BRIAN MAY REVEALS HE IS UNDERGOING ‘URGENT’ TESTS FOR CANCER
30 December 2013 by Jenn Selby Brian May has revealed that he is undergoing “urgent” tests for cancer after a health scare.

The Queen guitarist, 66, told fans that he made the discovery after visiting his doctor over the festive period in excruciating pain similar to that which he experienced following a knee replacement last year.

“I thought my hip joint was going the same way as the knee,” he wrote on his official website, BrianMay.com. “Finally it got really bad about two weeks before Christmas. So bad I had to give up on going anywhere if there was standing up involved. My GP decided to try to get to the bottom of it and sent me for a set of MRI scans. The scans showed up all kinds of mechanical disc and vertebra problems that might be the cause of the pain, but there were also some abnormalities in the bones – things that the report said needed urgent attention.”

However, he went on to assure worried followers that, with one final test to go, he was optimistic of a good result.

“Of course we still don’t know what those things on the MRIs are,” he said. “But I’m hoping they are things that have been there for a long time and are not causing trouble. So – I guess I’m still in the ‘scare’ scenario, but with good hopes. My specialist guys have also been really positive, reassuring me that if they did find anything in the C word category, it was almost certainly treatable with success.”

May hit the headlines several times over the past year, thanks to his strident anti-badger cull protesting, which saw him deliver a 234,000-signature petition to Downing Street and release a single, “Save The Badger, Badger, Badger”, into the UK Singles Charts.

“The British people are speaking in their many thousands, and yet the Government is refusing to listen,” he wrote earlier this year. “We thank them for buying this track and giving the badgers a voice. Let’s get this to number one so Cameron cannot avoid it.”

May is married to former EastEnders actress Anita Dobson, who was famed for her role as Angie Watts.
