Rock star Brian May declared “no vote is wasted, no seat is safe”, as he encouraged young people in Stroud to head to the polling station in May.

The Queen guitarist lauded the town’s Labour candidate David Drew as a “decent man” when he when he spoke at SGS College yesterday. He urged the teenagers to support his Common Decency campaign which calls for radical political reform.

“Don’t vote for a party, vote for a person you believe is decent,” he said. “Common Decency is colour-blind. It is view of candidates is not determined by which political party he or she belongs to, but by the qualities of the person. I believe David Drew is a decent man. He’s very much a campaigner for animals. We will be giving him the seal of approval of Common Decency.”

The animal rights campaigner told students that his work to oppose the badger cull in Gloucestershire had shown him how the political system does not listen to people’s concerns. ]

May took questions from the youngsters on a number of issues, including the environment, and afterwards he posed for photos and signed CDs and guitars.

Vice principal, Sara-Jane Watkins, said: “We are pleased that our learners had the opportunity to discuss animal welfare issues and politics. In addition, we have many budding musicians at our Stroud campus and meeting Brian, for many, was a great privilege.”

May went on to meet Angela Smith, shadow minister for water, fisheries and animal welfare at Lansdown Hall to talk to activists and animal welfare groups about Labour’s pledge to end the badger cull.
