
Learning of this, Rock In Rio organisers seized on the idea to commemorate that first historic concert by literally selling the ground the concert stood on. Glass vials of that muddy compound take their place among this year’s special 30 year celebration souvenirs.
